Exit Project
"Why did you want to quit? I want to hear the truth."
Yu Zou handed the paper cup filled with coffee to Fang Bu and sat down opposite him in Ji Huisheng's office. Now, it was just the two of them.
Fang Bu didn't dare to look up at Yu Zou. Holding the paper cup, he said, "Fang Jin said that if I don't withdraw, he will go on a hunger strike and would rather die. I can't watch him like that."
Yu Zou was even more puzzled, never expecting this reason: "Why? Did he misunderstand something? Did he give a reason?"
Fang Jin was indeed not home that night when Fang Bu had dinner with Yu Zou. Fang Bu waited until he fell asleep, but he still didn't come back. The next day, Fang Bu went to school and came home as usual. When he got home, he saw Fang Jin sitting upright at the dining table, with the food that Yu Zou had packed on the table.
His initial joy vanished upon seeing Fang Jin's dazed and unfocused face. His heart leaped into his throat, and he shoved Fang Jin, his overly thin shoulders digging into his hands. He called out, only to realize that his own voice was just as dry and hoarse.
Fang Jin slowly looked up at him, as if she were being magnified in slow motion, and said, "Brother, where did you come from?"
"It was given to me by a senior in the same major." Fang Bu sat down opposite him, unpacked the package, and although it was past its best taste, it was still a rare and high-end food for them. "Perfect timing, Fang Jin, I need to talk to you."
"Alpha?" Fang Jin completely ignored his brother's question and asked himself.
"yes."
Fang Bu opened the package and placed a plate of creamy mushroom soup in front of Fang Jin. Fang Jin glanced at it and then suddenly stood up and slammed the plate against the wall. The force was so great that his vision went completely black. The soup that splashed on the wall was like an electric current that drilled into his head, tearing at his nerves and consciousness, and pushing him to the ground.
"Fang Jin?!"
"Stay away from him." Fang Jin hadn't regained her sight yet, but she still managed to say it with her eyes closed.
"Why?"
“There’s no reason,” Fang Bu said. “He just kept saying that if I didn’t quit, he would die.”
“This project is very important, it would be a real shame if you withdrew. If your brother has any misunderstandings about me, I can explain it to him personally.” Yu Zou’s eyes were firm as he tried to persuade him to stay, but in the end he could only say, “Go back and rest for a while. I’ll reserve a place for you, and you can think about it carefully for a few more days. If the answer is still to withdraw, I will respect your choice to leave the project.”
Fang Bu himself was also reluctant, and under Yu Zou's persuasion, his mind wavered several times.
Yu Zou stood up, took a paper cup, filled another cup at the coffee machine, and said, "Okay, want to go for a walk? I need some fresh air after losing such an excellent team member like you."
Fang Bu immediately stood up, holding the paper cup, and said, "Okay."
The two left the classroom. Yu Zou was still thinking about how to persuade them to stay when suddenly the door to the classroom at the end of the corridor slammed open, the sound so loud that Yu Zou could hear it. Du Pianjian stormed out, her collar loose and her clothes disheveled. As she walked and straightened herself, she saw the two people opposite her and froze on the spot.
Fang Bu's face turned bitter, and his body went limp. The old neck ring could not withstand Du Pianjian's powerful pheromones. He was immediately affected, and the paper cup in his hand fell to the ground, coffee splashed on the legs of both of their trousers, and he collapsed.
Yu Zou quickly grabbed the person and shouted, "Hey! Fang Bu! What's wrong with you!"
Du Pianjian put on the neck ring and adjusted the wristband. She quickly walked over, took out an inhibitor from her inner pocket, and injected it into Fang Bu. The inhibitor took effect quickly, but Fang Bu was already covered in sweat, weak and powerless, and could hardly stand up on his own.
Only then did Yu Zou realize what had happened. He became even more worried and helped him stand up, saying, "I'll take you to the infirmary."
Fang Bu waved his hand, about to speak, when the phone rang. A loud accusation came from the neighbor, which all three present could hear clearly: "Fang Bu! Don't you pay for your water?! It's flowing all the way to my ceiling, you have to pay for it!"
Fang Bu felt dizzy and disoriented. He immediately thought something must have happened to Fang Jin! This morning, Fang Jin said he wouldn't go out. Frugality was ingrained in the two poor brothers. If Fang Jin was alright, how could this have happened? He wanted to run back immediately, but his legs felt weak and he couldn't take a single step.
"I'll take you there."
Yu Zou's conscience wouldn't allow him to watch Fang Bu, who had just been suppressed, leave alone to deal with a difficult matter. He helped Fang Bu take a step past Du Pianjian, but a pulling force forced him to stop.
Yu Zou turned around, and Du Pianjian tugged at the corner of his clothes, her expression calm, and said lightly, "I have something to tell you when you're done with your work."
The water did indeed flow out; it was a very pale pink.
Fang Bu opened the door and rushed in, while Yu Zou and his secretary, who had arrived at the same time, stayed outside to deal with the furious neighbors. Problems that can be solved with money usually don't bother people for too long.
Fang Jin committed suicide by cutting his wrists in the bathroom. His pale wrists rested on the faucet, and a wet piece of paper floated on the surface of the bathtub, the writing on it already blurred. Fang Cun felt a sharp pain in his wrist, and the smell of blood made him nauseous. He couldn't remember how he pressed down on his brother's wound, how he pulled down the curtains to cover his malnourished body, how he bit his brother's gland to transmit his pheromones to sustain his life, or how he took his brother to the emergency room with Yu Zou's help.
When he regained consciousness, he was standing in front of the doctor, listening to the doctor's reprimand: "Young people should play in moderation! Fortunately, he was rescued this time. Temporary marking is fine, but constantly changing temporary markings in a short period of time will be too much for his body to handle, especially since his congenital glands are weak, which could seriously endanger his life."
"Thank you, doctor. Are there any precautions for the patient?"
It was the sound of Yu playing.
Gradually, even the voices of the doctor and Yu Zou faded from view. Fang Bu returned to Fang Jin's bedside, feeling utterly lost. When Fang Jin woke up, the first thing he asked was, "Was the tap turned off?"
Fang Bu held back his tears, raised his hand to hit Fang Jin, but instead landed a loud slap on his own face, saying in a tearful voice, "It's my fault for not taking good care of you. It's not your fault, it's my fault."
Fang Jin's tears also fell in strings, her thin hands covering her face as she cried, both of them shedding tears softly.
Yu Zou, who had just entered, witnessed this scene and then quietly slipped out. Remembering Du Pianjian's words before he left, he took out his phone only to find he didn't have Du's number.
When Fang Jin's health improved slightly, Yu Zou arranged for him to be transferred to the Sixth Hospital, with He Honghan as the attending physician. Also transferred were the soaked papers that the secretary had found in the Fang brothers' rented house.
The next day after get off work, He Honghan called Yu Zou over, his expression serious, his fingers interlaced in a fist, and asked in a low voice, "Is your wife named Du Pianjian?"
"Watch your words." Yu Zou closed his eyes, pressing his thumb and forefinger against his brow and spreading them apart. Big and small matters piled up, and he was really a little tired.
The screen opened, revealing a series of photos. Among them were crumpled pieces of paper with delicate, distorted black handwriting. He Honghan extended a retractable pen and touched one of the papers, saying, "These are Fang Jin's diary. I'm quite certain he was raped by his teacher. Du Pianxing, the name is clear. Is he related to your wife?"
Yu Zou suddenly opened his eyes, his double eyelids creases appearing even deeper from drowsiness: "Next."
"That's not all. Look at this sentence, 'When can those paintings have my name on them?' plagiarized student work; 'I can't live without him, I can't control myself, I keep wanting him' sounds like tagging and control, doesn't it?"
The circles drawn on the wall screen by the extendable pen were shocking; the truth was even more obscure and difficult to understand than a few words could convey.
He Honghan was very close to Yu Zou, whispering quickly in his ear: "Fang Jin's glands have been diagnosed with high concentrations of chemically synthesized pheromones. He's addicted to pheromones, which is strictly prohibited. Your wife's relative is a criminal; he lives in a criminal den."
He Honghan finished speaking in one breath, pressed the retractable pen on the table, shoved it in, and slammed it down: "I'll say it again, dating with normal people is normal no matter what, dating with abnormal people is never normal. You absolutely cannot agree to this engagement. If he gets involved, you'll have a hard time getting out of this mess."
Could this be the reason why Shao Yuan wanted him to fulfill the marriage agreement?
He Honghan stepped back to her desk, opened a drawer, and handed him a medical report: "Yu Zou, don't you feel that there are suddenly more mentally ill people around you? Could this be a coincidence?"
Yu Zou took it; the cover had the patient's full name written on it: Li Li
“I never believe in coincidences. But today Fang Bu told me that he is going to St. Hele Sanatorium to treat Fang Jin.”
Yu Zou was puzzled. What was his relationship with Ji Huisheng and his wife?
"In Lili's diagnosis, St. Herrera Sanatorium also came up. She was extremely afraid of that place. This is not the first time I have heard about this place from a patient. And so far, all the patients I have treated who mentioned St. Herrera have committed suicide."
He Honghan took a USB drive from the bottom of the drawer and plugged it into the computer. The photos on the wall screen were replaced with medical records. One gray medical record after another slid past, indicating the passing of patients. The last medical record had an attached link at the end, which He Honghan clicked.
Yu Zou's pupils contracted.
On the back of the medical record, a logo was drawn in pencil, which was the trademark of Yulong.
“Every patient who came out of St. Helena, including your teacher’s wife Lili, showed extreme fear and avoidance after seeing this sign. Why is that?”
