Chapter 101: The Third Brigade

Bai Yongjun, who was standing opposite, came out shouting for steamed buns. Perhaps he swallowed them too hastily, and his face flushed for a while before he recovered. "Why are you in such a hurry? Didn't you just get back?"

The three Guanchuan brothers and Luo Yue and the others also had food hanging from their lips. The sound of the clappers outside was still deafening, and along with it, Uncle Du from next door shouted, "Come out quickly! Let's go to the square for a meeting. Every household must send a representative."

As soon as these words were spoken, everyone's eyes fell on Guan Chuan, because he was the boss of the educated youth site.

Guan Chuan, who hadn't had his meal yet, twitched his mouth. He scratched his head and sighed in distress, "I shouldn't have been the boss. Forget it, you guys take a rest first, I'll go take a look."

Yu Chunxiao, who came a step behind, immediately went up to Du Jiang and said, "Then I'll trouble you, Brother Guan," and then he smiled at Guan Chuan. Seeing that everyone present looked as if they were going but he didn't, Guan Chuan walked out with his shoulders drooped resignedly.

"Well, let's go back and eat first." A gust of cold wind blew, and He Jiefang shivered. He quickly pulled Qian Meili back into the house.

Seeing that the couple had gone back, the others looked at each other and went back to their rooms. Yu Chunxiao had finished her meal and did not go back immediately. She followed Du Jiang directly to her room.

In a room, Du Jiang poured herself a glass of water without any politeness and nestled on the edge of the bed. "Sister Jiang, you said we would get together with the water."

"I guess the households in our area must be together, but I don't know about the others." Du Jiang recalled the alleys and lanes in the village uncertainly.

"That's true. If we divide them by alley, we'll definitely be grouped together," Yu Chunxiao nodded in agreement. "Auntie Du's family, our educated youth camp, then Dachuan and his five brothers, plus Brother Huo, that's about eight or nine families in total. I just don't know if the two alleys closest to us can be divided into them. If so, we'll have enough people."

"It's very likely that they'll be together. This way, each group will be able to compete with each other, and I guess there won't be any cheating in the future," Du Jiang guessed. "Of course, this is just my wild guess. It really depends on the village chief. As for you, you really don't plan to go to town. Your parents are there, so finding a temporary job shouldn't be a problem."

Yu Chunxiao smiled bitterly and shook her head, "Sister Jiang, you don't know my family's situation." Perhaps it was because Du Jiang's eyes were too warm that Yu Chunxiao wanted to confide in him, "Actually, I'm not my parents' biological child. They adopted me after they got married and couldn't have children. Who knew that I would get pregnant with Chunyue every two years? Although my mother has always been critical of me since then, my father has been really good to me and has never neglected me just because I'm not his biological child."

Du Jiang's face looked a little strange when she heard that. Seeing this, Yu Chunxiao smiled and said, "Sister Jiang, don't think too much. I volunteered to go to the countryside. My mother is just a talker, but she gave me everything she deserved. She's no better than that. When the neighborhood committee notified us to go to the countryside, one of our two children had to go. Instead of Chunyue going without going, I took the initiative." She shrugged and continued, "I expressed my opinion at the time. My father didn't persuade me and gave me all the subsidies for going to the countryside. My mother didn't let me suffer any loss. Chunyue has always been quite dissatisfied with this."

"No wonder," Du Jiang suddenly realized, "Chunyue has been sarcastic all the time, so this is why. But your parents are nice people."

"Yeah," Yu Chunxiao said slowly, blowing the hot water in the cup with her head down. "Maybe it's because we're farther apart, but Chunyue and my mom's relationship is getting better and better. It's actually quite good this way. Chunyue used to say she was partial, but now she's not. It's just... I always feel like my mom listens to Chunyue now. Whatever she says is the truth, and my dad's words don't work. This move is just like that. It's not that it's bad, but the town is quite far from the school. I don't know what Chunyue thinks."

Uh, thinking back on Yu Chunyue's actions, Du Jiang touched his chin uncertainly, "Does your sister think she can't find a good partner in the village?"

Huh? Yu Chunxiao's mouth opened wide and he stammered, "No way, Chunyue is only a little old."

But Du Jiang's eyes didn't seem to be joking. Yu Chunxiao was dumbfounded. Thinking back to when his sister had just come to dinner and inquired about the male educated youth present, he felt bad. "No, Chunyue is only a little old, why would she think about this?"

Du Jiang shrugged and said, "I think you should ask your father when you have time. I don't think Uncle Yu is the kind of boss who doesn't care about family affairs. As for Aunt, you'd better not say anything for now, so as to avoid confusion."

Yu Chunxiao nodded in agreement with Du Jiang's words. Perhaps she was shocked, but she was still a little dazed. She couldn't reconcile the sweet but well-behaved girl she was before leaving with the image of someone being forced into marriage. "Could it be that something happened after I left home? That shouldn't be the case. My mother shouldn't have kept it from me."

Du Jiang didn't think so. "You said your mother obeys Chunyue's every word. You should ask your father." Du Jiang advised kindly, fearing that Yu Chunxiao might accidentally confront Aunt Yu directly. Du Jiang didn't dare to think about that scene. He guessed that if things went wrong, the relationship between the mother and daughter would be over.

Du Jiang stopped talking after she finished speaking. After all, it was someone else's family affair, and it would not be good for her to always get involved. Seeing Yu Chunxiao's absent-minded look, Du Jiang did not disturb her. After adding some water for her, she sat down on the edge of the bed and picked up the book under the pillow to read.

Time passed while he was sitting in silence. When the gate of the courtyard was pushed open from the outside, it was already three o'clock in the afternoon. Guan Chuan, who had been hungry for the whole afternoon, finally returned home. Perhaps because the meeting lasted too long, Guan Chuan felt weak all over. Fortunately, he did not forget his task. He immediately handed the note about grouping to He Jiefang and ran into the house to fill his stomach.
