Shui Qinghua was giving instructions to his eldest son, Fan Jiang. Besides Fan Jiang, Fan He, Fan Hu, and Hu Wenhua also stood up.
"What are you going there for?" Hu's mother tugged at the hem of her son's clothes, signaling him not to follow.
This is his sister's village. It's not appropriate for his family to live here in the first place. If they wander around aimlessly, it might cause gossip for their daughter.
Hu Wenhua didn't think too much about it and said casually, "The road is slippery, I'll keep an eye on the younger ones."
Actually, it's because of the heavy rain and the work I've been doing these past two days that I've felt cooped up and really needed to go out for some fresh air.
His words, however, had the air of an elder.
Looking at her tall and strong son, Hu's mother thought it would be good for him to come along.
She added worriedly, "Don't cause trouble. After we finish our business, bring the kids back early."
The four of them agreed with a deafening roar, then disappeared in a flash.
Mother Hu shook her head and sighed helplessly, saying with concern, "She's about to get married, how come she's still like a child, so clueless?"
Shui Qing: .....I was still a child after all.
Fan Jin gently comforted her, "Wenhua just hasn't met the right person yet. Once she does, she'll understand. Mother, please don't worry."
Mother Hu loved hearing this, and excitedly asked, "So, are there any girls of marriageable age in your village? The same age as Wen Hua, no, even a little older is fine, as the saying goes, 'A woman three years older brings good fortune.'"
Fan Jin stared blankly at Shui Qing, his dark eyes filled with confusion and helplessness.
Having no other choice, Shuiqing stepped forward and asked with great experience, "Mother, how would he know?"
Mother Hu thought it made perfect sense; how could her son-in-law, a mere scholar, know such things!
He immediately smiled and asked Shui Qing, "You must know, and you also know that we've made some money from brewing wine. We certainly won't let that young lady suffer any injustice. As long as she's a good person and has good character, height or weight doesn't matter!"
Shui Qing: .....If you didn't know better, you'd think Wen Hua was too old to be found. As long as we find someone who wants him, that's fine.
"Mother, Wenhua is still young, there's plenty of time for her to choose."
"You're not young anymore, you're already sixteen. Half the year has passed, and you'll be seventeen in a few months. If you don't find a good match this year, you can find one next year, then make an engagement, pick a date, and get married. Who knows how old you'll be then!"
"Once a man is over eighteen, he's considered old. Good young girls are already betrothed, so what will he have to choose from then on?" Mother Hu counted on her fingers as she spoke, growing more and more worried.
Butcher Hu also looked somewhat worried.
Shui Qing opened her mouth, as if to say, "Can age be calculated like this?"
The tea room was quiet for a while.
Shui Qing then looked at Yan Qiuxing and his two brothers in the corner.
The three sisters are figuring out how to cook something delicious.
Xinghui said to Zhaodi with pride and joy, "My mother's braised pork is even better than the best chef in the city!"
Fan Zhaodi nodded emphatically without the slightest hesitation: "Auntie's cooking is the best!"
"We should learn too, so that we can cook even better than the chefs in restaurants in the future."
"We must learn!"
Mrs. Hu watched the girls discussing cooking with a smile, finding it quite enjoyable.
“After we learn, we can become cooks and earn quite a bit each month, maybe even more than a head chef in a restaurant!” Xinghui continued.
Fan Zhaodi quickly adapted and added, "Being a cook can earn money, which is even better."
Mrs. Hu exclaimed in surprise, blinking her eyes. Why were these two children different from what she had imagined?
Is learning to cook not to cook for your family, but to make money?
Is it appropriate for a girl to be a cook?
"No, you two can't think like that." Yan Qiu, with the demeanor of an elder sister, stopped her two younger sisters.
Mrs. Hu breathed a sigh of relief.
