Gu Xin stood up and, together with Bai Shiying, helped the young master's wife to her feet: "Madam, please accept our condolences!"
Zhang turned around, hugged her daughter, and burst into tears.
After returning from Gu Xin's place in the afternoon, Zhang felt restless and couldn't concentrate on copying scriptures. She also couldn't fall asleep and didn't eat much for dinner. Her heart skipped a beat when Officer Gao brought people to find her.
Then came the news that she couldn't accept.
Actually, she didn't believe it. She cried and shouted, hoping that she was dreaming.
But the sight of her son's body lying on that wooden plank forced her to believe it.
She wanted to find Gu Xin and ask her to help find the murderer. She also hoped that Gu Xin would say, "You're mistaken, that's not your son."
Until Gu Xin said, "Please accept my condolences."
She knew it was true; her son was gone, her own son was gone. How could her son be gone?
Bai Shiying also hugged Zhang Shi and gently patted her back, his own tears flowing uncontrollably.
She was the first daughter in her family, with three older brothers and cousins. However, her own brother was the one who treated her the best.
The siblings had a fight in March. She was angry with her brother over a man she had only known for a short time and ignored him. She thought that, like many times before when she was angry, her brother would coax her or she would eventually reach out to him to make up.
But the truth is, it's different, completely different. She never had the chance to be comforted by her brother again, and she never had the chance to reconcile with him.
Her brother is gone.
Bai Shiying cried more and more, feeling increasingly ashamed of her past behavior. She even wanted to slap herself a few times.
But her brother's body was lying there, and no matter what she did, he would never come back.
When the other family members arrived, they saw the mother and daughter embracing and crying. At first, they didn't believe it, but now that they saw the body and the weeping mother and daughter, they finally believed it.
Bai Shijie is dead.
The last to arrive was the princess. She didn't cry like Zhang and Bai Shiying, but her expression was also not good.
The old man just died, and now the eldest grandson is gone too. No old lady could accept that.
She even cast a suspicious glance at her second son. Not only her, but also Master Bai and his wife, as well as the sensible second and third young masters, the fifth young lady and the sixth young master, all had some doubts about Master Bai.
Bai Baozhu was the most obvious example. If it weren't for the Zhang mother and daughter crying, the princess's bad expression, and Gu Xin standing by, Bai Baozhu would have rushed forward to question the Second Master Bai.
Master Bai was annoyed by these gazes and wanted to say something, but he stopped himself after glancing at Master Bai.
Gu Xin felt a little regretful. She had kept quiet, hoping these people would cause trouble, but nothing came of it, and she couldn't get any more information. All she could do was ask everyone to sit down.
With the Bai family all present, the hall in Bai Shijie's house felt somewhat cramped.
Gu Xin said, "I arranged for at least ten people to guard each courtyard, two of them within sight of each other. Even so, someone still managed to enter the eldest young master's study and kill him. That's truly impressive. Everyone, you must have all seen the eldest young master's body. The eldest young master has been healthy and without illness for the past few years. Surely you don't believe that the eldest young master died of illness?"
Second Master Bai spoke first: "Who knows if your people have been slacking off, letting thieves in, or if the murderer was someone from Shijie's courtyard?"
