Chapter 42: Poor Benny
In Storm Territory, in a small wood near a mountain village by the sea, Benny lay carefully in the grass, his eyes occasionally scanning the serfs passing by on the road.
"Why don't these lowly poor fellows work today? All of them should go to the town."
Benny was in very bad condition. His eyes were red and his eye bags were dark. His lips were pale and cracked. His hair was covered with weeds and leaves. He was completely different from the captain of the guard he used to be.
The night before, after Benny escaped from the castle on horseback, he originally planned to ride all the way to Viscount Lanny's territory so that the pursuers sent by Gervis would not be able to cross the border to hunt him down. Unfortunately, the pursuers were chasing too closely and Benny might be caught up before he could escape from Gervis' territory.
Seeing the pursuers getting closer and closer, Benny abandoned his horse in desperation and hid in the woods by the roadside.
While running away, Benny lost his sword and a pair of shoes. His clothes were torn by tree branches. Only his leather armor was left intact. But this was not the most unbearable thing for Benny.
What Benny couldn't stand the most was that when he felt he was safe, he found a place to stop and rest, but found that his purse containing gold coins was also lost. This made Benny, who had already become a stray dog, almost collapse.
Without gold coins, he would be unable to move forward and would not even have a way to make ends meet.
Even if he ran to Viscount Lanny's territory, he would be caught soon if someone discovered his appearance. The best outcome would be to be sent to Viscount Lanny's territory to work in the coal mines.
Thinking of this possibility, Benny no longer dared to escape towards Viscount Lanny's territory. After thinking for a long time, he decided to run to the sea because he had heard that there were many pirates on the sea.
With his current status, the only way for him to survive is to join the pirates.
After hiding all the way, Benny finally ran to the beach. As long as he crossed the road in front of him, he could run directly to a sampan parked on the beach.
No one in Storm Territory makes a living by fishing, so there are no fishing boats. There is only a sampan, which was made by the children in the village using broken wooden boards to catch lobsters at sea. This is also Benny's only hope of escape now.
After Gervis inspected the territory yesterday, the serfs all knew that the land had a new lord, and the lord also offered a reward of 1 silver coin for the capture of Benny.
The fields were full of serfs who were talking loudly about this matter. Benny could hear it clearly while hiding in the dense forest. Not only were the serfs talking about it, but they were also looking around carefully while walking, to see if they could be lucky enough to find Benny and get a reward.
Seeing this scene, Benny became terrified. All he wanted now was to escape from Gervis' territory as quickly as possible.
Although he was only a few hundred meters away from the sea, he could not cross the road in front of him because there were endless serfs passing by on the road. This made Benny dare not move at all, for fear of being discovered and caught.
He used to be the captain of the guards, and the serfs were as scared of him as a mouse seeing a cat. But now he was a wanted criminal, like a rat crossing the street, and his sword was lost. As long as one or two serfs found him, they would definitely catch him.
Benny waited for more than half an hour without realizing it. Then he felt that his hope had come because the number of serfs passing by began to decrease. Only an old serf was walking slowly with a hoe in his hand. There were no other passers-by behind the old serf.
"Hurry up and go, you lowly serf." Seeing the old serf slowly approaching, Benny kept cursing in his heart.
Just as Benny was cursing, the old serf seemed to have heard his curse and suddenly quickened his pace.
The old serf ran quickly to the edge of the bush where Lanny was hiding.
The old serf's action immediately made Benny's heart beat faster, his head buzzed, and the curses in his mouth stopped abruptly.
"Did he find me? Should I stand up and kill this old bastard first? No, the passers-by ahead haven't gone far yet. They can hear me if they make a little noise."
Benny was having a fierce struggle in his heart. He was not sure whether the serf had discovered him, but he did not dare to stand up and take the initiative, because the passers-by in front were only a few dozen meters away from here, and they would be able to hear him as long as the old man made a little noise.
Just when Benny was in a dilemma, the old serf had already come to Benny. However, the old serf did not observe the situation in the grass. Instead, he looked left and right on the road, then put the hoe behind him and began to untie the belt on his linen shorts.
"Wow~ I feel so comfortable. I drank too much water at noon and almost couldn't hold it!" The old serf muttered to himself while holding the water.
"*****" Benny was about to cry. Since he became a guard, he had never been tortured like this. Although the old man did not notice him, the problem was that all the water poured by the old serf was poured on his head, and then flowed from his head to his face.
Benny clenched his teeth and clenched his fists. The veins on the back of his hands were bulging and his nails were digging into the flesh. Benny felt that he could no longer suppress the anger in his heart.
"Even if I die, I will kill you, you bastard!" Benny shouted in his heart.
"You..." Just when Benny couldn't bear it anymore and raised his head to get up, wanting to fight with the old serf who had sprayed water on his face, the old serf finally finished draining the water, shook his body, then bent down to pick up the hoe on the side of the road, and then walked forward with a relaxed look on his face.
"Hmm?" The old serf, who had just taken two steps, felt as if he heard some sound. He looked around in confusion. After looking for a long time, he found nothing. Then he scratched his head and walked away without looking back.
"When people get old, their ears become weaker..."
Looking at the old serf's departing back, Benny, with his hair dripping with wetness, burst into tears from his scarlet eyes, and kept shouting in his heart: "You bastards, just wait, I will kill you all one day."
Then, after making sure that there was no one on the road, Benny quickly crossed the road and ran towards the sampan on the beach.
…
After telling Ike to rest and recuperate, Gervis returned to the restaurant on the first floor.
After lunch, Gervis, accompanied by his butler Thomas and three guards, rode to the coastal town.
The town square was extremely lively at this moment. It was no exaggeration to say that there were huge crowds of people.
On the road in the distance, groups of three or four were rushing towards this side.
"I'm afraid that most of the territory's population has come here." Looking at the dense crowd in front of him, Gervis couldn't help but sigh.
"Sir, this afternoon is the time for the castle to select male and female servants. Anyone who meets the requirements will definitely come." Thomas and his companions did not ride horses, but followed Gervis on foot. When he heard Gervis sigh, he immediately spoke up.
"Haha, you are smart. You know to spread the news first." After hearing what Thomas said, Gervis couldn't help laughing.
"Sir, there is nothing we can do about it. When I came to the town yesterday, I found that there were only a few people in the town. Most of the young and capable people had gone to the fields to farm." Thomas made a bitter face when he heard Gervis' joke.
"If I hadn't known that you were a magnanimous and kind master, I wouldn't have dared to take the initiative to change the date of selecting servants to today."
