Chapter 113 Traces by the Lake
"Before coming here, I went to see my dad at the company. He gave me this as a reward!" Nie Yao shrugged and explained with a smile, "It's my first time as a daughter returning to the family and representing the Nie family at such a formal event. I don't think I'll be rewarded for messing things up!"
Li Jinxing nodded in understanding, his frown relaxed, and he said with a faint smile: "It seems that your father treats you well!"
"Yeah, probably to make up for it..." Seeing that he was still reluctant to get in the car, Nie Yao turned her head and asked with a smile, "You're not getting in yet? Don't you trust my driving skills?"
Li Jinxing burst into laughter and sat directly in the passenger seat. He said with a smile: "If he can drive a jeep through the jungle, his driving skills must be good!"
"You even know about this?" Nie Yao looked at him in surprise, wanting to know if he had investigated a lot of her past.
"Have you forgotten that you talked about this experience in your previous speech at South China University?" Li Jinxing reminded her with a smile.
Nie Yao then patted the back of her head and said with a smack of her lips, "I almost forgot..."
"You've probably forgotten more than just this one thing..." Li Jinxing reminded her meaningfully. Nie Yao didn't think much of it and said with a wry smile, "Maybe too many things have happened recently and my mind is confused!"
Having said this, she drove directly towards the lake.
"Is this the place you wanted to bring me to?" After the car stopped at the lakeshore, Li Jinxing followed Nie Yao out of the car. Looking at the somewhat desolate scenery here, he couldn't help laughing: "This is not a good place for a date!"
"Who said coming to the lake is a date?" Nie Yao glared at him, then said with a mixture of anger and amusement, "I'm talking to you about something serious!"
Li Jinxing raised his eyebrows and signaled her to speak.
Nie Yao took Li Jinxing for a few steps by the lake, then squatted down again, pointing to the still wet dirt road by the lake, and whispered, "Look—"
Li Jinxing glanced along the bend of her finger and asked thoughtfully, "The dirt road by the lake is always wet. What's so special about it?"
"Investor Dickson's lakeside villa is nearby. There aren't any dirt roads in the villa complex, but I just followed the maid to his collection room and noticed some dirt by the window, though it's already dried..."
She paused here and continued her analysis, "I just checked the weather on my phone. It only rained a little from 3 to 4 a.m. yesterday, but it wasn't enough to get the road to the villa wet. So this person probably came from the lake!"
Hearing her analysis, Li Jinxing frowned slightly and said in a deep voice, "No wonder the surveillance cameras on the lakeside road didn't capture any suspicious vehicles in the middle of the night. It seems the thieves took a boat from across the lake, landed, and then sneaked into the villa and broke in through the window!"
Nie Yao nodded and replied with a faint smile: "That's right, so we just need to find out what's on the other side of the lake, and we should be able to find the thieves!"
Li Jinxing nodded slightly, picked up the phone and called his assistant Li Qin, and gave him instructions on this matter.
"Oh, right. I just asked the maid, and she complained that the thieves had rummaged through the drawers in the house, even the mistress's dresser. So I presume the thieves are looking for something very small, so they're not after the Spear of Anubis at all..."
