Chapter 29 The Wang Family Mother-in-Law and Daughter-in-Law

Gu Xin would also greet one or two people. She knew everyone in the village, but she didn't have much contact with them.

The mother and her two daughters also encountered their companions on their way to town: Granny Wang and her daughter-in-law from the village. Both of them were carrying large backpacks filled with all sorts of things.

Wang's daughter-in-law gossiped, "Xiao Lian, I saw the gambling den people come again yesterday. Is Gu Lao Er alright?"

Even a large backpack couldn't contain her gossipy heart.

Gu Shouxin had been gambling for many years. He was kicked out of his home because of gambling, and people from the gambling den often came to collect debts. Everyone in the village knew him.

Cai Xiaolian laughed and said, "It's nothing! What could possibly be wrong?"

Wang's daughter-in-law couldn't stop gossiping: "Did Uncle Ye secretly return the money to Gu Lao Er again?"

The Uncle Ye she mentioned was Gu Shouxin's father. He had fallen on hard times and was rescued by Grandma Gu, and then married into the Gu family, a hunter family in Sanchakou Village.

Therefore, Gu Shouxin and his siblings all took their mother's surname, which was not uncommon in ancient times.

Cai Xiaolian glanced at Wang's daughter-in-law, recognizing her as a gossipy woman, but wasn't angry. She smiled and said, "Sister-in-law Wang, I heard that those Zhang boys from Lotus Village came over a few days ago and gave Tiezhu a beating again, right? How is Tiezhu? Is he feeling better? Can he get out of bed now?"

In the original owner's memory, there was a story about the Wang family's grandson, who was the only son and was spoiled growing up. With his good looks and sweet words, he married the village beauty of Lotus Village.

Not long after they got married, the village girl became pregnant. Wang Tiezhu couldn't resist and his true nature was revealed. He went out and had affairs. When the village girl found out, she went back to her parents' home in a fit of anger.

Then, the village belle's seven older brothers and eight nephews came to the Wang family's house and completely overturned it, beating Wang Tiezhu so badly that he still can't get out of bed.

It happened just last month, and it was quite a big commotion. Everyone in the village knew about it, and many people even witnessed the spectacle.

Upon hearing this, Granny Wang glared at her daughter-in-law and looked at Cai Xiaolian, saying, "Tiezhu's brother-in-law came to see Tiezhu's wife. Where did you hear such nonsense, you faithful daughter-in-law? Tiezhu's wife's family cares about her; she's a lucky woman, unlike those daughters-in-law who have a family but no family at all!"

Granny Wang is bringing up how Cai Xiaolian's family treated her badly.

Cai Xiaolian raised an eyebrow: "Yes! Tiezhu's wife has many brothers and nephews, I envy them so much. Unlike me, I only have one brother, and my husband is a gambler and a drunkard, and my brother doesn't even speak up for him. But luckily, he's just a gambler and a drunkard, he doesn't go out and mess around, and he doesn't beat women, otherwise, with my brother's character, where would I find anyone to help me?"

"Take gambling for example! My in-laws are so kind; they haven't made me pay a single penny. And this cheap liquor—he earns his own money to buy it, without asking for any of mine. My family isn't good enough; I don't have the means to go back and complain to them and then use their money to support my in-laws. Sigh, my in-laws are too powerful; they have plenty of money, and I, as their daughter-in-law, can't even find a way to show them filial piety!"

Cai Xiaolian stabbed Wang Apo in the heart with a knife. Because Tiezhu's wife had many brothers from her family, and they were well-off with a large dowry, many people said that the Wang family was relying on their granddaughter-in-law!

Gu Nian looked at her mother with envy. It's so good to have the original owner's memories!

Gu Xin looked at her mother with admiration. Aunt Wang loved to meddle in other people's business and often gossiped in the village. She and her aunt had even cursed the three of them, mother and daughters. Usually, when she heard this, she would only get angry and didn't know how to refute it.
