After finishing his morning exercise, Uncle Gu came over.
"Big brother, have you eaten?" Gu Shouxin was a little surprised. His older brother would never leave the house without eating breakfast first thing in the morning, and he rarely looked so depressed and irritable.
"Oh, it's so good to have you here, Second Brother! I was worried that it would be awkward if my sister-in-law were alone!" Uncle Gu's eyes lit up when he saw Gu Shouxin, and he jogged over.
"Didn't you know that Second Uncle was back? He came over here too, didn't he?" Gu Hui rolled her eyes at her father as she was about to go home.
"Huihui! You really don't care about your father at all!" Uncle Gu said aggrievedly. "I just wanted to hide in Niannian's lab for a while!"
"Dad! I'm not trying to be mean, but what are you afraid of? Shenzhen isn't afraid of anything! You didn't do anything, so if Mom wants to make a fuss, let her make a fuss! Anyway, nobody cares about her!" Gu Hui said disdainfully.
"That's what I was thinking! But your mother started crying and making a fuss early this morning, and your grandmother told us to get out together! So I got out, didn't I?" Gu Shouxin was really aggrieved. This time he didn't do anything, but his mother still wouldn't help him and even told him to get out.
He even suspected that his mother wanted to get rid of all the younger ones after arranging a marriage for her fourth son, so they wouldn't get in her way!
"Uncle, what's wrong? What happened to your sister-in-law?" Cai Xiaolian asked as she came out after changing her clothes, having overheard the father and daughter's conversation.
“My wife says I’m having an affair with Widow Liu from the next village! Last night she was threatening to hang herself, and she even wanted to take Renren and Enzi with her! Isn’t she crazy? Even if I am having an affair with Widow Liu, wouldn’t her death be doing me and Widow Liu a favor?” Uncle Gu said, puzzled.
Gu Shouxin: "...So you really had an affair with Widow Liu?"
Cai Xiaolian looked at Uncle Gu in disbelief. She had never heard of her brother-in-law having a habit of philandering!
"Of course not! I'm not that kind of person. If she hadn't told me, I wouldn't even know which one is Widow Liu. There are several widows in the next village, and I can't tell them apart. Besides, why would I have an affair with a widow?" Uncle Gu said anxiously, trying to explain.
"Dad, stop talking, let me tell you!" Gu Hui pulled her uncle back and explained, "This whole thing was my mother's doing. A few days ago, she went to laugh at some widows in the next village, saying that those widows were obviously unlucky, not only did their husbands die, but their children weren't very good either."
She bragged to others about how good her father was to her, how filial her son was, and how even though Renren was premature, her cries were louder than others. She said she would have two sons to rely on, brothers by blood, unlike those widows who not only had no sons, but even if they did, each son had a different father, and the brothers would fight amongst themselves.
She even said that she was lucky because her parents-in-law treated her well, her sister-in-law treated her like an elder sister-in-law, and she could be the head of the household in Gujia!
People know she's showing off, but what she said about her husband dying and having no son is like rubbing salt into a widow's wounds.
So, a few people conspired to lie to my mother, saying that my father had slept with Widow Liu, and that they were all witnesses. They even said that my father went there at a certain time, but coincidentally, my father was working alone in the fields at that time, and there was no one to vouch for him!
My mother firmly believes this and made a scene all night last night. Grandma hit my dad with a carrying pole, and she only stopped when she was afraid of being hit by Grandma too. But this morning when Sisi and I came over, she started again.
