Chapter 76: Put Yourself in Others’ Shoes

As evening approached, snow began to fall again in Dujia Village.

Looking at the ground covered with snow again, Du Jiang was still lying on the bed reading the textbook, and she had just torn off a page from her Shoubai Nian calendar.

"Auspicious snow indicates a good harvest. I hope the crops in the fields will get better and better next year." Perhaps it was because the white flour at noon was so smooth and sweet. Now when Du Jiang thinks back on it, she still feels the lingering fragrance on her lips and teeth, and feels a little unsatisfied. Unfortunately, such white flour is a bit of a luxury for her.

The next second, Du Jiang slapped his forehead. How could a man with huge sums of money become so stingy? Du Jiang couldn't understand it. He slapped his head in annoyance and put the matter behind him. He continued to lie by the window and admire the snow outside.

The sound of raindrops falling and pattering is so lively.

"Sister Jiang," Yu Chunxiao knocked on the door. Du Jiang hurriedly got up to open the door.

As soon as the door was opened, the cold wind blew in through the crack, carrying small snowflakes floating on the ground. Du Jiang quickly pulled Yu Chunxiao over and quickly closed the door.

"Why are you here?" Du Jiang quickly poured a glass of water and handed it to Yu Chunxiao, looking at her blue lips. "Is there something urgent?"

"I'm going to the pigsty, Sister Jiang," Yu Chunxiao sipped the hot water, feeling the heat flow through her mouth and into her internal organs, warming her whole body. "That guy named Huo Ze is shivering from the cold on the hard bed in the pigsty. The single layer of clothing Brother Xu gave him is completely useless. We haven't added firewood to the pigsty since we slaughtered the pigs, and there's not much left now. I'm afraid it won't be enough for one night." Yu Chunxiao sighed. "I don't know if it's because I feel pity for that guy or if I'm thinking of my own teacher, Sister Jiang, but I... I feel a little uneasy."

"Alas, it's such a cold night. I'm afraid that thin clothes won't last long. Has the village chief returned?"

Yu Chunxiao shook his head. "I just knocked on the door, and it was Sister Yingying who answered. She said she had gone out this morning and hadn't come back since. I guess Hu Zi's condition isn't good. Uncle Du was also called to town this afternoon."

"Uncle Du has also gone over," Du Jiang frowned, "What did Aunt Cui say?"

"No, Aunt Cui didn't show up in the house, but I saw smoke coming out of the kitchen, so I guess she's cooking," Yu Chunxiao repeated his speculation. Perhaps they were all outsiders. Yu Chunxiao put himself in Huo Ze's shoes and imagined what it would be like if it were him. Suddenly, he felt a chill. "The rest of the village only watched when the cowshed collapsed this morning. They didn't even show their faces. If they were allowed to do that, it would be difficult. Not to mention Uncle Du said that the thing was pointed out by the educated youth, so it's probably even more impossible for him to do it."

"Well, what do you think?"

"Jiang Jie, to be honest," Yu Chunxiao continued with a wry smile, "My parents are both teachers at the school, so I really sympathize with that person." As she said this, Yu Chunxiao looked at Du Jiang anxiously, fearing that the other person would reveal a look of contempt and disgust on her face. Fortunately, Du Jiang's expression was very calm, which finally put Yu Chunxiao's mind at ease. "Judging from the age of that person, he must be in his thirties, curled up and skinny. I... my heart... sigh..."

"Put yourself in my shoes," Du Jiang pursed his lips and turned back to search in the closet. He then took out an old cotton-padded jacket from the bottom. The black coarse cotton-padded jacket was unisex, and because it was made to fit clothes inside, it was very loose. Du Jiang recalled Huo Ze's figure that he had seen in the morning, estimated it, and then rolled up the cotton-padded jacket and tucked it under his arm. Then he called Yu Chunxiao to carry a bundle of firewood from the firewood pile in the corner of the wall. "Let's go, be quiet."

Perhaps because of the snow, the other people in the yard arrived early. Looking at the gray sky covered with white snow, Du Jiang and Yu Chunxiao walked towards the pig house one after the other, one step deep and one step shallow.

When they got closer, they noticed that there were two more footsteps at the door. Looking at the footsteps, one big and one small, that had not yet been covered by the snow, Du Jiang and Yu Chunxiao looked at each other and tiptoed over.

"Huo Yang, thank you," a hoarse and deep voice sounded in the house. Perhaps because they were so cold, Du Jiang and Yu Chunxiao could still hear each other's teeth chattering.

"You've caught a cold and been frozen for such a long time. I'm afraid you won't be able to work for a while. Fortunately, there is not much farm work in the village before the New Year. You can bring the cow into the house. This will be good for both you and the cow." Old Mrs. Huo's voice rang out in the house. Hearing the voice, Du Jiang stomped his feet.

"Who?" Huo Yang's eyes flashed, and he stood up and walked over quickly. At the same time, Old Mrs. Huo and Huo Ze looked at each other, trying to recall whether they had said anything inappropriate just now.

"Brother Huo, it's me and Chunxiao." A gust of cold wind blew, and Du Jiang shivered again, and Yu Chunxiao was no less so.

As Huo Yang opened the door, the two of them hurried in. As soon as they entered the house, they stomped their feet to leave the snow on their shoes at the door before walking in.

Huo Yang closed the door and followed the two of them. Looking at the cotton coat under Du Jiang's armpits and the firewood in Yu Chunxiao's arms, he understood.

"Grandma Huo," Du Jiang greeted the old lady Huo who was sitting on the bench taking her pulse, then walked over and placed the cotton coat under her arm in front of Huo Ze, "This is a cotton coat, the style is more men's, you can try it, but it's a bit old and may be disliked."

Huo Ze looked at the cotton-padded jacket beside him, then at Du Jiang. Without saying a word, he silently reached out and put the jacket on. Although it was old, the chill in his bones was somewhat relieved after he put it on. Huo Ze touched the patch on his chest and whispered a thank you, "Thank you. I wonder what your name is, comrade."

"My name is Du Jiang, and I'm an educated youth at the educated youth center," Du Jiang said before stepping back. Yu Chunxiao stepped forward and placed the firewood in her arms beside the bed. "My name is Yu Chunxiao, and I'm an educated youth like Sister Jiang. I got this from Sister Jiang. You can use it to light the night."

Touching his cotton coat and looking at the firewood on the ground, Huo Ze didn't know what to say for a moment. He could only lower his head and thank the door repeatedly, "Thank you, thank you."

"You're welcome," Du Jiang said in a cold and hard tone, pulling Yu Chunxiao back, and stopped only when they were behind Old Lady Huo. He looked back at the stove and pots used to cook pig food, which obviously didn't look like they had ever been cooked. He guessed that this person probably hadn't eaten since morning, and he suddenly felt a little troubled.

"Why are you here?" Huo Yang turned his head and glanced at Du Jiang. "Didn't Uncle Du ask Xu Zhizhou to be in charge?"

Hearing this, Du Jiang didn't know what to say. She and Yu Chunxiao looked at each other and changed the subject, "Brother Huo, why are you here? Are you off work today?"
