Chapter 14 Benny's Evil
"Where is your captain?" Gervis frowned and continued to ask in a calm tone.
"Sir, we don't know. The captain went out early in the morning!" It was still the same guard who answered. Perhaps because of Gervis's calm tone, the guard no longer trembled and paused when he spoke the second time. He answered Gervis' questions in one breath and continued to keep his head down in silence.
As the captain, Gervis was a little bit unbelievable that his team members were not going anywhere. Were they still the guards of the earl's direct territory? Gervis had passed many of Alice's direct territories along the way, and had been checked by the earl's direct guards twice. Although those guards could not be said to be elite soldiers, they were much better than the patrols of the vassals that Gervis had seen.
The patrols of the vassal nobles were like militias, while the earl's direct guards were more like regular troops. At least they were uniform in appearance and did not look like a mob.
…
"What are you doing? Who asked you to come out? Why don't you go back and guard the castle!" Suddenly, a loud shout was heard in the distance, but the shouting stopped abruptly before it was finished.
…
Benny is the captain of a team of ten guards stationed in Viscount Major's territory. He got up very early today.
If it were in the past, he would definitely sleep until noon before slowly getting up. The Viscount Major's territory had become extremely dilapidated since the disaster thirty years ago, and its location on the edge of the Dark Forest made it even more daunting for people to visit.
Now in this huge territory there are only more than 2,000 serfs living in a run-down town and three poor villages. Basically no free people are willing to stay here. Few people and remoteness mean less fun. If Benny gets up too early, he is worried that he will be very bored.
Benny has been ordered to garrison here for a year and a half, and he will need to stay for another three and a half years before someone will be sent to replace him. He felt extremely uncomfortable during his first year here. Although he was the captain and the most influential person in the territory, he had no place to use his talents. All the people living here were serfs, and there were basically no disputes among neighbors.
Of course, even if there were some minor disputes, they would not dare to report them to me. As for bandits, these serfs only had worn-out, sour-smelling linen clothes on their bodies, and their pockets were a hundred times cleaner than their faces. No brain-damaged bandits would rob them, so their lives could be said to be as plain and uneventful as water.
Of course, this is life in the first year.
The change occurred in the second year, which is this year. The orcs had just retreated in the winter and the serfs returned to where they lived.
That day, Benny had just returned from patrol outside the town. On the way back, when passing by a small river, Benny saw a young woman who was washing clothes by the river. For Benny, who had not vented his anger for a year, the woman with not-so-fair skin aroused the fire in his heart, and he became bolder and bolder. So he sent away the other guards, took only two of his own confidants, and walked towards the young woman...
When the woman was hurt, she struggled desperately and cried for help. Her cries attracted some serfs to come and check. However, when they saw that the attacker was the guard on duty, they not only did not dare to step forward, but ran away instead.
Afterwards, Benny felt scared and confused, but after a while, the incident did not cause any trouble, and no one bothered him.
From that moment on, it was like opening Pandora's box, and he knew how to spend these dull days.
But Benny is not stupid. If he forces himself like he did last time every time, something will definitely go wrong if it happens too often.
So he thought of a way. The noble lords had the right to the first night in the territory. Now he was the most powerful in the territory. If there was no noble lord to enforce it, then he would do it. Anyway, the life and death of those serfs were decided by themselves here, and no one dared to say anything.
So, Benny began to wander around the territory with his two lackeys.
During this period, he had done a lot of things like robbing chickens and ducks, but he hadn't found a family to get married. Until yesterday, he finally heard that a serf was getting married in a village in the countryside, so Benny went there in person, because he didn't dare to bring the person to the castle. After all, he was not a real lord. Only the lord could exercise the right of first night in the castle. In addition, there were seven guards in the castle recruited locally by the former captain. There were many people and eyes. Only the two lackeys behind him were like him, transferred from other places, and originally his subordinates, so he was very confident in using them.
Benny was in a very bad mood at the moment, because when he rushed to the house of the serf who was about to get married and explained that he wanted to exercise his right of virginity, the serf's bride immediately ran to the mountain and hid.
Although Benny was angry after waiting for the whole morning, there was nothing he could do. The person just ran away, not resisted, and he couldn't kill her directly. So he caught two chickens in the yard, prepared to come back to eat and drink their fill, and then find an opportunity to quietly block the fleeing woman.
The monk can run away but the temple cannot. They are serfs. If they dare to run out of the territory, they will be dead. The families of both parties will be treated as guilty. So Benny is not in a hurry, but he has not vented his anger and is very unhappy.
When he came to the town through the small path with two lackeys and the stolen chicken in their hands, as soon as he turned out of the alley, he saw several guards gathered together in the middle of the road at the intersection of the town.
Benny, who was quite annoyed, didn't think twice and started to curse. But just when he was cursing, the lackey next to him pulled the corner of his clothes. At first, he was a little angry, so his men interrupted him.
But when he looked more closely, he saw a young man in silk and several middle-aged men, and he shuddered all over. Because he saw that those men were clearly riding horses. You know, in this world, horses sometimes represent nobility and represent people who cannot be provoked.
Even for freemen, except for large caravans, it was rare to see five or six horses together. The most important thing was that the seven guards all lowered their heads, as if they had seen an important person. Although they were cowardly and were ordered around like dogs by himself and his two men, they were wearing cloth shirts with the Jones family logo, so serfs and freemen would hide from them if they saw them, and were as afraid of them as snakes and scorpions.
Benny didn't dare to delay any longer, and immediately ran towards the crowd. Whether he wanted to or not, he had to go. If an important person really came, he would be in trouble if he avoided it now. It would be better to investigate the situation first and act accordingly.
"Young sir, I am Benny, the captain of the guard here. I wonder what brings you here!" Benny still had some vision and saluted directly to Gervis, because Gervis was surrounded by people and was the only one wearing a silk shirt. The others were all wearing linen shirts, and the three men who looked like guards only wore leather armor over their linen shirts.
"Haha!" Gervis sneered. He had seen the captain's foul language and the hooligans' scolding. As a soul from Earth who had traveled through time, he had watched a lot of TV dramas. The two guards behind the captain each held a chicken in their hands, and their clothes were disheveled, just like some of the bad guys in the drama, who entered the village and robbed civilians.
However, Gervis was not ready to get angry at the moment. There was still a long time to go, so he would wait until he figured out everything before dealing with the matter properly.
"My Lord Baron Gervis has been granted the title of Earl. From today on, the area from the Dead Leaf River to the Dark Forest is Lord Gervis's territory. Your 10-man garrison guard team will be loyal to Lord Gervis. As the captain, why don't you salute quickly!" Thomas was standing behind Gervis. Seeing Gervis sneer, he immediately shouted at Benny in a stern tone.
Ever since Gervis received the scroll of certification issued by the Earl, he has become the king of this territory, and Alice also stated that this team of ten people would be given to Gervis instead of being transferred away, so Gervis would have the power of life and death over them.
…
If things went according to normal, Gervis would be polite and answer the captain's questions. But Gervis clearly felt that there was something wrong with the guards in front of him. The seven were better, but they just behaved worse, and it was hard to tell whether they were good or bad. But Gervis had an 80% feeling that the captain named Benny was not a good person, so he didn't plan to pay attention to him.
"My Lord... Baron, I deserve to... die, please don't be offended!" After hearing what Thomas said, Benny was so scared that his legs almost went weak and his whole body trembled.
At this moment, Eagle and his companions rode out of the castle on horseback. Eagle took the lead and ran to Gervis. He saluted him on his horse and said, "Lord Gervis, I am now leaving to return to Winterfell to report. I wish your territory will prosper under your leadership!"
"Thank you for your good wishes, Lord Eagle! I wish you a safe journey!" Gervis smiled and nodded to Eagle!
"Goodbye, Lord Gervis!" After saying that, Eagle said no more. He squeezed his legs together and commanded the horse to slowly pass by the side of Gervis and his group. When he saw Benny shivering, he smiled playfully at Benny who was peeking at him, as if he was gloating.
When Benny saw Eagle and the guards following Eagle, his face turned even paler! He had heard what Gervis and Eagle said. If there was a one in ten thousand chance that Thomas' words were false, then Eagle and the guards behind him, who were dressed the same as Benny himself, showed that the one in ten thousand chance had disappeared.
