64 Skin 6 || The Ward You Can't Leave
Yan Shuang felt a chill running down his back. He licked his dry lips, trying to calm himself down.
Although the light was poor, this was a real person, not an illusion. The figure turned into a motionless statue, lying there stiffly and motionless.
Those sudden rampages and some fatal scenes did not come.
The old man seemed a little tired of watching. He blinked slowly and opened his eyes with difficulty.
Yan Shuang and him stood face to face for about ten minutes. The old man didn't move except for blinking occasionally. In the end, it was he who felt the pain in his feet. Yan Shuang glanced past the old man and looked up. He saw a stack of medical records hanging on the wall, with dense words covering the entire page.
He took down the medical record and turned on the flashlight on the paper.
Name: Zhao Guoan
Gender: Male
Causes: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
The next few pages were all diagnoses and prescriptions. Yan Shuang couldn't understand them. He wished Lin Haichen was there. He wondered if he would still be able to see them during the day if he tore them off now.
With——
He laid the old man's medical records flat on another empty bed, turned on the camera of his mobile phone, turned on the flash, and took pictures of the paper page by page.
After taking the photo, he checked it again carefully until he looked at the last one, then he was satisfied and put the medical record back.
By chance, the flashlight light accidentally swept across the old man's face, and he saw his lips covered by the respirator opening and closing, as if the old man was speaking.
Yan Shuang lowered her eyes, and the respirator mask was soon covered with fog again, making it even harder to see.
After a moment's hesitation he asked, "What are you going to say to me?"
The old man still didn't respond.
Yan Shuang thought he was seeing things. He couldn't take off someone's breathing mask to observe them.
At this time, hurried footsteps were heard in the corridor again. Yan Shuang approached the door, put his ear against it, and listened to the movement outside. When the footsteps faded away, he slowly turned the handle, opened the door a crack, and looked out.
His nostrils were instantly filled with the smell of hospital disinfectant. The smell was so strong that it made people feel like they were soaking in it. Yan Shuang noticed that the light outside the corridor was bright. He thought it must be a call. The outside was empty at the moment, and the footsteps just now seemed like an illusion.
The door of the room opposite was closed. Yan Shuang looked back at the old man lying on the bed in the room, then turned back and pulled the door inward a little to make the gap bigger.
He had to go out and take a look, and now was the best time.
After a moment, he opened the door completely. Yan Shuang's expression froze for a moment. He did not move forward, but slowly took a step back.
Two nurses stood on the left side of the door, just in his blind spot. It seemed like they had been waiting for him there for a long time. When they saw Yan Shuang coming out, they asked coldly, "Where are you going?"
Yan Shuang slammed the door shut without a word. Two nurses knocked on his door a few times. "Patient 012, it's time for the examination. Please open the door."
Yan Shuang stood at the door without saying a word.
The nurse outside was still knocking on the door, and the voice continued: "We will conduct a comprehensive examination of your body."
Yan Shuang locked the door, pulled aside the curtains and looked outside. He was now on the 24th floor. If he jumped, he would surely die. Someone was still knocking on the door. Yan Shuang wasn't sure what it was, but if he got caught by those two, he wouldn't have a good ending.
“No. 012, No. 012—” The noise outside began to become strange, becoming increasingly shrill. Two people pounded on the door, as if they wanted to smash it down. “Open the door! Open the door!!!”
Yan Shuang did not respond. He calmly turned his head and looked into the room. It was impossible to hide anyone in the room. At this moment, he saw a red light flashing beside the old man's bed. Because it was next to the instrument, it was easy to be overlooked.
Yan Shuang walked over quickly and picked it up. It was a call bell.
"It's you?" Yan Shuang asked doubtfully, "Did you ask the nurse to come? Why didn't you let me out?"
The old man's chest heaved violently, his face no longer showing the fatigue from before, and his eyes became greedy as he looked at Yan Shuang.
Listening to the knock on the door, Yan Shuang held the pager tightly in his hand and planned an escape route in his mind. If the old man was a ghost, he would rather take a gamble and open the door and run out now than be locked in the room and face the situation of being attacked from both sides.
"Cough—cough cough—" The old man stared at Yan Shuang and coughed violently. Then he tore off the respirator with great effort. The corners of his mouth curled up to reveal a kind smile. His voice was hoarse and weak as he said, "You, you can't go out. I need you."
The strong smell of disinfectant made his nose hurt. Yan Shuang felt that his smile was creepy. "What you need is none of my business."
The old man did not answer him. It seemed as if the two sentences he just said had exhausted all his strength. The old man put on the mask again and lay on the bed with his eyes closed.
Yan Shuang began to wonder. The old man seemed accustomed to the sounds outside the door and didn't want to kill himself, but why didn't he let me out? Was he afraid I'd run away? What else did he need from me?
The banging sounds outside turned into the scratching of nails. Yan Shuang took a few steps back and prayed silently in his heart that the night would pass quickly.
I don’t know how long it took, but Yan Shuang, who was in a daze, heard a violent knock on the door.
He was distracted for a moment and almost thought it was the two nurses again. After rubbing his eyes, he found that he had fallen asleep while sitting on the ground.
Yan Shuang got up from the ground and looked out the window. A little sunlight was coming in. A familiar voice came from outside. Ye Jingan called him through the loudspeaker: "Yan Shuang, Yan Shuang! Open the door quickly! Are you okay? If you don't open the door, I'll have the boss lock it!"
When Yan Shuang heard this, she said reflexively, "No! If you take down the lock now, I'll be left out in the cold at night."
"Then open the door quickly. Why are you dawdling?" Ye Jing'an said, "I climbed up the 24th floor to wake you up."
Yan Shuang paused for a moment and saw that the old man who was on the bed last night had disappeared. He turned the doorknob, and the door opened to see Jing Ning and Ye Jing'an standing outside.
"You came up in the elevator." Yan Shuang said.
Ye Jingan hurriedly asked, "What happened? You look so bad."
Yan Shuang touched her cold face and said, "Two nurses knocked on my door all night last night."
Ye Jingan pointed at the messy scratches on the door and said, "Don't tell me these were left by those two people, right?"
Yan Shuang glanced at the door and nodded. He told the two about last night's experience. Although he spoke briefly and calmly, Ye Jing'an felt a chill down his spine. "So you were locked in the same room with that old man last night?"
"Yes." Yan Shuang quickly took out his cell phone, and a ball of paper fell out.
He picked up the paper that fell on the ground. He had secretly pulled out a piece of paper when he was sorting out the medical records last night. Yan Shuang spread out the paper. There was nothing on it. The medical records had become a few wrinkled white papers.
