Chapter Sixty-Six: No Peace and Quiet

Qin Yuan smiled and said, "I only learned about Bai Que from the Sixth Madam yesterday. She said that Bai Que had been standing outside the Wutong Garden sunbathing. The Sixth Madam said that Bai Que had served the Old Madam and was quite respectable. I didn't know if this would upset the Old Madam, so I asked Hongye to ask the Marquis. In short, Hongye knows the most about this matter, so it's better to clarify it in public to avoid any misunderstandings."

Qian Da remained silent, his face dark.

Qian Dajia said with a smile, "Madam is very generous. Then we'll trouble Miss Hongye to say it, so that we old servants can understand."

Hongye couldn't hold back any longer. She stepped forward and poured out her grievances. Finally, she said, "This servant didn't know that the person who came to invite the Marquis was Miss Baique, who used to serve the old lady. I thought she was just some maid from Fengxuan Pavilion. I relayed the Marquis's message, but she didn't believe me. She threatened to make me suffer and said she would report me to the Marquis and make me suffer. She even tried to force her way into Wutong Courtyard. Madam has long established a rule that no maids or servants from other courtyards may be allowed into Wutong Courtyard without prior notice. Anyone who violates this rule will be whipped twenty times."

The people in charge of the money felt a little uncomfortable.

Qian Da's face darkened, and he glared at Hong Ye.

Hongye was not afraid at all, and said, "I told those two old women to guard the gate, thinking that Miss Baique would just stand there for a while and then go back. I didn't expect that she would stand there for so long and faint just when the Sixth Madam came to see the Madam. The Sixth Madam asked the Madam about it, and the Madam then found out about it and told me to ask the Marquis if it was alright."

Gu Jinghui picked up the teacup on the table, took a sip of tea, and asked, "Is there anything you don't understand right now?"

Then what is there that you don't understand?

Both Qian Da and Qian Dajia were servants of the household, and they knew everything about the affairs of the Marquis's mansion.

It was clear that the Marquis had grown tired of Zhao Niangzi's persistent pestering for some reason. His own daughter was being unreasonable, making a scene at the courtyard gate. If she hadn't run into the Sixth Madam, things would have been fine. But since she did, she was used as a pretext to embarrass the Madam, which angered the Marquis, and he was kicked out.

It's like gods fighting, and little devils suffer.

Qian Da glanced at the beautiful lady sitting next to the Marquis with mixed feelings.

She thought to herself that Zhao Niangzi's looks were as insignificant as a firefly compared to the Lady Hou in front of her.

His daughter's infatuation could only go to waste.

Qian Dajia sighed, still wanting to speak up for Bai Que, saying, "It's just that this girl is ignorant and has offended the Marquis, but she..."

Qian Da interrupted his wife, saying, "My lord, my lady, it's all because Bai Que is ignorant. This old servant has no face to ask you for mercy anymore. Giving birth to children is a debt. This old servant will apologize to you on her behalf."

After saying that, he pulled Qian Dajia to kneel on the ground, wanting to kowtow to Gu Jinghui and Qin Yuan.

Qin Yuan immediately tugged at Gu Jinghui's sleeve.

Lord Gu stood up, stepped forward and helped Qian Da up, saying, "How can I accept your beating? Please don't do this."

Qin Yuan also stepped forward and said, "Please sit down and talk slowly. The Marquis didn't actually mean to chase Bai Que away. It's just that others spread the word like this. You two love your daughter so much that you made such a fuss."

Upon hearing this, Qian Da and Qian Dajia dared not sit on chairs and quickly found a small stool to sit on at the lower end.

After everyone had taken their seats again, Mr. Qian hurriedly asked, "What is your intention, Madam?"

Lord Gu also looked at Qin Yuan.

Qin Yuan smiled and said, "Lord Marquis, you mean that Bai Que got sick from standing outside in the courtyard? Why don't you go home and take good care of her? Besides, Bai Que is of age, and the old lady has been thinking of letting her go. Why don't you two help Bai Que find a good family, and ask the Lord Marquis and the old lady for their favor and a reward? That would be more respectable."

Even Lord Gu has to give these two face. If Bai Que gets married, Old Madam Gu will definitely reward her handsomely, and she and the Lord will add extra rewards.

When the time comes, once it's announced, everything will be covered up.

Qian Dajia immediately said, "Oh dear, so that's what you mean, Lord Marquis. This old servant has been blinded by greed and confused."

Qian Da looked expectantly at Lord Gu, waiting for him to give his opinion.

Gu Jinghui glanced at Qin Yuan with a half-smile and said, "What you say is quite right, Madam."

Qian Da immediately stood up, bowed to Gu Jinghui and Qin Yuan, and said, "Thank you for your kindness, Lord Marquis and Madam. This old servant will take Bai Que out now so as not to cause you any trouble."

Qian Dajia also said happily, "Madam is so generous. If there is anything we can do to help you in the future, my wife and I will do our utmost."

The two were happy to leave.

Gu Jinghui said, "Come back."

Qian Da hurriedly asked, "Does Your Excellency have any further instructions?"

Gu Jinghui said, "Someone outside is spreading rumors that I want to take Lady Zhao as a concubine. It's utter nonsense, deliberately trying to damage my reputation and tarnish the image of the Marquis's mansion. After Bai Que leaves the mansion, remember to clear my name. I left Lady Zhao and her child in the mansion only to repay a debt of gratitude, and I have no other intentions. Lady Zhao is in the prime of her youth. If she no longer stays, I am willing to prepare a dowry for her."

Good heavens, those words stunned Qin Yuan.

She never expected Gu Jinghui to speak like that. Qian Da was also stunned for a moment before saying, "When I get back, I will have Bai Que redeem herself. Anyone who smears the Marquis or the Marquis's mansion will be going against my family."

Gu Jinghui nodded and said, "Thank you both. Go ahead, I won't see you off."

Qian laughed and said, "I only ask that Madam not blame this old servant for being reckless and trespassing into Wutong Garden, and that she lightly punish the old women guarding the gate."

Even now, Qian Da still remembers to plead for the old women, saying not to punish them at all, but to give them a light punishment. He's really something.

Qin Yuan also smiled and said, "It's alright. I also ask that you not blame my maid. She just entered the manor and hasn't even gotten to know all the faces yet. If she has offended you in any way, please forgive her for my sake."
