The master and servant chatted all the way, and time passed quickly.
It was only late morning when they arrived at the Donglin Prince's Mansion. The princess, along with her entire family, was personally welcoming Gu Xin at the main gate.
"Your Highness, you're too kind. It's hot outside, you don't need to wait here." Gu Xin hadn't expected the princess to be so sincere.
"That's only natural. Has Your Highness had breakfast?" the princess asked with a smile.
"I've eaten." Gu Xin nodded, then said, "Then let's not delay any longer, let's all go inside!"
The sun was already out, and the sunlight was still quite dazzling. Gu Xin didn't like sunbathing at all.
The group walked into the main hall of the Prince's Mansion.
Upon entering the hall, the princess invited Gu Xin to sit with her in the seat of honor, but Gu Xin naturally declined.
I could investigate cases before, but now I'm just an observer, here to witness other people's family affairs.
In the end, the princess couldn't persuade her otherwise, so she had no choice but to give up.
After Gu Xin sat down, the maid brought her some snacks and tea.
Looking at Dongxue standing beside her, Gu Xin was worried that it would take a long time and felt sorry for Dongxue getting tired, so she told Dongxue to go outside and chat with the maids.
The two, mistress and servant, had stayed at the Prince's mansion for a few days. Since Dongxue was Gu Xin's person, there were still many maids in the mansion who knew her and were willing to talk to her.
Princess Donglin named a maid and asked her to take Dongxue to have some tea and snacks.
Dongxue then went out with her.
"We have specially invited Princess Xinxin to witness this today, so please feel free to raise any requests you may have later. This matter of dividing the family property is now settled, and no one is allowed to make any further demands." Princess Donglin began, paused, and then added, "The position of heir apparent will be given to the second son, Bai Jiawang, in accordance with the Prince's wishes."
"Mother, my second brother is dead," Bai Laosi said, frowning.
"It was the third son, Bai Jiachang, who died!" Princess Donglin glanced at the fourth son, Bai, and said firmly.
"Ha!" Third Madam Jiang sneered.
“Princess, I’ve thought about it for days and made a decision. We’ll announce to the public that the third prince is dead. You know the truth, so you can tell the Emperor, but please don’t tell anyone else.” Princess Donglin ignored Jiang Shi and turned to Gu Xin to say this.
"Your Highness, rest assured, this is your family matter. However, I don't know whether His Majesty will approve the request to appoint a crown prince after he learns of the matter," Gu Xin said truthfully.
"Don't worry, Princess, I will write a memorial and submit it." The Princess of Donglin nodded, then looked at her descendants, "Does anyone have any objections to the position of heir apparent?"
The second wife, Madam He, and her son remained silent, as did the third wife, Madam Jiang, and her daughter. The fourth wife, Bai Laosi, chuckled self-deprecatingly, "Anyway, whether it's my second or third brother, I have no chance. So, Mother, I have no objections."
Princess Donglin then looked at the two women, the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, from the main house.
Madam Zhang looked worried: "Mother, Father had planned to request the title of Heir Apparent for our second son because he believed that Shijie could take the imperial examination and pursue an official career. But now Shijie is gone. The position of Heir Apparent should have belonged to our eldest son's family. Shijie is gone, but he had a son. Whether Yuge can take the imperial examination is unknown to any of us."
Princess Donglin frowned.
Zheng Wei chimed in, "Grandmother, since you want us to speak our minds, then your granddaughter-in-law will also say something disrespectful. In the past, when noble families inherited their titles, it was either the eldest son or the legitimate heir. Father-in-law was the heir apparent, and now that he's gone, it should have been my husband who became the heir apparent."
