Chapter Fifty-Two: Disappearance

They are different from us.

These words gave Gu Jinghui a headache.

Outside the house, Cai's mother's voice came, tinged with envy, saying, "I heard that Madam is the daughter of the Chancellor of the Imperial Academy. The Chancellor's students are all top scholars, or at the very least, they are Jinshi or Juren. Madam must have studied a whole house of books with the Chancellor. She must be incredibly talented."

Hongye laughed heartily and said, "Why nine dou? Doesn't everyone say one is learned beyond measure and talented beyond measure?"

"It's even more impressive if it has one more peck than eight pecks."

Madam Cai explained with a smile, and then flattered her, saying, "Miss Hongye must have learned a lot from following Madam."

Hongye said, "I learned a few characters from Madam when I was a child."

The two talked outside for a while longer, and then Hongye comforted Cai's mother and saw her off.

Inside the room, Gu Jinghui lay on the couch, deep in thought.

Hearing Qin Yuan call someone in to serve him, he lost all interest in going to see her.

He didn't know how long he had been lying there, maybe he had dozed off, maybe he hadn't, when there was a knock on the door. Gu Jinghui opened his eyes and asked irritably, "Who is it?"

The knocking stopped.

"Would you like to have lunch with me, my husband?"

Even through the door, one could hear Qin Yuan's hesitation and unease.

Gu Jinghui could almost picture his young wife's timid appearance.

The mountain valley, which was just moments before shrouded in fog and where you couldn't see your hand in front of your face, was suddenly illuminated by the sun breaking through the clouds, revealing a clear and bright scene.

Gu Jinghui pressed his lips together, and after a moment he said, "Okay, I'll be there in a bit."

Outside the door.

Hongye winked at Qin Yuan.

Qin Yuan glared at her and said, "Hurry up and tell the maids to serve the meal. Is the small kitchen ready?"

Hongye said, "I'm afraid we'll have to wait another two days."

Qin Yuan said, "Then we won't add any more dishes for the Marquis for now."

The two people walked away.

"Add more dishes, from the small kitchen," Gu Jinghui murmured with a smile.

His young wife still has feelings for him.

No wonder the officers always say behind his back that he has never enjoyed the care of women in his family and doesn't understand.

The way one cares for their own woman is truly different from how servants or others do.

The maids finally finished setting out lunch, and Gu Jinghui arrived.

Qin Yuan had changed into a casual outfit; the light red color made her look as gentle as water. Her long, flowing hair was loosely tied into a bun and secured with a jade hairpin, giving her a relaxed and carefree appearance.

The two teardrop-shaped pendants on his ears swayed with every movement, making him unable to resist looking at them.

Qin Yuan didn't keep Hongye and Cuiming this time, saying that the supervisory mothers were also tired, and they should eat by themselves and not be served.

Gu Jinghui was even happier.

Seeing his reaction, Qin Yuan knew she hadn't guessed wrong.

During the meal, Qin Yuan ladled a bowl of soup for him and said, "Husband, please have this. It's chicken soup, which is nourishing. The oil on top has been skimmed off. It will help your wound heal faster."

Gu Jinghui took it, took a sip, and nodded: "Delicious."

"Husband, have some of this."

Qin Yuan placed another piece of food on his plate.

She had eaten with Gu Jinghui a few times and thus knew his tastes.

Seeing that she had picked out his favorite food, Gu Jinghui was even happier.

He reciprocated by serving Qin Yuan food and rice.

The two had a very warm and loving relationship.

After eating for a while, a maid came to announce, "Sister Hongye, someone from Fengxuan Pavilion has come and says they have important matters to report to the Marquis."

Gu Jinghui's face suddenly darkened.

Gu Shiliu had just predicted it; why was he being invited again?

He couldn't help but glance at Qin Yuan's expression.

Qin Yuan continued to chew the sweet and sour pork slowly, enjoying it immensely.

It seemed like nothing could disturb her meal.

"I won't go," Gu Jinghui said, feeling even more guilty, and quickly explained.

Qin Yuan slowly swallowed the meat in her mouth before saying, "Why don't you ask what's wrong?"

Gu Jinghui said, "No need. I just discussed it with my mother this morning. From now on, my mother will handle all matters related to Fengxuan Pavilion. They should stop looking for me."

Qin Yuan looked over upon hearing this.

Gu Jinghui seemed to have thought of something and quickly explained, "As soon as they entered the manor, Mother took care of them, for fear that someone would neglect them. It's just that they are not used to everything in the capital and keep coming to find me. It wasn't like this when they were in the northern frontier."

This is to make a statement and to distance themselves from the situation.

Qin Yuan pursed her lips and remained silent.

Hongye had already lifted the curtain and entered, her face drooping. She said in a harsh voice, "My lord, someone from Fengxuan Pavilion has arrived. Does Your Highness wish to invite them here?"

It's only been a few days since things calmed down, as if it were all planned out.

Hongye was furious, and consequently, she also disliked Gu Jinghui.

Unexpectedly, Gu Jinghui said slowly, "I won't see you."

"……Um?"

Hongye looked at Lord Gu in shock.

"I said I wouldn't see them. Go tell them that from now on, all matters concerning Fengxuan Pavilion should be reported to the Old Madam. If there's anything they need, use, or lack, just let the Old Madam know. I'll be going to the main camp for my shift in a couple of days and won't have time to deal with these things. Don't delay their important business."

Hongye paused for a moment, hesitated, and didn't move. Instead, she looked at Qin Yuan.

Gu Jinghui coughed, his face stern, and said, "What are you still standing here for? You're usually so talkative, but you've been so clever all along."

Hongye's face flushed red, and she said with a dry laugh, "Then this servant will reply as such."

"How else should we respond?"

Gu Jinghui said with a dark face, "And remember to address me as Madam from now on, don't call me Miss or Miss, it makes me unhappy."

Hongye responded in a barely audible voice, turned around with a smile on her face, and briskly retreated.

Qin Yuan laughed and said, "Why would my husband scare her for no reason? Hongye is timid."

Gu Jinghui said with a sour face, "Hmph, don't think I don't know."

"What do you know?" Qin Yuan asked curiously.

A pair of clear, black and white eyes stared intently at him, and Gu Jinghui's heart fluttered. He couldn't help but move closer and whisper in Qin Yuan's ear, "She's incredibly bold. She's always talking badly about me behind my back. If it weren't for my good temper and my affection for her master, she wouldn't be able to keep running around like this until now."

The hot air hit Qin Yuan's ear canals.

Qin Yuan's ears slowly turned red.

Gu Jinghui felt a surge of joy; he seemed to understand something, yet at the same time, he understood nothing at all.

In short, things are not quite the same now.

Outside the Wutong Garden, Bai Que stared blankly at Hong Ye's red lips opening and closing.

She understood every single word the other person said, so why couldn't she understand them when they were put together?

The Marquis refused to even see her and instead told her to go and give a report to the old lady.

How is that possible?

This morning in the main room, the Marquis was still very concerned about Madam Zhao and her son. She and Madam Zhao waited for a long time, but no one came.

Thinking that perhaps she was held back by the Lady Hou, she came to Wutong Garden to ask for help.

"Did the Marquis really say this himself?"

Hongye retorted angrily, "Would I dare to fabricate the Marquis's words?"

Bai Que snorted and said, "That's hard to say. Everyone knows how much the Marquis cares about Fengxuan Pavilion. If you say the Marquis will never see us again, who would believe it's true?"
