Chapter 3 Retreat! Retreat! Retreat!

A father and son looked at each other. The father said, "As expected, you can hear me too."

Son: What's going on? How could you hear me?

Dad proudly retorted: "What? You can hear me but I can't? I'm Chuanwen's own grandfather, why can't I hear you!"

The child is thinking: Hmm...it doesn't seem wrong.

"Sir, the dishes are ready."

When the servant came in to report, Marquis Changxing was immediately delighted. Chuanwen loved to eat so much, so let her eat more. If she was happy, she might be able to talk more. He immediately ordered the servant to serve the dishes.

The meal was enjoyed slowly and leisurely. By the time they finally finished, it was almost dark, but Chuanwen had spent the entire afternoon appreciating the delicious food and hadn't uttered a single word about the Marquis of Changxing dying.

Marquis Changxing glanced at the cooling sky and became somewhat anxious. As soon as the cool breeze blew in, he felt a chill on his neck, as if a knife was pressed against his neck, ready to pierce him at any moment and send him to his death.

Lady Changxing was also anxious, and several more wrinkles appeared on her face. So she had a sudden idea and decided to ask indirectly. She put on a loving smile and asked Chuanwen, "Is there anything Wenwen wants to eat? I will ask your grandfather to buy it for you tomorrow."

Chuanrui silently gave his adoptive mother a thumbs up, for she had mastered the technique of getting information out of his daughter so quickly.

"Oh, then I'd better not, I'm afraid of ghosts."

Chuanwen wore a bitter expression and said, "Grandmother, I've had enough to eat today, and I don't plan to eat anything for the next few days."

Chuanrui almost couldn't hold back his laughter, but he managed to stop himself after receiving a glare from his cheap mother.

Poor Dad, he got glared at by his own mother the very first day he was recognized.

Xu Yan sighed: It's all your fault!

"Grandfather, I wish you good health and a long life!"

Chuanwu drank tea instead of wine, downing it in one gulp with great gusto.

The accompanying message reads: ...

My brother is... sucking up to someone? But why is he only flattering the Marquis of Changxing? Isn't he afraid the Marquis's wife will make things difficult for him?

His clear eyes looked at Lady Changxing, bracing himself for a dark face, but...

[Why does my adoptive grandmother seem quite happy and...relieved? Could it be that she's like that other person...?]

Chuanwen tried hard to recall the plot, his little face scrunched up. Everyone at the table pricked up their ears to listen. "Like whom? What is it?"

Is it... a masochistic personality?

"Cough cough cough..." Lady Changxing, choked by the tea, coughed several times and almost fainted.

Chuanrui, Xu Yan, and Chuanwu looked shocked, their complicated gazes falling on Lady Changxing. They immediately shook their heads repeatedly, certain it was all nonsense.

Sure enough, Chuanwen's questioning thoughts followed: "[It wasn't mentioned in the plot. The Lady of Changxing's maternal family is a scholarly family, and she herself is a typical young lady from a prominent family and the matriarch of the household. She doesn't have any masochistic tendencies.]"

Then came the sound of quiet relief at the dinner table. Lady Changxing's sharp gaze swept over Marquis Changxing, who quickly held his breath, shrank his neck, and sensed the murderous aura.

"Master, the eldest son has arrived."

The old servant came in to report, and Marquis Changxing was somewhat embarrassed. After all, if Chuanrui hadn't been stolen, the official position bestowed upon Chuanhai and the status of Marquis Changxing's eldest son should have belonged to Chuanrui.

Although Chuanrui has been found, he has been a farmer for over thirty years and has no connections or abilities in officialdom. Even if he were given everything, he wouldn't be able to do it. Therefore, they no longer intend to groom Chuanrui as their heir. If he is ambitious, they will naturally support him fully and help him obtain an official position. If he is not ambitious, they will simply keep him in the mansion and provide him with good food and drink, but he cannot be the eldest son of the legitimate wife.

Marquis Changxing still summoned Chuanhai in. Since they both lived in the same mansion, Chuanrui and Chuanhai, whose identities were awkward, would have to meet sooner or later. It was better to meet sooner, to lay things out and explain things beforehand, so that Chuanhai wouldn't overthink things.

When Chuanhai met Chuanrui, he tactfully avoided the topic of giving up his official position. He was just very emotional and sighed about how the brothers could still reunite after so many years. He also asked Chuanrui to spend more time with his parents to ease his longing for them.

Ever since Chuan Hai came in, Marquis Changxing and his wife have been listening intently to Chuan Wen's thoughts, but Chuan Wen's attention was entirely focused on the food. She only glanced at her second uncle, who had taken her father's place, and then paid no further attention to him.

Both of them were relieved, it seemed that the death of Marquis Changxing had nothing to do with Chuanhai.

It wasn't until Marquis Changxing pushed a plate of red bean pastries, newly brought in by a maid, to Chuanwen, saying, "Try this, it's the signature dish of Qiancengge, it's delicious."

Marquis Changxing has recently taken a liking to the red bean pastry from Qiancengge. It's crispy and crunchy with the sweet aroma of red beans. Everyone thought Chuanwen would happily take it and eat it, but unexpectedly, Chuanwen was so frightened that she choked on a braised pig's trotter. Everyone quickly patted her back and brought her water.

"Child, slow down!"

Xu Yan thought Chuanwen was eating too fast and was scolding him when she heard Chuanwen's inner thoughts.

[Oh my god! Stay away from toxic products for good health! May everything go smoothly! May you have no taboos! Namo Amitabha Buddha, retreat! Retreat! Retreat!]

What the heck?

Everyone was stunned, including Chuan Hai. What was that sound?!

Although it was a bit chaotic, everyone still managed to pinpoint the key word from the jumbled messages: toxic!

Marquis Changxing's face turned ashen, and he paused as he was about to put a piece of red bean pastry into his mouth. So he died from poisoning after eating this plate of red bean pastries!

At this moment, Chuanwen noticed that Marquis Changxing was about to put a piece of red bean pastry into his mouth, and his nerves tightened again as he recovered from his shock.

[What should I do? Marquis Changxing gave me so much delicious food. It wouldn't be right not to warn him, but if I do, while he might avoid poisoning, things will get even worse for him! What should I do? What should I do? Don't eat it! Don't eat it!!!]
