Chapter 330 Treasure

Yang Qiaoqiao stared in shock at the dark doorway, then turned to look at Huo Beixiao, her eyes filled with disbelief.

The next moment, she quickly pressed the zodiac dragon statue that had been pulled out back into place.

The bookshelf instantly returned to its original position.

There are now more than just her and Huo Beixiao in the house; there are also construction workers.

If there really was something in the doorway that was just revealed, even though it's not that era anymore, it would still be a problem if someone discovered it.

Yang Qiaoqiao called Mr. Xia to inform him that they would not be going home for dinner that night.

She and Huo Beixiao ate something casually outside, and after the renovation team workers finished get off work, the two returned to the old house.

This time, it was Huo Beixiao who personally lifted the sculpture of the little dragon.

After the bookshelf was moved, the doorway behind it was revealed again.

"Honey, I'll go in first. You wait for me here."

Huo Beixiao, holding a candle in his hand, spoke to Yang Qiaoqiao.

The space behind this doorway is unknown in size. In such a long-term enclosed space, there is a high possibility of insufficient oxygen. Bringing a candle is advisable; once the candle goes out, you can quickly retreat.

It's safer than carrying a flashlight.

Yang Qiaoqiao nodded.

If she were alone now, she would go in with Huo Beixiao.

But she is currently pregnant with two children, and she would never risk their safety.

Huo Beixiao went in and came out shortly after.

His angular face still showed some excitement as he pulled Yang Qiaoqiao inside, saying, "Wife, come in with me."

Yang Qiaoqiao followed Huo Beixiao inside and was almost blinded by the light.

She looked at the things in front of her with some disbelief: boxes of large and small yellow croakers, boxes of antique jewelry, boxes of silver coins, and antique calligraphy and paintings.

They were all valuable treasures.

“This…” Yang Qiaoqiao looked at Huo Beixiao in even greater disbelief.

Wasn't my maternal grandfather a professor in the archaeology department of a university?

What's wrong?

Yang Qiaoqiao immediately wondered if these things were of dubious origin, or if her grandfather had embezzled funds by abusing his position during an archaeological mission.

If that's the case, and these things are discovered, it would be a real case of undermining socialism, a serious crime.

Although my maternal grandfather is no longer alive, there is no guarantee that such charges will not implicate his descendants.

"Brother Xiao, these things..."

Huo Beixiao could tell what she was worried about just by looking at her expression.

He raised his hand and gently rubbed the top of her head. "Wife, don't worry, your grandfather is the most upright person I can be. He would never do anything to betray the country."

"These things must have been passed down from my maternal grandparents."

It was only then that Yang Qiaoqiao realized that both her maternal grandparents and her ancestors were extraordinary.

My maternal grandfather's ancestors were officials for generations during the feudal era, and during the Republic of China period, my maternal grandfather held an important position in the Shanghai government.

It's not uncommon for families to accumulate good things over generations.

Although my maternal grandmother's family was not as prominent as my maternal grandfather's, they were well-known "red capitalists" in that era.

As members of the "red capitalist" family, my maternal grandmother's family had already donated all their public assets to the state long ago.

In those times, no matter how selfless one was, one would always keep some things to protect oneself.

They can no longer verify whether these things were left by their maternal grandfather's ancestors or their maternal grandmother's ancestors.

But the grandfather specifically instructed Xu's father to bring this house back and leave it to Huo Beixiao, presumably because he wanted to leave these things to Huo Beixiao as well.

Yang Qiaoqiao breathed a sigh of relief knowing that these things must have come from legitimate sources.

It was then that she noticed a box of books that looked particularly out of place among those treasures.

She walked over, picked up a book and flipped through it, only to find that all the books were handwritten.

Huo Beixiao took the book from her hands.

"This is my grandfather's handwriting," the man said in a deep voice, filled with longing for his loved ones.

After Huo Beixiao's emotions subsided, Yang Qiaoqiao asked, "Brother Xiao, what should we do with these things now?"

"I'll move this box of books out, and leave the rest here for now, when there's another opportunity..." Huo Beixiao said, glancing at Yang Qiaoqiao.

Yang Qiaoqiao roughly knew what the man was thinking; he was just asking for her opinion.

She continued, "When the opportunity arises in the future, I will hand it over to the country."

"Yes." Huo Beixiao nodded. "My wife understands me best."

The two looked at each other and laughed.

"I'll move this box of books out first," Huo Beixiao said. "I'll come and oversee the renovation every day from now on, and I won't let the renovation team do the work on the study side."

Meanwhile, in the northern part of the city, at the He family's residence.

The telephone rang in He Zhengguo's study.

Upon answering the phone, He Zhengguo immediately stood up excitedly, "Found it? Where is it?"

Then, listening to the other party's report, He Zhengguo's brows furrowed even more. "What? The house has already been returned to the Su family and inherited by his grandson, and it's being renovated again?"

After receiving a positive reply.

He Zhengguo instantly became angry, "What kind of work are you doing? That Su guy has been dead for so many years, and you only just found out about that house!"

"Sir, the house was really inconspicuous, and the person who handled the paperwork wasn't from the Su family. We made a mistake..."

He Zhengguo wasn't in the mood to listen to the explanation and asked, "Are you sure all the things left behind by the Su family and the Ye family are hidden in that house?"
