I breathed a sigh of relief, then blamed myself for it.

Faced with He Can's question, Yu Zou couldn't even remember how he answered.

"The next one is Du Pianjian."

The words kept repeating in his mind, making him unable to resist the urge to personally confirm Du Pianjian's safety immediately. Putting the candy in his pocket, he said, "Officer, I've cooperated for a long time, shouldn't you let us go now?"

“You can leave, but your mother still needs to cooperate with our investigation.” He Can followed Yu Zou’s gaze and looked over. Yu Wangyue was curled up in the coat of some police officer. He added, “She is a key witness, and we will protect her safety.”

Yu Zou nodded, took two steps to the side, and dialed Du Pianjian's number, but no one answered after three attempts. Anxious and worried, Yu Zou went back to his mother, explained the situation, and left.

The car sped along the road. Yi Song was analyzing the location of Du Pianjian's bracelet; it was still at Shoushu University, but hadn't moved for almost three hours. The university was brightly lit, and young, inexperienced students came and went. Yu Zou felt uneasy and, following Yi Song's instructions, went to the university hospital.

He went up to the third floor. The hallway was lit only by emergency lights, with a square glow emanating from the room at the far end. Yu Zou walked slowly towards it, stopping at the third doorway, his gaze fixed on the light. He pressed the handle up and down, and the door opened silently. One of the three rows of beds near the window was hidden by a curtain. He lifted the curtain, and a strange face lay peacefully asleep on the bed. Long, soft black hair was spread out beneath the body, the skin was deathly pale, and the hands rested on the lower abdomen.

Yu Zou stood by the hospital bed, staring at the bracelets on the hands, almost murmuring, "Yi Song."

The blue dot flashes, the bracelet screen lights up, and the hyacinth slowly opens.

Yu Zou felt a chill run down his spine. Why was Du Pianjian's bracelet on a stranger? Why hadn't Yi Song called the police? He had set the bracelet so that only Du Pianjian herself could remove it. Forcible disassembly or operation by someone else would trigger Yi Song's protection program, let alone the fact that it was on this woman's wrist.

Yu Zou tried to wake the woman several times, but she showed no signs of waking up. He decided to call the police. He went straight to the room at the end of the street. He couldn't just sit and wait to die; he had to immediately sort out all possible clues around him, and the room at the end of the street was the first place he needed to go.

A faint light shone through the small window. Yu Zou stood outside the door, his hand abruptly stopping a second before he could press the button. Inside, Du Pianjian sat on the hospital bed, her face grim. Her clothes were half-undone, revealing bandaged arms and chest. Her lips moved, but the person outside couldn't hear what she was saying. Xu Bo was tidying up the medicines beside her, pouring the yellow liquid into a tray, instantly corroding the blood-stained cotton.

Yu Zou was overjoyed, but a lot of questions were swirling in his mind that he needed Du Pianjian to tell him personally. The door was pushed open a crack, and the sound that came through stopped the crack from widening further.

"Yu Zou will be heartbroken."

Xu Bo's voice carried a hint of reluctance: "That's a teacher he respects. You're lying to him like this. He's so pitiful."

"He's using your pity? Make yourself clear."

Du Pianjian's dismissive reply sent a chill down Yu Zou's spine. His clenched fingers tightened, and his blood instantly turned cold, freezing him in place, forcing him to eavesdrop.

"But he's really good to you, and you..."

Du Pianjian waved her hand to signal him to stop: "I admit, it wouldn't have gone so smoothly for anyone else. I'm almost not even thinking about getting a divorce anymore. Since he can't be marked anyway, it's perfect for deterring those annoying Alphas."

Xu Bo paused for a moment, then hesitated before asking, "Should we still try to acquire Yu Long next?"

Why not?

How do I get it?

Du Pianjian didn't reply; instead, a sharp clanging sound rang out as the glass bottle was thrown into the trash can.

Xu Bo then said, "Are we still going to kill him according to the original plan and inherit his shares? Pianjian, I don't understand you. What exactly does Yu Zou mean to you?"

In the silence, Yu Zou's heart also stopped.

"A dog?" Du Pianjian sneered. "Really, do you understand when I'm telling you? Where are the sleeping pills?"

Xu Bo handed him an unlabeled white medicine bottle, but when Du Pianjian reached out to take it, he pulled his hand back slightly. "An overdose can cause irreversible damage to the body."

“I know.” Du Pianjian snatched the medicine bottle, its contents sloshing around. “What can I do? I feel nauseous whenever I smell his pheromones.”

My brain was buzzing, my vision blurred to the point of black, but my hearing was sharp, clearly turning Du Pianjian's words into knives and stabbing them into my heart.

The tie was so tight he could hardly breathe; it was tied for him by Du Pianjian that morning.

It turns out that at that moment, he really wanted to hold her hand tightly.

Perhaps in every moment that stirred his heart, he was holding his weapon, wishing he could kill himself.

But why? Just to get Yulong?

The fragments of his heart couldn't piece together a complete answer; only a sliver of survival instinct drove him to hide in another room in the building when he saw Du Pianjian get up.

Through the small window, Yu Zou watched as Du Pianjian entered the third ward. After she came out, she had a bracelet on her wrist and tapped on the screen. Then, the phone rang abruptly in the quiet room.

The caller was Du Pianjian.

Just as Yu Zou's call to Du Pianjian went unanswered, this phone call was destined to remain silent.

It wasn't until he gripped the steering wheel and felt a burning pain in his palm that Yu Zou realized he had pinched his own hand until it bled.

The phone rang; it was Du Pianjian calling again. The countdown was ticking, the beeping urging him on. Yu Zou jerked the steering wheel, the car screaming as it slid forward, plunging into the night and roaring towards the deserted area.

The countdown timer seemed to control his heartbeat; his phone lit up and went out, the countdown ticking away. The hyacinth bloomed again, and Ison's voice rang out: "Administrator Z, Commander J is looking for you. Share your location?"

Yu Zou replied decisively: "No, Du Pianjian intercepted my location information."

"Okay, I'll turn off synchronization of information on my phone, fitness tracker, and car."

Du Pianjian's words and image tormented him repeatedly in his mind until the road in front of him became distorted. His pheromones seemed to materialize in his body, and his body, known for its stability, could not withstand the mental turmoil, thus triggering his sensitive period.

The car stopped at the top of the mountain. Yu Zou took out an inhibitor from the storage box, injected it into the back of his neck, and slumped back in his seat.

All of Du Pianjian's seemingly illogical actions now had a reasonable explanation. Her proactive displays of intimacy were to gain his trust, her rejection of further closeness was an instinctive resistance, and the sleeping pills, one after another, were a chronic illness injected into his body.

From the very beginning, Du Pianjian never treated him as a lover, but as a dead man.

And yet, foolishly, I survived crisis after crisis, swallowing the sweetness laced with a knife with a smile, expressing my gratitude.

dog?

The pain was so intense it made me dizzy, the confusion was so profound it felt like my heart was being torn apart, and even being forced into a deep sleep couldn't end it.

When I woke up, it was sunset again, red like vomit.

Yu Zou's clothes clung to his body, the collar torn open unconsciously. His eyes were stained with the red blood of the setting sun, beautiful yet decadent, foreshadowing the end of everything.

The brilliant sunset tinged from red to yellow. Yu Zou lit a cigarette, and the rising smoke divided the connected sunset into two parts.

It's exactly five o'clock.

He Honghan was about to leave work when she saw someone else registering on the screen. She clicked her tongue and put her white coat back on.

Along with the person entered came a strong pheromone. Upon seeing that it was Yu Zou, He Honghan became even more irritated. She raised her bracelet and yelled, "Do you have any public decency? Releasing pheromones like that!"

Yu Zou, contrary to his usual behavior, did not retort. He sat silently on the patient chair. Only then did He Honghan notice the bandage on his hand. Her playful smile faded, and she asked in a softer tone, "What's wrong?"

As Yu Zou opened his mouth, everything he had done in the past began to flash before his eyes, becoming clearer and clearer. Everything he had once enjoyed now seemed ridiculous.

It's ridiculous that he couldn't even bring himself to say it to He Honghan.

Yes, it was all about using each other from the start. It was a marriage of convenience, there was never any real affection between them. There were so many details, but he just overlooked them.

Yu Zou closed his eyes, placed his hand on his forehead, wiped away the moisture from under his eyelids with his ring finger, and smiled. This made He Honghan's heart pound even harder. She pulled her chair closer to him, squeezed his shoulder, and said even more cautiously, "You came here to tell me, didn't you?"

Yu Zou looked up, let out a breath, and said in a hoarse voice, "I'll stay at your house for a few days."

"Fine, you dig out the nest yourself." He Honghan took out her phone to check her duty roster. "I'll switch duty rosters with them tomorrow, and I'll have some free time the day after tomorrow. Let's have a drink."

Suddenly, He Honghan's phone rang. He was startled and held up the phone for Yu Zou to see the screen. Without answering, he mouthed to Yu Zou, "Your wife!"

Yu Zou said, "Answer the call and tell them I'm not here."

He Honghan looked at Yu Zou strangely and pressed the answer button: "Hello?"

"Is Yu Zou with you?"

"Not here. Why?"

"Yu Zou has disappeared, and I can't contact him."

"Not seeing you?" He Honghan feigned surprise, waiting for a reply, but then hung up. He checked his phone and asked, "Did you offend him? Is he after you?"

Yu Zou shook his head, gestured for He Honghan to be quiet, and dialed Du Pianjian's number back. It was answered in less than a second, and He Honghan held her breath and listened to the phone.

"My phone was on silent, I didn't hear it, what's wrong?"

"I saw the news and I was worried about you."

"Don't worry about me, I'll be staying at the company for a while." Yu Zou cleared his throat before continuing, "Take care of yourself."

"I'll go to the company to keep you company."

“No need!” Yu Zou refused decisively. The other party seemed about to speak, but was interrupted by his unusually firm attitude and fell silent. He deliberately softened his tone to explain, “The matter is not over yet. I am being closely watched. Your presence will only distract me.”

The other side remained silent, perhaps not believing Yu Zou's words at all, but he didn't want to say anything more. If he said another word, he might not be able to resist pushing back everything he had just heard and smashing everything to pieces.

"Do you have a cold?" Du Pianjian asked.

Yu Zou was slightly taken aback. The emotions he had managed to suppress surged up again. The defense he had painstakingly built was the worst kind of shoddy construction.

"Remember to see a doctor, remember to take your medicine," Du Pianjian said from the other end of the line, her gentle voice unchanged from before, meaning she was still acting. "Remember to go home."

"Mm," Yu Zou replied.

Both sides remained silent, waiting for the other to hang up.

He Honghan couldn't hold back any longer. She took the phone from Yu Zou and hung up, asking urgently, "What's wrong with you two?"

"It's nothing, it's just that he doesn't love me."

"Weren't you two so loving yesterday? Why don't you love each other anymore today?"

"It's not that he suddenly stopped loving me, it's just that I suddenly realized it."
