Looking at Feng Huaxian's retreating figure, he snapped out of his shock and frowned. "Hua'er, what happened to her..."
"She's changed, hasn't she?" A clear, youthful voice rang out from behind.
Gu Changyuan turned his head—or rather, lowered his head—and saw a little girl, slightly taller than Gu Liyan, speaking in a mature tone, "People change, I didn't expect it to be so fast!"
"Ping'er, are you all better now?" Gu Changyuan squatted down and patted her head with a smile.
"That's so rude of you. Do you really think I'm a child?" Ping'er said irritably.
"Haha, sorry, sorry, I just mistook you for my junior brother Gu Liyan... Oh right! I have to go back for a bit, could you tell Hua Gu for me later?" Gu Changyuan suddenly remembered that he went down the mountain to buy roast chicken for Gu Liyan.
Ping'er started to say irritably, "I'm not..." Before she could finish, Gu Changyuan had already disappeared, making her stomp her feet in anger. Turning around, she saw Rui Xin's face and continued, "I'm not... Where's that idiot Gu Liyan!"
Gu Liyan drifted off to sleep without realizing it, and Yan Muxue also dozed off beside him, falling asleep on the table.
Gu Yan pushed open the door and came in. He saw Yan Muxue sleeping lazily, shook his head helplessly, but didn't say anything.
Carefully carrying a bowl of medicine, she approached Gu Liyan, patted him gently, and said softly, "Little Li, get up and take your medicine."
Hearing Gu Yan's words, Gu Liyan groggily opened her eyes. Seeing it was Gu Yan, she was startled and instantly widened her sleepiness, becoming flustered and at a loss for words. "Master, Master, I... I was so sleepy, I don't know how I fell asleep. I'm sorry, I didn't have time to pay my respects to you. Please don't punish me..."
Seeing Gu Liyan's flustered appearance, Gu Yan felt guilty and took his hand, gently comforting him, "Master knows you're exhausted. Come on, drink your medicine and then rest."
Gu Liyan was stunned for a moment, looking at Gu Yan with some surprise. He lowered his head to feel the warmth of Gu Yan's touch on him; it was so incredibly warm! His eyes welled up with tears, and he instinctively called out to Gu Yan, "Father..."
When Gu Yan heard Gu Liyan call him "father," his originally gentle and loving expression turned gloomy again.
With a cold face, she placed the medicine on the chair by the bedside, stood up indifferently, her back to Gu Liyan revealing no emotion, and said calmly, "I suddenly remembered I have something to do. Remember to drink the medicine while it's hot."
After saying that, he turned and left.
Gu Liyan watched Gu Yan leave, wanting to say something but unable to utter a word. Looking dejectedly at the bowl of steaming medicine, he thought to himself:
“My father doesn’t know I’m his son yet. If I tell him now, he’ll be too busy treating my broken meridians to do anything else. I absolutely can’t burden him right now. Besides… judging by the timeline, the demon invasion is fast approaching!”
Gu Liyan picked up the medicine bowl, a warm sensation spreading to his palm. He smiled faintly and said, "The medicine is a bit bitter, but it's still warm. I'm content with that!"
After tilting his head back and swallowing the medicine in one gulp, Gu Liyan lay down again.
Outside the window, Gu Yan watched as Gu Liyan obediently drank the medicine, and only then did she breathe a sigh of relief.
"Although it is said that a teacher for a day is a father for life, Xiao Li, I am only your teacher and cannot be your father. Because, as my son, I have too much to bear, and I cannot drag you into the abyss!"
Just as he turned to leave, he saw Gu Li walking over, playing with a new wooden sword.
"Gu Li." Gu Yan greeted him. "Why didn't you go to your meditation retreat and instead came here?"
"Hey, Gu Yan, you're asking for it, aren't you?" Gu Li pointed at Gu Yan and said irritably, "My nephew is sick, can't I even come to see him?"
Gu Yan glared at Gu Li and snorted coldly, "Then what are you doing with a broken wooden sword?"
"Of course it's a gift for my nephew! We agreed on a sword every year, growing one inch longer each year! Once Xiao Li transforms into human form, I'll give him a real sword!" Gu Li proudly raised his chin. "Envy the true bond between us, uncle and nephew!"
"I think you're the real jerk!" Gu Yan said irritably.
Gu Li squinted at Gu Yan, and sneered arrogantly, "Hmph, a cold-blooded and ruthless guy like you wouldn't understand! I bet you've never given Xiao Li a gift since he was a child, right? Tsk tsk tsk, Gu Changyuan is one thing, but Xiao Li has been with you since he was a child, and you haven't given him anything. You really are a good master!"
"Who, who said I didn't give them? I did give Xiao Li candy figurines..." Gu Yan said, her face turning red involuntarily.
He realized that, apart from buying Xiao Li a sugar figurine on their first trip down the mountain, he hadn't bought him anything else since...
Gu Li sneered, "Tsk tsk tsk, do you think Xiao Li would still have kept all those snacks you gave her? My sword may not be very valuable, but Xiao Li has kept it since her first sword!"
"You..." Gu Yan wanted to argue with him, but Gu Changyuan ran back and saw that they were about to fight. He hurriedly stepped forward and respectfully said, "Greetings, Master, Uncle, I'm back."
Upon seeing Gu Changyuan approach, the two stopped arguing and looked at him with serious expressions.
"Didn't I tell you to take good care of your junior brother? What are you doing down the mountain again!" Gu Yan said irritably.
Gu Changyuan took out a roast chicken and said, "Junior brother wanted to eat roast chicken, so I went down the mountain to buy some for him."
Gu Yan frowned and muttered, "How come I didn't know Xiao Li liked roast chicken?"
Gu Yan secretly noted this down, then waved to Gu Changyuan, "Alright, he just took his medicine and lay down, so he probably hasn't fallen asleep yet. Go and take it to him."
