It's all his fault for having such filthy thoughts. He originally intended to tell Jiajia to say that it was a gift from his sister and to wear it normally in her hair. However, he was afraid that she would be found out and run away in a disheveled state, which put Jiajia in a dilemma.
Did Aunt Ding and Uncle Ding talk about her last night?
Could it be that Jiajia and he were having an affair?
Thinking of this possibility, Hu Wenhua panicked and wished he could see Jiajia immediately. She didn't come; only Uncle Ding came. Was he scolded and punished last night?
It's all his fault! Why can't he control his body?
Ding Heli waved his hand, not continuing on the topic, and asked the main purpose of his visit: "Your Aunt Ding and I—uh, answer me honestly—was the silver hairpin a token of love? Did you and Jiajia have one?"
Ding Heli paused, considering his next words, feeling somewhat uncomfortable having his father inquire about these matters.
But Yi Lin is a woman, so it's fine for her to ask Sister Hu and Shui Qing, but she can't very well ask Wen Hua. And this matter has to be investigated quietly so as not to disturb those two. Jia Jia is even more unsuitable. If the two of them really have feelings for each other later, they have to avoid suspicion.
But how should I put it?
Hu Wenhua's heart tightened when he saw Ding Heli stop halfway through his sentence.
He looked at Ding Heli and stated truthfully: "It was not a token of love, and Jiajia and I did not do anything out of line. I should not have done it yesterday, I was rash!"
Please, Uncle Ding, don't blame Jiajia. I overheard Jiajia mentioning wanting a new hairpin, and yesterday when I went to town, I saw one that I liked and bought it for her. It was just a simple thought and I didn't do anything right. Uncle Ding, this has nothing to do with Jiajia."
His original intention was to buy her a hairpin; he wanted to give her something she wanted, and he wanted to give her the money he earned.
Ding Heli's heart sank.
Undeterred, he pressed on, "Really?" He already knew in his heart that what Hu Wenhua said was true!
He wasn't lying. People rarely dare to look you in the eye when they're lying, but Hu Wenhua looked at him and said that he was always so sincere. He had just overheard Jiajia wanting a new hairpin and happened to have some money, so he bought it for her.
"Yes, that's exactly what I think," Hu Wenhua said affirmatively.
He never intended for a silver hairpin to be a token of their love; he was only thinking of buying her something, and he never intended for anyone to know that he was the one who bought it.
Ding Heli pursed his lips, wanting to sigh but holding back.
What a mess this is! Luckily, he came over to ask first, otherwise it would have been awkward for the two families to meet in the future!
Hu Wenhua took two steps forward, then asked again, still worried, "Where's Jiajia? Can I go see her?"
He wanted to see her and desperately wanted to know if she was alright.
Ding Heli thought that since his home was in a village with many people watching, it would be inconvenient. He sighed and said, "It would be better to have her come to you later and explain things to her in person."
It's much more convenient here since it's far from the village.
Hu Wenhua was overjoyed but dared not show it. He escorted Uncle Ding, who was hanging his head, to the bottom of the hill and then stood there waiting for the person he had been longing for day and night to come.
Ding Heli entered the house with a sigh, and when he met Yilin who was looking forward to him, he sighed: "We were wrong. It's not a love token. It's just that the child heard that Jiajia wanted a new hairpin and brought it back to her yesterday."
Qin Yilin felt that the news brought back by her husband was both unexpected and reasonable.
"This child is too honest! How could we give away something so valuable just because Jiajia said she wanted it? No, we have to return it."
Ding Heli thought so too, "Since it's not what we meant, it's best to return it."
The two looked into the inner room.
Ding Jiajia, who was in the inner room, carefully wrapped up the silver hairpin with the auspicious cloud pattern and came out.
"Father, Mother, I'm going to return the hairpin."
