Chapter 98: Orderly City D
Circles of black water marks were printed on top.
There are many parking spaces painted against the wall, and basically all the cars parked here are RVs.
In addition to the RVs, there are many tents on the ground.
There were rows of awnings in the middle of the road, and under the awnings were two rows of seats, where the survivors each had their own circle.
They all sat together.
Xiang Yu spotted a parking space and parked in it. The RV on her right was supported by a jack, and a man was changing the tire of the RV.
A woman squatted beside him and handed him tools.
It was too hot to carry a backpack, so Xiang Yu only took a water bottle with him and hung the rope around his neck. Xiang Yu put on a thermal insulation suit, got out of the car and closed the door.
Under the awning, four or five men sat side by side. After lighting a cigarette, they took a few puffs each, cherishing it very much.
A faint smell of cigarette smoke permeated the air.
Xiang Yu left the parking lot and wandered around the streets, and found that this place was different from many disaster-stricken towns.
City D was only hit by a natural disaster, but no man-made disaster. The upper class here took good care of the survivors of the disaster.
Although many high-rise buildings collapsed, the stone houses on both sides were rebuilt. Because the sun was still very strong at that time, some survivors hid in the stone houses.
The rows of stone houses were filled with the survivors of City D, and there was a construction team building new stone houses ahead.
These survivors did not sleep on the streets nor were they displaced; the upper class of City D gave them a new home.
After the sun set, the survivors who had been hiding in the stone houses to cool off came out one after another. They stood on the street, leaned against the stone wall, and slowly sat down.
After being exposed to such high temperatures for a long time, their bodies have gradually adapted to such temperatures.
The men were shirtless, wearing only a pair of shorts to cover their private parts, and the women did the same.
Their exposed skin was tanned and sunburned by the scorching sun, but the weather was too hot and this was the only way they could feel a little cool.
Several people looked at the heat-insulating suit on Xiang Yu and knew that Xiang Yu was from another place.
After a while, a fire truck with sirens blaring drove over. I didn't see the car, but I heard the sound from a long distance away.
Everyone stood up from the ground at the same time, and then walked into the stone room. When they came out, they were holding a small bucket in their hands.
"Get some water, get some water..."
The child jumped happily, snatched the bucket from his mother's hand, and ran towards the team in front.
Xiang Yu followed behind.
The survivors lined up in a long queue and no one cut in line. Even the people in the parking lot came over with a small bucket and lined up at the back of the line.
"Don't crowd, come one by one..." Two people got off the fire truck in front, each of them took a pipe and started to fill water for the survivor who was holding a bucket.
Half a bucket per person, roughly estimated, is only enough for a family of five to drink for two days, but this is already very good, after all, we have come a long way.
Xiang Yu had seen many corpses of people who had died of thirst on the road.
Moreover, in many cities where shelters are located, they don't care about the lives of survivors outside.
Don't even think about delivering water.
After everyone got their water, just when Xiang Yu thought it was about to end, a food truck drove over.
"It's time to eat..."
An auntie in an apron opened the window on the bus and everyone lined up in an orderly manner.
A simple bowl of vegetable porridge has more water than porridge, but after drinking it, you won’t feel hungry for at least six hours.
The aunt noticed Xiang Yu standing outside the crowd. Their food truck did not leave. They waited for the survivors to finish eating and then took back the bowls.
"Little girl, come here..." The aunt waved at Xiang Yu. She could tell at a glance that Xiang Yu was a newcomer.
"You must have come from somewhere else..." Auntie smiled, then picked up an iron bowl and scraped the bottom of the pot several times with a spatula, "Here you go, eat quickly."
There was nothing left at the bottom of the pot. What she scraped for Xiang Yu were just millet grains stuck to the edge of the bucket, but if they were collected together they could still fill a bowl.
They have heard something about the disaster situation in other cities.
Xiang Yu reached out and took it, "Thank you, Auntie."
The porridge had a light taste of salt. Xiang Yu found a corner to squat in and finished the porridge in the bowl in a few gulps.
The few men who were seen in the parking lot before were also squatting in the corner drinking porridge.
Even though they were not full, everyone looked satisfied.
"Little girl, which town are you from..." An old man walked up to Xiang Yu. The watch on his wrist was broken, but he still wore it.
"I'm from K City," Xiang Yu said truthfully.
The old man's cloudy eyes froze for a moment, then he turned his head and looked at Xiang Yu carefully, "K City is so far away from here, how could a girl like you really come from there?"
Seeing that Xiang Yu didn't seem to be lying, the old man put away his suspicious look.
"Little girl, I want to ask you, when you passed by F City, what is it like there now?"
"It's very chaotic. There are many dead people in the city, and people are looting food everywhere. But it's safe in the shelter."
