Yang Meili sniffed the air and faintly smelled a spicy aroma.
She has been drinking only a little bit of plain porridge for three days in a row. Her mouth is so bland that it's like birds are being eaten, and her nose has become more sensitive than a dog's.
"Don't even mention it. There's someone blocking my way. It's all my fault for being useless," Liu Donghua said, blaming himself.
"It's not your fault. I know you were forced into it, honey. It was those people who made you do it. But we were in the wrong after all. If the order hadn't been disrupted and she had called the police, our family would have been finished."
"The car's out of gas. I'll go out tonight and see if I can get some other food. The gas's still on, but I'm worried it might run out too." Yang Meili comforted her husband, feeling a pang of sadness as she looked at their unfinished home.
Their company was just starting to do well, so they moved to a bigger house, only to be hit by a natural disaster.
She noticed her husband's flaws, but he loved her and treated her very well, so she tolerated them all.
But she never expected that Liu Donghua did it on purpose.
“There are a lot of dead plants in the green belt of our community. Take as much as you can before it gets too hot. I’m going out tonight, so don’t touch anything.” Liu Donghua lay on the ground, his injuries making him look particularly comical.
He was a conflicted person; his intuition told him that the orphan girl next door must have known something beforehand. That's why he considered joining them when those two people knocked on his door the night before last.
Unexpectedly, someone else snatched it away.
He had only recently moved here, and according to those people, this person had never appeared in the neighborhood before.
And yet he loves to meddle in other people's business.
"I'll go now, honey, remember to start fetching water at nine o'clock." Yang Meili said, then left the house carrying a rope left over from the renovation.
The sun outside was scorching hot. After observing her surroundings, Yang Meili took a knife and chopped down a lot of dead, low shrubs and small branches.
Before she knew it, she was drenched in sweat. She carried a bundle of firewood under her arm and looked up to see a blue corrugated iron building.
This is... Yang Meili placed the firewood at the base of the wall, her back and chest completely soaked with sweat.
But she felt there were some things that needed to be done.
She mustered her courage and knocked on Jiang Zhi's iron gate.
Jiang Zhi had just finished the last bite of her meal when she heard the sound and looked towards the exit of the underground parking garage.
Hey, what day is it today? Why are there so many uninvited guests?
Jiang Zhi took a big gulp of iced drink to clear the aroma of the food from her mouth, then put the remaining disposable lunchbox into her spatial storage before leisurely heading to the door.
The real situation of Jiang Zhi's courtyard could not be seen through the crack of the iron gate. Yang Meili looked for a long time but could only see the entrance door of the villa.
"Who are you? What do you want with me?"
"I am Yang Meili, Liu Donghua's wife." Yang Meili was a little flustered, but she still mustered up her courage and said to Jiang Zhi, "Today... my husband was also misled. I want to apologize to him to you. We didn't mean it."
"Oh, are you finished?"
"I...I'm done talking."
"Then you can go." Jiang Zhi thought it was something serious, but it turned out that the wife was apologizing for her husband's mistake.
To be honest, Liu Donghua married a good wife, but his character is simply not commendable.
Yang Meili glanced at the firewood at the base of the wall and quickly said to Jiang Zhi, "I suspect that if the situation can't be contained, the natural gas might be shut off, as well as the water. Many of the green plants in our community have died. You can collect some. I have a bundle here, and I've left it at your door as an apology."
After saying that, Yang Meili untied the rope from the firewood, pulled it out, and left Jiang Zhi's doorstep.
Of course, she didn't expect her neighbors to forgive her.
Jiang Zhi stood still.
Yang Meili's behavior was unexpected; it was the first time she had met such a simple and honest person. This was just the beginning; if resources were any scarcer, and society any more treacherous, Jiang Zhi was certain Yang Meili would suffer a terrible fate.
She was somewhat moved by Yang Meili's innocence; it wasn't that she was foolish, but rather that she still had a conscience.
Why did such a kind person have to encounter the apocalypse?
In the apocalypse, people can eat each other. How long can Yang Meili's innocence last?
Jiang Zhi opened the iron gate, carried the firewood given by Yang Meili into the yard, and then stored it in her spatial storage.
In the distance, Yang Meili was gathering firewood under the scorching sun.
Jiang Zhi thought about it and decided that as someone with many resources, she shouldn't compete with those who had nothing.
He'll put on a show occasionally, but once he gets his revenge, he'll go back to his quiet life.
That evening, Jiang Zhi saw a large group of people rushing towards the entrance of the residential area. Some of them used the most primitive method of lighting—torches. Most of them used either desk lamps or the flashlights that came with their mobile phones.
If you have a bicycle, ride it; if you don't, use your two feet.
Why aren't there any people driving cars?
Because they tragically discovered that the car wouldn't start.
Men, women, young and old all came out.
Jiang Zhi didn't know what their family situation was like, but overnight going from being waited on hand and foot to having to do everything herself in a primitive and rough state must have been tough.
As it turned out, Jiang Zhi's guess was remarkably accurate.
Some of these wealthy families received subtle warnings before the natural disaster struck and prepared supplies, thinking they could rest easy. However, the situation turned out to be more serious than they had imagined.
Those who are completely unprepared will suffer even more.
Couples with disharmonious relationships have already fought countless times over various difficulties, and their pampered children, whose standard of living has been lost, are also full of resentment towards their parents for suddenly falling from grace.
In contrast, Yang Meili and Liu Donghua are a rare couple who have gone through thick and thin together.
