Chapter 78 The wind picked up, and the air was cold...
A breeze picked up, and the air was chilly. Ye Yuying heard a noise inside and went inside, leaning on her cane.
Cheng Mingdu was already seated at the dining table, with a breakfast prepared for two in front of him. However, he did not move for a long time, quietly browsing world politics on a tablet computer.
It seems they were waiting for her to come together.
The morning light streamed through the huge French windows, bathing him in an unreal, thin glow.
He heard footsteps, looked up, and glanced at her.
It was as if the man who had held her tightly in his arms last night, letting her sob against his neck, was just an illusion.
She felt she still dared to face him.
As she walked toward the dining table, she began to chat as if it were a casual conversation.
"I didn't expect it to be colder by the lake than in the city."
"Who told you not to wear your coat properly..." he said, his voice flat, feigning reproach, just like before, his concern rarely showing on his face.
She smiled, put her cane aside, and slowly sat down at the dining table.
It felt so good to spend the first day of the new year with Cheng Mingdu.
She felt that such a wonderful start would make everything go smoothly for the whole year.
She picked up her coffee cup and clinked it against his, her heart instantly filled with a sense of satisfaction. She sincerely said:
"I kind of miss the old days... even though it was a tough time back then..."
But at least it's not like now, where she truly bears the fate of everyone in the company, making her afraid to die easily and having to arrange everything before going into surgery.
Cheng Mingdu casually placed the coffee cup in front of him on his index finger, looked up at her, and asked, "Do you think these past eight years have helped you achieve your goals?"
Ye Yuying took a small sip and pondered noncommittally:
"It's hard to say. There's a big difference between reality and fantasy. I may have gained some things, but I've also lost some. And I'm shouldering greater responsibilities. All of these things keep pushing me forward..."
The tone of her voice at the end of her sentence, mixed with the whistling wind outside the French windows, carried a slightly chilly quality.
"If you need any help, please let me know." Cheng Mingdu gently put down his coffee cup.
Ye Yuying raised an eyebrow jokingly and said, "It's simple, just keep President Feng calm. After all, the public opinion hasn't calmed down yet, and I'm quite afraid he'll regret it."
Cheng Mingdu slightly moved his fingers, locked the tablet screen, and handed her a pair of chopsticks.
"Don't worry, he can take this risk." He paused, speaking very slowly, "I mean, any substantial help you can ask for."
For a moment, she couldn't look away, and he caught the slight flicker in her eyes. She then looked away, as if gazing at the still-bare magnolia tree in the distance.
"I can't think of anything," she said softly. "I'll think of something later."
The phone on the table suddenly vibrated.
She instinctively pressed the lock screen button, not letting the screen stay on for too long.
Cheng Mingdu didn't lower his head, but he seemed to sense the panic in her fingertips. He loosened his grip on the chopsticks, then tightened it again.
He didn't see the words on the screen clearly, nor did he have such a strong voyeuristic desire, but he could guess that the unique symbol in the conversation was the so-called "Echo" with just a glance.
"Going back to Jiangcheng today?" He paused for a few seconds before suddenly asking.
Ye Yuying nodded without hesitation: "It's time to go back. I have a lot of things to take care of."
His gaze swept over the direction of her phone, darkening slightly.
It couldn't be because of that—Echo, could it?

Spring is like a child peeking through a crack in the door, who is then pushed from behind and forced into the world after the New Year.
Before anyone knew it, the advertising screens on the streets of Jiangcheng had begun to play the countdown "There are XX days left until the opening of the Olympic Games" on a loop, and the shop windows of various brands were displaying limited edition sneakers. Even the air was filled with a restless energy that was about to explode.
This countdown must have started a while ago, but it hasn't attracted as much attention as it has recently.
During today's meeting, Ding Chu proposed a bold idea—to collaborate with Olympic athlete Sun Ying on the promotion of artificial exoskeletons.
Because Sun Ying is currently the most sought-after track and field athlete, having just broken the Asian record and receiving offers from two international brands, the news was trending on social media for a whole week.
As soon as the proposal was put forward, people in the meeting room immediately started joking. Everyone seemed to be used to Ding Chu's wildly imaginative ideas in marketing.
Ding Chu's advantage lies in the fact that her ideas are never limited by the size of the company, a rare talent.
Old Wu said in a bluntly realistic tone, "It's unlikely. Not to mention that we don't have any spare cash on hand, even if we did, it would be almost impossible to negotiate something like the Olympics without the backing of a national-level enterprise."
Ye Yuying was unusually silent for a while before slowly nodding, smiling faintly, and agreeing, "Old Wu is quite right."
Ding Chu was immediately deflated.
But Ye Yuying tapped the table lightly with her fingertips and added slowly:
"But let's write out the plan first. You have to have a dream, think about it first, otherwise it will always be 'impossible'."
Ding Chu was the first to snap out of it. "Okay." Her eyes lit up, and her pen scratched across the paper. "I'll revise the detailed plan tonight."
Old Wu clicked his tongue but didn't object. He just twirled the pen in his hand and said, "Fine, young man, go for it if you want. Write it down first and we'll see."
The meeting continued, and everyone's attention was drawn back to the version update and optimization.
She looked away, as if nothing had happened.
