Chapter 38 Xu Weisheng, you're in big trouble!
Jian Zhen didn't ask him where he was taking her. She quickly gathered her documents and got into his car. As the car door locked, she suddenly blurted out a question that Xu Weisheng hadn't expected: "How much is the price per square meter here?"
Xu Weisheng pulled his finger away from the key, wiping the surface of the key, glanced at her sideways, then turned back without saying a word and continued to start the engine: "Why are you suddenly asking this?"
"One day I'll buy it." Jian Zhen rolled down the car window and watched the neighborhood gradually recede from view.
“This isn’t the best.” Xu Weisheng had read the article “Three Questions for Jian Zhen” and boldly teased her, “If Miss wants to buy something, of course she should buy the best.”
Jian Zhen snorted and didn't say anything—she was a fake young lady, while Xu was now a real young master. Without his father's restraint, the young master now had even greater control over his wealth, and probably couldn't understand human suffering anymore.
It was nearing the Qingming Festival, and it was raining a lot. Halfway there, a light drizzle started to fall from the sky, splashing into the car window. I couldn't hear it, but it still wet my face.
Jian Zhen suddenly asked in a hoarse voice, "Is the information about my father accurate?"
"It should be accurate."
She paused and then asked, "Where did you find out? Never mind, it's okay if you can't say, you don't have to tell me."
"Convenient." Xu Weisheng said softly, "Boss Hao, do you remember him?"
Jian Zhen frowned, recalling the man who had treated her to drinks north of North Island a long time ago, and hesitated, saying, "Him? He's not the bar owner..."
"It's just a part-time job."
Jian Zhen knew, of course, that was his side business. It would be a miracle if a bar of that kind didn't lose money. But his main business... she had a preconceived notion that Xu Weisheng's friends were all idle rich kids.
"So what exactly is his main job?"
"Oh... he asked me to keep this a secret from you for now."
Jian Zhen didn't press further, instead turning her attention to her father's situation: "Where is he now? Why did he go missing? Can you tell me?"
“I haven’t had time to find out the specifics yet, but he’s definitely alright and nothing serious will happen. Hao only told me that his family will be able to contact him in two or three days at most.” Xu Weisheng turned to look at her: “Are you worried about your father?”
This is obvious, but Jian Zhen was too lazy to say it.
Xu Weisheng then asked, "Do you understand him?"
Jian Zhen found it difficult to answer. She realized that before she left school, she had straightforward and definite answers to many seemingly profound questions, but now she couldn't give any answers.
"It's nothing." Xu Weisheng withdrew his interrogative stance, turned the steering wheel and drove into his own underground parking garage, shrugged easily and smiled, "Look at me, I don't even really understand myself."
"Where is this? Your home?" Jian Zhen looked at the unfamiliar basement.
"Miss Jian has finally shown some concern for herself." Xu Weisheng smiled as he parked the car.
Jian Zhen was speechless. She thought that if Xu Weisheng used the term "young lady" a few more times, she might really become desensitized to it.
“I didn’t bring anything.” Jian Zhen unbuckled her seatbelt and picked up the empty bag from the back seat.
Xu Weisheng said calmly, "Fortunately, you can buy anything with money."
Jian Zhen hesitated for a moment, then grabbed her bag and got out of the car with him, taking the elevator up.
This was her first time visiting the legendary CEO's residence, and she couldn't help but ask while still in the elevator: "Is this the legendary river-view penthouse?"
"So... right, it's just a house." The elevator doors opened, leading directly to the apartment through a corridor. One side of the corridor had a viewing platform, while the other side was decorated with paintings, ornaments, and green plants.
"Wow!" Jian Zhen had been trying to convince herself that she should hold back no matter what she saw, so as not to look like she had never seen the world before. But when she looked out from the observation deck, the Pearl River meandered like a ribbon, and the lights on both banks and the island in the middle of the river were all in sight. Anyone who came here would feel that the city was beneath their feet.
Xu Weisheng walked beside her, silently raising his hand and pushing a stilted, old-fashioned artificial rockery ornament further inside. He had wanted to throw it away for a long time but kept forgetting. He was determined to secretly throw it away when Jian Zhen wasn't looking these past two days. Jian Zhen had complained to him in the Quzhou cave that she hated the fake artistic taste of forcing a landscape, especially the kind of artificial rockery placed at home. This one in his house was a gift from the developer when the house was handed over. The developer's taste was terrible, and he couldn't take the blame for it for nothing.
"Come in." His front door was at the end of this corridor. Xu Weisheng opened the door and made an inviting gesture. Jian Zhen regained her composure and walked in with great poise.
"Would you like me to show you around?" Xu Weisheng asked, looking at the back of her head as she turned around.
"Or do you have a map for me?" Jian Zhen asked, turning around.
“Start from here.” Xu Weisheng replicated the route the real estate agent had taken when he viewed the house. He hadn’t changed the layout much since he moved in, so several rooms remained empty. One of them, he converted into a home theater, which was his favorite area.
Upon entering the home theater, Jian Zhen remarked, "This sound system must have cost a lot of money, right?"
"Oh?" Xu Weisheng smiled after a moment of surprise: "You have good taste. This sound system is worth half the price of this house."
"Do you usually review films here?" Jian Zhen walked in and took a look.
"I spend most of my time watching movies."
Jian Zhen casually asked, "When was the last time you looked at it?"
“A long time ago, I hadn’t been home for half a month.”
Jian Zhen then turned around and looked him over carefully from head to toe. Suddenly, as if remembering something, she asked, "You didn't come directly from the funeral—"
Xu Weisheng waved his hand: "No, the urn has already been buried. I came directly from the farewell ceremony." He was impatient with the endless farewell ceremony: "After receiving the close relatives, there was the board meeting, and after that, there were representatives of the partners. There were very few people who came to pay their respects. They were all here to exchange information. What's the use of a grand funeral hall? It's being used as a stock exchange. I really have to thank you. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have been able to find a reason to get away so quickly."
"Ha~" Jian Zhen forced a dry laugh.
"You can pick a room."
"Choose any one?"
"Of course, I've had it all cleaned."
Jian Zhen took a deep breath and sighed. It's good to be rich; she felt it now.
"Can I sleep in the master bedroom?"
"Then I'll move out for you to live in." With that, Xu Weisheng turned to go to the master bedroom to pack her luggage.
Jian Zhen laughed and pulled him back, "Just kidding, this room is fine with me." She casually pointed to a guest room.
Xu Weisheng: "Oh." Before he could even look down at his sleeve, Jian Zhen let go of his hand, took a half step back, and looked at him, saying, "Thank you."
"It's nothing." Xu Weisheng felt something was off, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it, so he made an excuse to go to the restroom to calm down.
Jian Zhen closed the guest room door, drew back the curtains, and sat on the bay window to think about what to do next. Xu Weisheng's appearance had pulled her out of the vortex, but if she wasn't clear-headed now, she might fall into an even deeper vortex.
After thinking for a long time, she finally made up her mind and decided to take the plunge.
Xu Weisheng received her message through several walls; Jian Zhen asked him how to fill in his home address.
"Do you want to buy something?"
"There are quite a few? Is it convenient to deliver them to your home?" Jian Zhen knew that some residential areas near her grandmother's house strictly prohibited unauthorized personnel from entering.
"Give me a list."
Jian Zhen thought about it and realized that she was not familiar with the shopping channels in the area, so she simply wrote down a list and sent it to Xu Weisheng, planning to pay according to the receipt amount later.
She hadn't expected Xu Weisheng to have planned this far ahead and taken the receipt beforehand. As she squatted on the ground in her bathrobe, searching for the missing receipt, Xu Weisheng tapped her on the head from behind.
Jian Zhen covered her head and turned around. Xu Weisheng, dressed in dark pajamas, was holding a CD in his hand and asked her, "Want to watch a movie?"
If it were any other movie, it wouldn't matter; Jian Zhen isn't the kind of person who would break his principles for the sake of audiovisual enjoyment. But what he's holding is EVA.
After a three-second internal struggle, Jian Zhen said, "Okay."
Xu Weisheng had expected this to happen. He first met Jian Zhen through an animated film, and at that time he had a vague feeling that sooner or later, Jian Zhen's name would appear on the big screen. However, this girl was even more naive and innocent than he imagined, and her pursuit of her career always came after her pursuit of her idol.
Fortunately, thanks to his persistent efforts, she has almost forgotten about Lin Sheng.
Jian Zhen's emotions came late. Once the novelty of the new environment wore off, her grievances about being slandered and betrayed surged up again, accompanied by guilt towards her family. As she fiddled with Xu Weisheng's projection equipment, she secretly wiped away tears.
"Why are you crying?" Xu Weisheng asked as he adjusted the position of the new seat.
"I really have to leave Qili." Jian Zhen didn't want to show her vulnerability, so she subconsciously lied. She felt that one lie wasn't enough, so she choked up and said the second one: "I think I may never see Lin Sheng again in my life."
Xu Weisheng loosened his grip, and the new seat bounced back to its original angle. He angrily slapped his forehead – "Serves you right for being so talkative!"
"What's wrong with you?" Jian Zhen heard the movement of the chair and, worried that he might have hurt his hand, turned around to look at him.
"Please help me!" Xu Weisheng sighed.
“Okay.” Jian Zhen readily agreed and ran over, squatting down to help him adjust. Just then, Xu Weisheng’s phone, which was lying on the carpet, lit up, showing a message from someone named Jasmine.
She is undoubtedly a woman, and it's not a work-related relationship.
One, two, three... the other party sent eight or nine messages in a row, most of them pictures.
Jian Zhen immediately felt her face burning; in an instant, the huge house no longer had a place for her to stay.
"You have news!" she reminded Xu Weisheng absentmindedly.
"Really?" Xu Weisheng picked up his phone, unlocked it, and smiled as he stared at the screen.
Jian Zhen was stunned when she saw him laughing so happily while replying to someone else's message. The question seemed to come out of her stomach: "Who is Jasmine?"
