showdown

I went to the door silently to get a broom, and a man stood up and handed it to me attentively.

Wu Meilai glanced at the man casually. He was one of the people who came to watch the "Miao Flower Picking" last time. His skin was shiny dark, like smoked bacon for the New Year.

"Thank you." Wu Mei took it, swept up the broken pieces and the soup, picked up the dustpan and threw it into the trash can across the road.

Zhou Qianling's gaze shifted between her back and the man, his eyes becoming increasingly cold, but he returned to normal before Wu Meilai turned around.

Wu Meilai made a bowl of mutton noodles that she had made thousands of times, but she made many mistakes and no one knew how it tasted. Zhou Qianling didn't comment anyway.

Wu Meilai thought she would say something, but in fact she just finished her meal quietly and left silently. When Wu Meilai looked over there again, there was only half a bowl of cold soup.

For several days in a row, there was a constant stream of people coming and going in the Sandpot Lamb Noodle Shop. When Wu Meilai asked, she found out that the national highway had been built to the next village. The workers heard that there was a good shop here, so they rode their motorcycles here every day.

Zhou Qianling also came to punch in every day. Apart from reporting the dishes, he didn't say anything else. He just ate and left.

But there are more and more vermicelli noodles in the remaining soup, and I don’t know if it’s not to my taste.

Wu Meilai did make many mistakes during her time at the store, so I guess the food doesn't taste very good.

That evening, after dinner time, Wu Meilai had some free time and sat outside the store to enjoy the cool air. Not long after, she saw a straight figure slowly walking towards the direction of Zhoujiazhai.

Wu Meilai quickly got up and hid in the kitchen.

After a while, I heard the sound of curtains colliding outside, but there was no sound for a long time.

She looked outside in confusion. Zhou Qianling was just sitting near the door, staring at her expressionlessly.

Wu Meilai felt a pang of anxiety in her heart, as if the gate hanging over her head would fall today.

If the guest doesn't ask, she will take the initiative to ask: "What would you like to eat?"

Zhou Qianling didn't say anything, but turned his head slightly to look to the side.

Looking over there, I saw a man pretending to stand up.

It’s that bacon guy. I didn’t expect him to come and eat noodles today.

Larou picked up a tan box and handed it to her in a taciturn manner.

"I'm giving it to you. It seems to be a popular thing in the city."

Wu Meilai frowned, feeling a little nauseous. Without asking what it was, she stretched out her hand to refuse, saying, "Thank you, I don't want it."

"Here, they're just a few pieces of chocolate. Girls in the city like them."

"I don't like it."

She pushed the box over again, but Larou was very persistent. Finally, he put the box on the table, smiled innocently and left.

Wu Meilai felt like a piece of shit was forced into her stomach, and she felt nauseous, but the other party's attitude was very nice, so she didn't say anything. She put the box of chocolates on the kitchen ceiling and waited to return it when he came next time.

After putting it away, he turned around and saw Zhou Qianling's cold gaze, seeming a little aggrieved and helpless.

Wu Meilai seemed to be pricked and asked hurriedly, "What do you want to eat?"

Zhou Qianling didn't answer, but just lowered his eyes to look at the patterns on the table.

Wu Mei knew that she couldn't have any more unnecessary involvement with her, so she stopped asking and turned around to clean up the dishes.

As the sun sets in the west, the sky over the distant mountains changes from azure to dark blue, and then to dark blue.

Zhou Qianling was still sitting there, seemingly trying to figure something out.

Wu Mei came to see that there were no guests, so she quietly sat down across from her and asked, "Didn't you receive the message I asked Xiaohua to bring you?"

Zhou Qianling paused, raised his eyelids and looked at her directly, with a forced smile on his lips and undisguised anger in his eyes.

She smiled stiffly and gently, "Got it, I'm your treasure."

Wu Meilai was stunned and was about to speak, but when she saw her expression, she stopped.

That day she didn't say "treasure", she clearly said:

I am normal.

Zhou Qianling knew that she was clearly deceiving herself. After a long while, she suddenly said, "Bring the smoked bacon every day."

It's not a question, nor an inquiry, just a statement.

Wu Meilai never noticed whether the man came every day, but it didn’t matter, so she remained silent.

Another half hour passed.

Zhou Qianling asked calmly, "Will you get married?"

The frequency at the end of the sound is a bit unstable.

They had discussed this issue before, and Wu Meilai's answer at that time was no.

It's still the same now, but if a positive answer would bring about a complete end for the two of them...

Wu Meilai clenched her hands, her chest rising and falling faster and faster. After about two minutes, she nodded slightly.

"I understand." After the sound of the stool legs rubbing against the floor, Zhou Qianling left calmly.

Zhou Qianling never came again after that. When they met occasionally on the road, they would both tacitly look away and walk away.

Wu Meilai couldn't tell whether she was happy or sad about this, but she would occasionally feel sad and lonely for no reason.

This also gave her a quirk.

Although it made her feel ashamed, it was able to relieve the stress she had been experiencing in recent days.

The pressure not only came from the overwhelming surge in passenger flow, but also from Wu Ergou's occasional misbehavior and the gossip in the village.

Wu Mei came to clean up the tables and chairs and returned them to the owner. After transferring the rental fee, the lady smiled and invited her to have dinner.

"No, my mom asked me to go home early today."

When we reached the door, the old lady suddenly asked, "Sister, are you really not dating the road maintenance guy?"

Wu Meilai frowned, then politely replied, "No, we only said a few words."

The old lady smiled and said, "Oh, that boy is not good-looking. Let me tell you, my eldest brother's eldest son, hey, when you were a child, he was still..."

"My mom called me, I'm leaving now. Sorry to bother with your table."

Wu Meilai made an excuse to leave, feeling very upset and having a feeling of anger that just wouldn't go away.

The road builder the old lady was talking about was the guy who looked like smoked bacon. Since he seemed so honest, I thought I'd return the chocolate to him next time, but he invited a few of his friends over the next day and called me sister-in-law as soon as they walked in.

Upon asking, she found out that this bastard thought that accepting his chocolate meant she agreed to be her girlfriend. Wu Meilai was so angry that she turned around, took the pile of chocolate that looked like shit, and threw it directly onto the street.

That bastard actually had the nerve to feel embarrassed and went up to her to hit her.

Wu Meilai didn't learn anything else from Zhou Qianling, but she was even better than him in going crazy. She immediately picked up a casserole and smashed it on his face.

Fortunately, Larou escaped quickly, otherwise Wu Mei would definitely have to pay for the medical expenses.

"You stinky bastard, when you shamelessly forced your shit into my mouth, didn't you think about your worthless face?"

I also learned the term "stinky rotten bastard" from Zhou Qianling, and now I can curse him fluently.

The surrounding villagers heard the noise and gathered around.

The one good thing about the countryside is its unity. A few strangers, realizing they couldn't gain anything from it, left cursing.

However, rumors began to spread later, saying that her talks with the road builder had broken down. Wu Meilai patiently explained at first, but later on, she didn't care, as long as it wasn't related to Zhou Qianling.

After all, that's the truth.

But this incident seemed to turn on the matchmaking switch of many people, and there were always people who had nothing better to do and wanted to introduce her to someone.
