Chapter 8 Shang Chen: [This is not a normal way for a married couple to get along.]
When Wenxi drove to the Shang family's old house, Shang Chen had not yet arrived.
She went in first and chatted with Shang Chen's mother and sister for a while.
The Shang family has three siblings. The eldest, Shang Chen, is thirty years old and recently got married; he is Wen Xi's husband.
The second child, Shang Mu, is a 25-year-old girl, unmarried.
The third son, Shang Ze, is 21 years old and is currently a senior at Peking University.
Shang Chen arrived with his father.
As soon as he got out of the car, the father glanced at his son and said, "A rare guest indeed."
Shang Chen: "I'm here with Wenxi."
"No wonder," said Mr. Shang. "I thought you had finally remembered your old father and mother."
Shang Chen: "..."
After leaving a message, Mr. Shang went into the old house first, took off his coat as if he knew better, and went to the kitchen to help his wife serve the dishes. The two chatted and laughed.
Wenxi likes Shang because Shang's parents have a good relationship and a very harmonious family atmosphere.
Shang Mu also came back for dinner today. Seeing Wen Xi staring at Shang's parents, he smiled and said, "Sister-in-law must be curious how my parents, who are so loving and kind, could raise such a rigid person as my brother?"
Wen Xi raised an eyebrow and saw Shang Chen sit down next to her.
She calmly replied, "I am indeed a little curious."
Shang Mu: "This is all my parents' fault!"
“When they were little, they always wanted to spend time alone, leaving my brother and me with my older brother. To keep us in check, my older brother would often have a stern face, and it became a habit over time.”
Wen Xi turned to look at Shang Chen, "Is that so?"
Shang Chen: "Don't listen to her nonsense."
Shang Mu clapped his hands: "That's it!"
"Look at him, he has such a stern face, and his tone is just like our homeroom teacher."
Shang Ze chimed in, "Second Sister, don't wrong Brother."
“My brother used to attend parent-teacher conferences for me. He was even more serious than my homeroom teacher, and he intimidated my homeroom teacher.”
Wenxi couldn't help but smile.
A very faint smile, yet remarkably relaxed.
Seeing that she was in a good mood, Shang Chen didn't want to spoil the mood by scolding Shang Mu and Shang Ze.
Just then, Mr. Shang brought the soup up, and Mrs. Shang called out, "Shang Chen, what are you standing there for? Serve Xixi a bowl of soup!"
“You said Xixi likes pork tripe and chicken soup, so I spent a long time researching how to make it.”
Shang Chen got up and helped Wen Xi fill a bowl with soup.
"Try it."
Wenxi: "Thank you."
At first, Wenxi was surprised by Shang Chen's thoughtfulness and kindness, but she got used to it later.
She knew that this was due to Shang Chen's upbringing.
He has no feelings for her, but his upbringing and sense of responsibility will make him take care of his wife.
Shang Chen glanced down at her. "Why aren't you wearing a ring?"
Wenxi: "I'm not used to wearing it, and it's not very convenient."
This was his reply to her that morning, and he returned it exactly as it was.
Shang Chen's gaze towards her suddenly held a deeper meaning.
After dinner, Wenxi and Shang Chen each drove to their respective companies.
On the way to the airport, Shang Chen suddenly looked down at his hands.
He wasn't wearing his wedding ring, and Wenxi was unhappy.
Shang Chen picked up his phone and called his aunt, "Have someone send the ring to the airport."
Before the plane took off, Shang Chen received the wedding ring and slowly slipped it onto her finger.
When he gets back, he should explain things to Wenxi.
A week has passed in the blink of an eye.
In the afternoon, her aunt called her: "We received a package at home, sent from Yunnan."
"I haven't bought anything recently."
Wenxi thought for a long time but still couldn't guess who sent it.
She only went to Yunnan once when she graduated from high school, and she didn't have many friends there.
"Could it be something belonging to Shang Chen?"
Auntie: "It says your name, Madam, on it."
Wenxi, a lawyer, had heard about her colleagues receiving threatening packages and calmly said, "Then leave it for now, I'll open it when I get back tonight."
When Wenxi got home from get off work that evening, she opened a box of coffee beans.
She asked several friends, and they all said it wasn't a gift from them.
Besides, who among young people these days still uses their real name when sending packages?
Wenxi racked her brains but still couldn't guess who sent it.
Just as she was wondering, Wenxi received a message from Shang Chen.
Have you received the coffee beans?
Wenxi was flattered, but her doubts were instantly resolved.
It's perfectly reasonable for Shang Chen to send a package using her real name.
【Received it. What made you think of sending me coffee beans?】
Do you like it?
[Haven't tried it yet, but it smells delicious.]
Try it first.
Faced with Shang Chen's sudden thoughtfulness, Wen Xi didn't know how to respond.
Saying thank you feels too formal.
Not saying anything... makes it even more awkward.
After much editing and revision, the final reply was just one word: 【Okay.】
Shang Chen stared at his phone, which kept displaying "typing in progress."
He waited for a few minutes, and finally received a single word—"Okay."
Everyone says he is taciturn and sparing with his words, but now it seems that Wenxi is no less so.
Shang Chen picked up his phone and slowly typed out a line of text.
I've been away on a business trip for a week.
Wenxi was puzzled, of course she knew that Shang Chen had been away on a business trip for a week.
Was Shang Chen hinting at something to her?
This week, you haven't called or sent me a single message.
This is not a normal way for couples to interact.
Wenxi was startled by Shang Chen's words.
Out of curiosity, she couldn't help but ask another question.
What is a normal way for couples to get along?
Shang Chen didn't actually know; he just subconsciously recalled the scenes of his parents interacting.
My parents.
Wenxi: [...Are you free to answer the phone?]
【have. 】
The next second, Wen Xi dialed Shang Chen's number, "Hello?"
"Um."
“Mr. Shang, I don’t think there’s such a thing as a normal way for couples to get along.” Wen Xi began to analyze carefully with Shang Chen: “The way couples get along varies from person to person, and they are all discovered through daily life.”
"When Mom cooks, Dad helps by chopping vegetables; when Mom wants to arrange flowers, Dad helps by cutting flowers in the garden; Dad prepares surprises for Mom every few days for holidays... This kind of relationship is not suitable for us."
Shang Chen was thinking about how his father was away on a business trip, and how his mother would send him messages to check on him every day, including three meals a day, and they would have a fixed one-hour video call every night.
He was away on a business trip for a week, and Wenxi didn't send a single message or make a single phone call.
How will you know it won't suit you if you don't try?
Wenxi: "Do you know how to chop vegetables?"
There was a long silence on the other end of the phone before a deep voice finally spoke.
“I can learn.”
Should we teach Shang Chen how to cut vegetables?
Those hands that stir up trouble on Wall Street, now wielding a cleaver in the kitchen, slicing potatoes?
Wenxi couldn't even imagine this scene.
Shang Chen calmly corrected, "Also, don't call me President Shang. You're not my subordinate."
Wen Xi chuckled, "Then what should I call you? Husband?"
The way he uttered those two words was tinged with a hint of amusement amidst his indifference.
Shang Chen's breathing suddenly became heavy.
After Wenxi shouted it out, she also felt that something was wrong.
There was a moment of silence between them.
