Chapter 31 The Thief Comes to the Door

In the evening, Jiang Zhi added two pieces of charcoal to the stove. The middle of the stove's iron plate could come into contact with the open flame. Jiang Zhi moved the pot and placed a wire mesh grill on top so that she could roast sweet potatoes.

A person and a cat sat by the stove. Jiang Zhi had placed a sofa there and covered it with a small blanket. It couldn't be more comfortable.

The outdoor temperature is close to -20 degrees Celsius, which is just the beginning of the extreme cold, and it will only get lower afterward.

She had already gone to great lengths to keep the indoor temperature above zero.

We need to find a way to raise the indoor temperature.

If the base had power, she could immediately install an air conditioner.

This is a dilapidated house with no electricity or water, and she still has to pretend to go down and fetch a bucket of snow every day.

It's cold above ground, but the situation is better underground, where the temperature stays around 0 degrees Celsius, not cold enough to kill someone.

Besides the Shuofang base, Jiangcheng also has several small private bases built in air-raid shelters, where the control measures are not as strict as those of the official bases.

This is also why Jiang Zhi chose Shuofang as her first choice.

Besides these bases, underground spaces like underground supermarkets and basement garages also serve as refuges, where people band together.

In the evening, Jiang Zhi and Wan Fu snuggled on the sofa watching TV. She wore headphones, while Wan Fu watched a silent film.

"Shh, Jiang Wanfu, it sounds like someone is trying to pick our lock." Jiang Zhi tucked Wanfu into her bosom, her eyes fixed on the door, which was trembling slightly.

The house has a security door, and she changed the lock cylinder after she arrived.

Jiang Zhi had no idea when she was being watched, and she didn't attract attention when she went out. There was only one explanation: it was someone she knew who was behind it.

The "acquaintances" here don't refer to acquaintances in the literal sense, but rather to her neighbors.

Jiang Zhi always kept to herself and never spoke to any of the residents in the community. If she could be targeted like that, the thief must be a habitual thief.

She gently stepped down, put on her furry shoes, and walked to the door like a cat, leaning against the wall.

The kitchen knife tucked at his waist gleamed in the firelight.

Wanfu nestled in Jiang Zhi's arms, its soft body slipping away, and Jiang Zhi couldn't resist giving it another pat.

This cat is so cute and cuddly, woof woof!

Wanfu called softly, "Meow~ gurgle gurgle."

The people outside seemed to hear the cat meowing and immediately stopped what they were doing, but they resumed a moment later.

Jiang Zhi's lips curled up slightly.

She didn't lock it from the inside, and it's so troublesome for these people to unlock it, so I might as well help them out.

Jiang Zhi felt that it was inconvenient to use a kitchen knife to hit someone, as it would easily make blood everywhere. So she took out Wanfu from her bosom, picked out a gun from her spatial storage, and attached a silencer.

With the gun concealed under her sleeve, Jiang Zhi immediately pulled the doorknob, and the door slammed against the wall with a bang.

The three thieves outside, wearing woolen hats and floral cotton-padded jackets of unknown origin, were dumbfounded.

"Oh, trying to break in?"

There was a fire burning in Jiang Zhi's room, and an oil lamp was lit, so the three thieves could see into the living room.

Seeing that there was indeed only Jiang Zhi, a woman, in the room, the three thieves exchanged glances, and their expressions instantly became arrogant.

"Hey beautiful, are you home alone? We're a bit short on cash lately, and with three grown men like us, you must be feeling lonely! How about we three take care of you from now on?"

The leader's greed was palpable.

I really don't know who gave them the courage to tie a knot around a woman surviving in the apocalypse.

Don't they know that they can't afford to mess with women who live independently?

Jiang Zhi didn't want to waste words; she had heard these words more than once, and her ears were tired of them.

"Come at me all at once," Jiang Zhi beckoned to the three men with her finger. The three men thought that Jiang Zhi was being sensible and had given up struggling, and they were quite pleased with themselves.

Jiang Zhi quickly kicked the leading man away, pressed the gun against the head of the man in the green hat next to her with her right hand, and pulled the trigger. The green hat's brains splattered out.

Everything happened in an instant. Before the man in the khaki hat could even react, Jiang Zhi shot him in the heart. The bullet exploded in his chest, and he convulsed on the ground.

The leader was terrified when he saw that Jiang Zhi had a gun.

"Beautiful lady, beautiful lady! Please forgive my rudeness, I'm a scoundrel who didn't recognize your greatness. Beautiful lady, please let me go, please let me go!" The man in the orange hat knelt on the ground and kept kowtowing.

"Was this a spur-of-the-moment decision, or was it premeditated?" Jiang Zhi's tone was cool and detached, like an ice cube piercing the heart of the orange-hatted man.

"We... it was a spur-of-the-moment decision."

"Do you know Ji Xiaoxiao?"

"Ji Xiaoxiao? Who is that?" The man in the orange hat was completely baffled, not understanding why this terrifying figure in front of him would ask such a question.

"Then you can die." Jiang Zhi sneered, then shot the orange hat off.

The man in the orange hat died with his eyes wide open in disbelief.

A lot of blood seeped from the three bodies.

Jiang Zhi sighed.

Damn it, the base forbids killing people indiscriminately, and she still has to deal with the bodies of these three people.

Jiang Zhi took out three large black garbage bags and, before the three bodies stiffened, wrapped them up and put them into the garbage bags.

After the corpse was put into the space, bright red blood and white brain matter remained on the ground.

Damn it, I need to find a way to kill without shedding blood from now on.

Jiang Zhi took the mop, soaked it in rice water, and resignedly started mopping.

Even after mopping twice, the marks were still there, so I had no choice but to spray on hydrogen peroxide. This stuff works wonders and quickly wiped away the marks.

After cleaning up the crime scene, Jiang Zhi closed and locked the door. She was covered in the smell of blood and wished she could take a hot bath right away.

Her building is in a remote area. I had observed it before; only a few people lived on the floors below the fifth floor. The commotion just now wasn't loud and didn't attract anyone's attention.

Who told them to sneak in and break in?

Jiang Zhi took a bath for half an hour, then decided not to stay outside anymore. She let Wanfu play by himself in the space, while she lay on the roof of the villa and looked at the stars.

That's right, she can see a sky full of stars in her holographic space.

She tried, but there was a protective membrane-like thing at the edge of the space, and she couldn't get out.

However, one can see the outside scenery from inside the space. The outside is surrounded by mountains, with no human habitation. Occasionally, animals pass by, but they seem not to see her.

Therefore, Jiang Zhi boldly guessed that this membrane-like thing should be a barrier to protect this space.

She had a small space, but there was a much larger expanse of land outside. Therefore, it's possible that she traveled through time rather than possessing a space.

Combining the fragmented memories she had obtained when she first acquired the space, she boldly guessed that she might have traveled back to the previous Earth cycle.

Regardless, this place of shelter was a gift from someone else, and she was grateful for it.

Daylight broke, and the morning glow filled the sky.

"Wanfu, come here."

As soon as Jiang Zhi called out, Wan Fu, carrying a thrush in his mouth, came running to her.

Wanfu put down the thrush that was pretending to be dead and even used its little paws to push it towards Jiang Zhi's feet.

"Meow~" This is for you.

Jiang Zhi squatted down and poked the little thrush that was pretending to be dead.

"Oh dear, this is your good friend, why did you catch it?" Jiang Zhi lifted up the little thrush. Upon seeing a familiar person, the thrush stood up and chirped a few times, as if making a complaint.
