The Last Secret
In the bright light, He Can stood behind a chair, the veins on his forehead throbbing, squinting as he watched the monitor.
The guards who were originally on duty received orders to leave, and soon after, Yu Zou walked out on his own, disappearing into a blind spot of the surveillance cameras.
This was an escape orchestrated from within and without. Yu Zou went from being a witness and a victim to a gray figure whose stance was impossible to determine.
He directed the technicians to rewind the recording, pointed at the person on the screen, and said, "Interrogate this nurse closely about why she opened the window and whether she had accomplices."
Before leaving the ward, Yu Zou stood by the window for about a minute. Something below must have attracted his attention, prompting him to leave. In this cold weather, with no obvious markings on the window and no sound from inside, it was impossible to gamble on the possibility of being discovered.
It can only be a coordinated effort, with each side responding to the other.
The fact that Yu Zou disappeared into thin air after leaving the building further confirms this idea.
"Are you sure the surveillance footage hasn't been tampered with?"
"No, there is absolutely no trace of editing or modification."
"Expand the search area, review the surveillance footage again, and make sure to find Yu Zou."
He Can walked out, and Sang Pingqiu followed. The two returned to the ward. Wen Ke was collecting evidence from the scene, putting a hair into an evidence bag. His muffled voice came through his mask: "The window is open, and there are very few pheromones left in the room, so it cannot be used to determine whether he is the marker of Du Pianjian."
He Can walked over, picked up the evidence bag, looked at it, and asked, "Can we extract footprints from the path below the window?"
“It’s difficult. It requires more sophisticated instruments and specialized laboratory analysis, but I will try.”
He clicked his tongue inwardly.
Due to the importance attached to Chi Hengxun and the past cases related to addiction, the "Heavy Artillery Operation" targeting Xiangluo Island was about to be launched. However, at this critical juncture, Yu Zou disappeared.
Immediately, a thought struck him like a sledgehammer: Could it be that Yu Zou's existence has been discovered?
He subconsciously looked at Sang Pingqiu, who silently walked to the window and looked down.
A piece of boxwood was divided into equal-length squares by a street lamp. Four technicians were collecting evidence. He walked out of the ward without looking to the side, came to the street lamp, and looked up in the direction of Yu Zou's ward. Suddenly, He Can appeared in the window and looked this way.
Sang Pingqiu had a sudden inspiration and slowly adjusted his position. He Can's gaze followed his movements until Sang Pingqiu was standing under the street lamp again, beckoning to He Can to come down.
"What drew Yu Zou away was someone he knew. Visibility was poor at night, and he could only be seen clearly from this position. Moreover, the person had shown signs of leaving before he came down, which is why Yu Zou ran so fast in the ward."
This person was very familiar with the hospital's layout, which allowed them to control the timing and ensure Yu Zou could set off from a position where he could see and catch up.
Sang Pingqiu turned his head to look left and right, hesitated for a moment, and then walked to the right.
He Can followed up: "They must be the ones who were able to get rid of the guards and bribe the nurses."
"If so, it would be more convenient to kill someone with a drug to cover it up."
Behind the wooden pergola at the end was a secluded side door. He asked, "Tell them to check this area carefully."
Once you exit through the side door, you'll find yourself on a narrow alleyway, with crowded buildings on the other side.
He Can subconsciously glanced around, and a quick scan revealed three or four surveillance cameras near the streetlights and building corners. He pressed the intercom: "I don't believe the surveillance cameras here can be tampered with. This is He Can, the team leader. Technical unit, take note: southwest, outside the hospital side gate, prioritize retrieving the surveillance footage, proceed immediately!"
Fingers rise and fall on the keyboard on the screen, like raindrops falling on a calm lake.
The characters leaped wildly at an unprecedented speed, and three different data streams converged at the same point.
Yu Zou's face was illuminated by the blue light of the electronic lights, making him appear ghostly, while green characters swirled on the protective glasses on the bridge of his nose.
Shi Nao's forehead was beaded with sweat, and Tong Tangming withdrew his hand from the tissue.
He dared not disturb them rashly.
Shi Nao was covering Yu Zou as they navigated through an unfamiliar system. The firewall kept tracking their IPs. After safely passing one checkpoint, the two parted ways again. Smoke bombs were being thrown one after another, and if they weren't careful, their only chance would be lost.
"Yu Zou! Attention! Each screen only has three seconds." Shi Nao pressed the ENTER key, and a progress bar appeared on the screen.
Yu Zou spurred his long legs, sliding his chair to the nine screens in the center, where he stared intently. The nine long bars gradually filled in to the end, transforming from a black screen to a flickering mosaic.
They eventually merged into one, becoming a series of surveillance videos with largely similar white backgrounds.
Shi Nao guided the firewall to another location; the distance between them was only three seconds. The research institute was vast, with extensive surveillance, covering every corner impenetrably.
Yu Zou's heart temporarily shielded his emotions during the countdown, so when a complete hope was placed in front of him, he grasped it but still dared not completely relax.
Only after the last screen had passed did he say, "Coordinates LT-24."
Shi Nao's fingers moved across the screen without pause, inputting new commands, manipulating data to reach coordinate control and monitoring by mixing it with normal commands, and disguising herself within it.
In the pristine white room, several massive instruments were in operation. A woman dressed in a similarly pristine white lab coat stood in front of one of the experimental devices, her back to the monitor. The green flower on her low ponytail hair tie was the only color in the laboratory.
The dialog box appeared on Yu Zoumian's screen, the jumping vertical line beside his left eye, which was tilted back, like a black tear about to fall.
teacher.
The account sent a message.
In the surveillance footage, Ji Huisheng raised his wrist, and three seconds later, he tidied up all the equipment, turned on the coffee machine, leaned against the table, and dialed the number back.
Yu Zou's heart pounded. He answered the phone immediately, still worried about being discovered, and whispered, "Teacher."
Ji Huisheng didn't answer, but looked at the monitor, his eyes meeting Yu Zou's on the screen. Yu Zou couldn't accurately describe his feelings at that moment, but suddenly many people came to mind. Why was everyone doing so badly? The silver hairpin on his forehead gleamed brightly among his black hair, the surrounding color rusted, gray, thin, and dull—how could these words appear on Ji Huisheng's face?
The words I wanted to say were stuck in my throat; there was a lot of them, but none of them felt powerful.
You can only state the facts.
“I’ve handed the evidence over to the police. They’ll be there soon, and everyone will be rescued. Teacher, please hang in there. You’re an outstanding young scholar in the alliance, a student of ten academic achievements and one creative talent…”
But what Yu Zou was about to lose was not just the fact of someone's death, but the separation of a life and emotions. Ji Huisheng's indifference only amplified the pain of helplessness. She calmly opened the top bean hopper lid, poured in coffee beans, then took out the water tank, filled it with drinking water, and put it back. Every step was as meticulous as an experiment.
"Are you done talking?"
"It's over."
Ji Huisheng placed the cup on the tray, pressed the switch, and the coffee slowly dripped out. Taking advantage of this moment, she walked towards the monitor, brushed her hair aside with one hand, revealing a medical bandage on the back of her neck that didn't even completely cover the scar. Then she rolled up her sleeve, revealing her slightly trembling arm covered with dark purple patches.
"At least I can chat with you in the end, which is nice," Ji Huisheng said calmly, stepping back to the coffee machine. "I'm hopeless, and I don't want to live like this anymore."
Yu Zou only knew that they had used addictive substances to control Ji Huisheng, but he did not know that addiction would cause such symptoms. He instinctively began to deny it: "There is no hope. There must be a way, as long as we live."
As the last drop of coffee fell into the cup, Ji Huisheng picked it up and walked to the insulated box. After entering her fingerprint, the outer layer of the insulated box fell down, revealing a spindle-shaped mass of flesh in the green nutrient solution. The solution reflected Ji Huisheng's dark face. She pointed to it with the coffee cup, her gesture resembling a clinking of glasses, and said casually, "This is Chi Hengxun's gland. Do you want me to destroy it for you?"
Shock could no longer elevate Yu Zou's emotions, but Ji Huisheng relished it all: "I heard all your gossip here. Chi Hengxun is pursuing Du Pianjian, and Du Pianjian and Luo Zangrui are always seen together. If you knew this from beyond the grave, wouldn't you do something about it?"
"Chi Hengxun is dead."
“I know. An Alpha addiction experiment is underway here, and they're short of glands from higher Alphas for samples. He's just an unlucky bastard.”
Yu Zou suddenly realized, "Could it be that you, teacher, are also..."
Ji Huisheng let the steam from the coffee cup blur her face, her lips moving as she said, "I shouldn't blame Lili for not telling me. If it were such an experiment, I would also find it hard to talk about. They are clearly animals, yet they have feelings; feelings, yet not everyone has them. The existence of one life is to provide pleasure for another life—absurd and laughable."
A few drops of coffee spilled, scalding Ji Huisheng and bringing her back to her senses. She dazedly lowered her head and took a sip: "Of all these forbidden experiments, the only real experimental data is my own."
Yu Zou jumped up, staring at the screen in disbelief. Ji Huisheng had actually used himself as a test subject!
"The experiment will not end. As long as people still have the desire for life and for matching, such things will continue to happen. My sabotage is only slowing it down." When Ji Huisheng brought the technology there, the machine that Long created was infinitely magnified by her incorrect operation.
“Illegal and immoral acts cannot last.” Yu Zou regained his composure. “It is precisely because everyone cherishes their own life that we must stop it here. Teacher, don’t give up. With your abilities, you can definitely develop a drug to eliminate addiction.”
“I think so too.” Ji Huisheng’s lips curled up as if he were smiling. “So I’m the first set of failed experimental data. As for how to handle it, you can figure that out.”
Yu Zou's phone rang, and a message arrived with a familiar PDF attached.
"Let's just keep it as a secret between you and me." Ji Huisheng raised his glass to the monitor, then hung up the phone.
An hour later, He Can slowly straightened up, watching the black car speed away in the surveillance footage. The wrinkles between his brows slowly smoothed out, and the corners of his mouth involuntarily twitched upwards.
"Fenzi, help me contact the police station."
He Chan tossed the walkie-talkie to Sang Pingqiu, grabbed his cell phone, and left the room. Sang Pingqiu dialed the walkie-talkie, requesting the command center to contact the traffic police brigade based on the license plate number in the video to track down the vehicle.
After receiving a definite reply, He Can walked in and, holding Sang Pingqiu's hand, gave the order to the team: "Team One, assemble at the southwest gate of the Third Hospital."
"Arrest warrant".
"By the time it lands, the person will have already flown away." He Can put the walkie-talkie back in his pocket. "Just pretend you didn't hear it."
Sang Pingqiu knew that he had just gone out to engage in another illegal activity, and he couldn't refuse this good intention, so he simply said, "I will be truthful."
"I know."
