Wei Hui covered Bao'er with the canvas she found, scattered some nails around her, and then carried several large plastic bottles to the pool under the moonlight.
Since the end of the world, the distance between the Earth and the Moon has decreased, resulting in a supermoon whenever the Moon rises in the East.
Then the night won't seem so dark anymore.
She found the plastic bottle while collecting metal. Besides the bottle, she also found some tattered clothes, which she could sew together with thick thread to make new clothes for Bao'er.
Before the apocalypse, she was a single mother and didn't know any of these skills. After the apocalypse, she was forced to learn these survival skills in order to survive.
Wei Hui lay down beside the pool, gulping water down her bottle.
A bloody smell wafted through the warm air. Wei Hui forced herself not to think about it and continued filling the container with water.
The smell of blood grew stronger, and Wei Hui felt a chill run down her spine and began to tremble, but she persevered and insisted on waiting for the bottle to be filled.
There are too many people here during the day. For an ordinary person like her without any special abilities to come here would be tantamount to suicide.
After finally filling the water tank, Wei Hui immediately put the lid on and ran back with the water in her hands.
A gust of hot air blew in, startling Wei Hui so much that she broke out in a cold sweat.
"Hehehehehe... Little beauty, come here~"
A foul-smelling man suddenly jumped out and grabbed Wei Hui from behind, restraining her arms.
Wei Hui gripped the water-carrying rope tightly in her hand. She was terrified, but the thought of Bao'er waiting for her kept her from relaxing her grip.
"My beauty, you smell so good." Wei Hui couldn't stop feeling nauseous and struggled incessantly, shouting, "You bastard, let me go right now!"
"Oh ho, so you're quite the woman with personality. I just complimented you on how fragrant you are, and you actually think you are, huh?" The man's foul breath made Wei Hui's stomach churn and she felt like gagging.
Unfortunately, they were held too tightly and couldn't break free at all.
"Let me go, you damned scoundrel!" Wei Hui struggled even more fiercely. She broke free of the hanging rope, and the water bottle fell to the ground. Because it was a plastic bottle, not a single drop of water leaked out.
"Hehe, I love it when people call me a stinky hooligan." After saying that, the man dragged Wei Hui into the nearby clump of dead trees.
Soon, the sounds of a woman crying and a man joking and cursing came from inside.
With tears streaming down her face, Wei Hui begged the man to let her go.
How dirty!
It's so dirty!
My darling, Mommy's darling!
Jiang Zhi was carrying her bag and walking towards her basement when she heard something she shouldn't have heard.
After the apocalypse, violence, desire, and bloodshed were rampant everywhere, and Jiang Zhi had witnessed such things more than once.
She put her bag in the basement, and when she came out, a heartbreaking scene was still unfolding in the withered grass by the flower bed.
"May you die a horrible death, may you die a horrible death!" Wei Hui pounded the grass, uttering a vicious curse. At this moment, she was filled with utter despair, and only these words could bring her a glimmer of hope.
Why does that voice sound so familiar?
Jiang Zhi racked her brains for a moment before picking out the voice from among the many.
Isn't this Wei Hui, who dragged the iron to the door that night?
Wei Hui's screams were heart-wrenching in the darkness, and suddenly she felt the ugly thing pressing down on her stop moving.
She paused for a moment, then, realizing the crisis was indeed over, she shuddered, buttoned up her clothes, and ran away quickly, not forgetting to pick up the mineral water bottle.
Not a single drop of water was spilled.
Wei Hui ran and cried all the way. She had almost been succeeded in her plan, and she wondered which hero had helped her get rid of the trouble.
After the person had disappeared from sight, Jiang Zhi appeared on the roadside.
The man, dressed in smelly beggar's clothes, didn't own anything of value. The only valuable thing he had on him was a pair of AJ shoes that were covered in dirt.
What bad luck.
Jiang Zhi turned her head and walked home without looking back. After putting down the water, Wei Hui glanced at Bao'er and, seeing that she was sleeping peacefully, immediately breathed a sigh of relief.
After ensuring Bao'er's safety, Wei Hui wiped away her sweat and walked to the cave entrance where Jiang Zhi had been stationed during the day.
She shook the door, but there was no response. Upon closer inspection, she realized that there was no one inside.
The man just fell straight down.
Wei Hui recalled.
Everything happened so suddenly that she didn't see anything clearly.
Boss Jiang isn't here, so where could she have gone?
Wei Hui shrank back, fantasizing that one day she would be as powerful as Jiang Zhi.
The next day, Jiang Zhi was about to open her shop when she saw Wei Hui lying dead at the door.
She was covered in blood, and no one knew what had happened last night. Bao'er sat blankly to the side, her thin face streaked with tears.
Jiang Zhi returned to the basement of her villa last night and entered her spatial dimension, completely unaware of what was happening outside. She had no idea what happened to Wei Hui afterwards.
While turning over Wei Hui's body, Jiang Zhi noticed that she was clutching a piece of paper tightly in her hand, the ink on it was red. Jiang Zhi used some force to pry her hand open and pulled out the crumpled paper.
A letter written in blood.
A few words were written crookedly on it.
"Please, Bao'er, base, save us."
Bao'er finally came to her senses and saw the older sister who had given her mother food, but why? Why didn't the older sister open the door when her mother knocked and called?
Why won't you open the door?
If this older sister had opened the door, would Mom not have died?
Bao'er felt a surge of anger and glared at Jiang Zhi.
The child's gaze was direct; Jiang Zhi couldn't ignore it even if she wanted to.
Could it be that he's taking his anger out on her because of his mother's death? That's inexplicable.
Jiang Zhi didn't intend to pry into what had happened to Wei Hui; she wasn't one to meddle and never intentionally sought trouble for herself. As for the child, Wei Hui was clever enough to anticipate that people from the base would come looking for her. The Shuofang base had a "human seed bank" that housed some children.
Children are the hope of the nation, which is why Wei Hui wrote the words "base" on the note.
It means sending Bao'er to the base.
Jiang Zhi couldn't raise someone else's child. She opened her shop and ran it normally, ignoring the child who harbored resentment towards her.
Just before the sun became too scorching in the morning, Zhou Heng indeed led his large force up the mountain. There were several truckloads of steel and two crates of precious metals.
Jiang Zhi told him about the child, and Zhou Heng said he would take Bao'er away.
As for Wei Hui's body, Zhou Heng disposed of it as well.
While dealing with Wei Hui's body, he naturally noticed the large patch of blood that hadn't been cleaned up at Jiang Zhi's door. It seemed things weren't peaceful at Jiang Zhi's place; in just a few days, all sorts of shady characters had come.
After glancing at Jiang Zhi and then at the bloodstains, and making sure she was alright, Zhou Heng handed Jiang Zhi a new set of documents and took back the old ones that she had already read.
These are all valuable information resources. Zhang Zhaohe has been using these resources to build a subtle relationship with Jiang Zhi, at least making Jiang Zhi lean towards the Shuofang base in her heart.
