Chapter 37 Breaking the Ice
Mu Xi leaned lazily on the back of the chair, looking outside with a heavy gaze, not knowing what he was thinking.
Zhao Yeqing didn't press for an answer. She didn't know what had happened outside to change a person's character into this state.
She waved her hand in a casual manner, "Oh, if you don't want to talk about it, then don't talk about it."
"No, it's not what you think." Mu Xi sensed the caution in her expression and smiled, "Actually, I didn't graduate from the police academy."
Zhao Yeqing looked up in surprise.
Mu Xi leaned his head back, looking down at Zhao Yeqing, and said nonchalantly, "I was expelled from school when I was a sophomore."
“I was locked up there for several years.”
Zhao Yeqing's heart trembled suddenly, and he was pulled up again. The words were on the tip of his tongue, but he didn't know how to start for a long time, "You... went to the police academy, and then were locked up for a few years. What did you do?"
"Do you remember why I wanted to be a forest police officer?"
She nodded. "I remember that year when Grandpa Mu was injured in the leg by a poacher."
Mu Xi said in a low voice, "Well, during the summer vacation of my sophomore year, I went to the nature reserve with a few classmates and happened to run into a group of people walking out. I have seen many people like that since I was a child, and I knew at a glance that they were poachers."
At this point, he chuckled as if to mock himself. "I went up to them, grabbed their hands, and asked them to open their backpacks so I could see. When they resisted, one of them pulled out a gun. When I tried to grab the gun, it went off accidentally and hit the person next to me. I was then locked up."
Zhao Yeqing was puzzled, and his tone was anxious and slightly angry, "No, that gun is not yours."
"The gun went off accidentally and hit someone nearby, not the person who pulled out the gun. The person who pulled out the gun was convicted of illegal possession of a gun and the person who was hit was seriously injured. However, his family insisted that he knew nothing and did nothing because there was nothing in their bag. In the end, I was convicted of negligent homicide." Mu Xi said something that had nothing to do with him, and there was no fluctuation in his eyes as he told the whole story.
"But they were carrying guns, how could they be decent people?" Zhao Yeqing was a little at a loss, "Then why didn't you go home in the past few years after you got out? I don't know anything."
When Mu Xi was in his sophomore year, his grandpa and grandma passed away. She didn't come back to attend the funeral because she couldn't get leave. After that, she never heard from Mu Xi again, and he didn't answer her calls. She thought he was too sad, so she gave him some time to calm down. Until later, all the messages she sent fell on deaf ears.
The wind outside the house was howling without stopping. The newly replaced anti-theft doors and windows were very strong and were not affected by the howling. Only the roar of the wind outside could be heard through the gaps.
Mu Xi bent his fingers and tapped Zhao Yeqing on the forehead with his knuckles, breaking the silence in the room. "What are you thinking about? How can you know something that your brother doesn't want you to know?"
"What happened to you later? Why didn't you come back? Where did you go?" Zhao Yeqing looked a little sad.
Mu Xi's parents died early, and after his grandparents passed away, Mu Xi had almost no relatives around him.
I couldn't contact the person at the beginning, and I didn't try to find out the news.
Seeing that the little girl was sad, Mu Xi reached out and rubbed her head. "Later, my classmates and I opened a homestay in the tourism development zone outside the H Province Reserve. We lived quite well."
He knew too well why Zhao Yeqing was sad. Her parents got married passionately, and after giving birth to her, they threw her to her grandparents and never took care of her again. As a result, she kept a distance from interpersonal emotions since she was a child and never dared to force anything.
"Then you don't even contact me?" Zhao Yeqing was angry with himself and with him.
Seeing that she was annoyed, Mu Xi explained eagerly, "It's because of you that I don't want to contact you. I don't know how to tell you about my situation. I thought that I would contact you when I came back after the development was better this year. I saw you in the county town a while ago, but at that time I was contacting the authorities about the cooperative pass for the two nature reserves, so I didn't say hello to you."
Zhao Yeqing's eyes turned red. She was so angry for no reason. She knew that her anger mostly came from her own guilt, but she still took it out on him.
Mu Xi was no longer sitting on the chair. Since she got anxious, he squatted in front of her and explained to her patiently, just like he did when she was angry when she was a child.
She knew that she was lacking in some emotions and had psychological barriers when it came to relationships, and she was always unable to handle them properly.
Zhao Yeqing lowered his head, his throat buzzing, "I'm sorry, brother."
When Mu Xi heard her call him brother, he rubbed her head again, took a step back and sat back in his chair, curling his lips and smiling a little, "Then you have to compensate me."
Zhao Yeqing didn't get angry but smiled instead, with a rare relaxed tone in his voice, "Okay, I'll make you candied sweet potato, scrambled eggs with white ginseng mushrooms, and stir-fried fish with sour sauce."
"No more small fish." He leaned sideways and picked up the rabbit that was unfortunately hit. "Eat this, fresh pepper diced rabbit."
-
The storm continued all night long.
Zhao Yeqing didn't let Mu Xi go out to pick peppers, so the plan to make fresh pepper rabbit cubes was postponed to the next day.
After the two chatted, it seemed as if they had broken the barrier of the few years when they were absent from each other's lives and returned to the atmosphere of their childhood.
The two of them had no mood to cook as they had endless things to talk about. After simply cooking two bowls of noodles for dinner, they went to the terrace in the rain to bring in a few solar panels. Zhao Yeqing suggested that they watch a movie in the living room tonight.
She was indeed a little scared. It felt like the sky was falling outside. She didn't know whether such heavy rain would cause another ground crack or mudslide or landslide.
A person may be strong when facing difficulties alone, but when there is another person, he or she will become more fragile.
Mu Xi had no objection and lowered her head to select movies on her tablet. "Which one have you seen?"
Zhao Yeqing picked through the snacks and said, "Except for that animated movie, I haven't watched any other ones."
Mu Xi nodded when he heard this, "Very good, nothing else has changed except the height over the years."
This is a mockery of her for only growing in height but not in brains.
Zhao Yeqing retorted, "Superficial or not, the animated films in the Lunar New Year period are very good, all of them are hilarious and tear-jerking, and are no worse than those messy movies that are made with money."
She took two bags of potato chips. It is better to eat crispy and delicious puffed food while watching a movie.
The final choice was another animated film.
Zhao Yeqing strongly recommended it to Mu Xi, wanting him to feel that today's animated films are really good.
The two of them sat side by side on the bench, with the tablet on the table in front of them playing.
The movie tells the story of two bears in the forest.
Mu Xi read half of it and nodded, "It is indeed very appropriate. Look at this brother, he is exactly like you."
"Innocent, kind, cute, and very strong. Thank you for the compliment."
Huhu and Xuebing sat between the two of them, watching with great interest.
The tear-jerking moment came two-thirds of the way through the movie. Zhao Yeqing opened her eyes wide to stop her tears from rolling down, not wanting to wipe them in front of Mu Xi.
A hand stretched out in front of me, with a piece of paper between the bony fingers.
Mu Xi's voice was a little helpless, "You know you'll cry, but you still watch it?"
