Chapter 182 I Don’t Want to Make Her Sad
Chen Qing was just next to the bed when the man approached silently.
"Why did you get up?" Jiang Jingyan lowered his eyes and looked at him.
"You weren't here, so I went to look for you."
He hugged the person to his chest, his voice involuntarily gentle, "Talking about business with Lian Zhuo."
Chen Qing nodded.
"Have you been standing here for a long time?"
She shook her head and burrowed sleepily into his shoulder. "Seeing you brought me back."
Jiang Jingyan patted her back lightly, and after a while, his breathing became heavier.
It seems that he didn't hear anything.
He put one hand behind his head, feeling complicated.
When the Chen family got into trouble, Chen Qing was still young and knew even less about the case than he did. He had been displaced during that period, and he didn't want to bring up the past and make her sad until the case was thoroughly investigated.
During his time at the grassroots level, Jiang Jingyan provided disaster relief and the poor, rushing to the front lines to save lives. He witnessed much human suffering, shattered families, earth-shattering changes, pairs of eyes filled with tears, and scenes of purgatory. Several young recruits even became obsessed with their own lives and received long periods of psychological counseling in the army. He could withstand the turmoil that stirred within him, but Chen Qing alone was the only one he could not recall. Her past, the suffering she had endured, was a source of heartache.
Jiang Jingyan lay there for a while, making sure Chen Qing was asleep, then tiptoed to get up.
As soon as I went out, I met Jiang Zhongyi coming down the stairs dressed neatly.
"You stayed yesterday?" he joked. "I thought I was going to be a child from a single-parent family."
Jiang Zhongyi raised his briefcase and slapped him on the shoulder, pointing to the other end of the corridor. "Your mother arranged for Chen Qing to stay in the dormitory, and you're throwing a tantrum again."
"Why does my fiancée live in the guest bedroom?"
"That won't do! It doesn't matter if you're a man, but if a girl's reputation is ruined, it will be a lifelong problem!"
Jiang Jingyan evaded the question with an "hmm".
Jiang Zhongyi glanced over and asked as he walked, "Who did your mother go out to see yesterday?"
"Wei family."
He sighed, "Director Wei is a practical man with a kind heart. He resigned because he felt ashamed to face the Jiang family because of his sister's incident."
Jiang Jingyan paused, "Do you need me to arrange it?"
"Giving him a little help will be a good reward for his hard work over the years. Don't make it too obvious."
"Know."
"When will you return to Washington?"
“Almost.”
Before Vice President Kong's accounts were settled, Jiang Jingyan suspended all his duties. In order to prevent chaos within Huasheng, the higher-ups suppressed the news and found other excuses. He was happy to have some free time, accompany Chen Qing, and wait for the restless people in the group to surface.
Jiang Zhongyi got into the car, opened the window, and said solemnly, "The Tang family has been in turmoil recently. Young Master Xiao has a child outside, and he's forcing the old man to agree to take that girl in. I have no problem with Chen Qing, but I don't approve of this low-brow approach. You should know your limits. Don't challenge your mother's bottom line on this matter. Otherwise, Chen Qing will be criticized at home and his reputation will be in tatters."
Jiang Jingyan put his hands in his pockets and said nothing. "When my mother introduced Tao Siran to me, she was eager for me to get married with a child. But when it comes to Chen Qing, she's starting to be cautious?"
He didn't necessarily want Chen Qing to get pregnant at this time. Mrs. Luo took care of the association, and she herself also valued this opportunity. She would consider having a child only after she entered the association and became stable. He was just dissatisfied with Mrs. Jiang's attitude.
Jiang Zhongyi understood what he meant. He was silent for a while, then waved his hand and said, "As long as you are sure."
The driver drove out of Jiang's house.
Jiang Jingyan returned to the living room and dialed the Tang family's number.
Last time, Tang Xiaoming had no choice but to ask the Tang family to send bodyguards to guard the villa, which exposed He Youmeng's whereabouts. He was busy dealing with the matters at the Sihanoukville Wharf and didn't bother to ask how it could have become such a big deal.
When the phone was connected, the servant said that Old Master Tang was very angry. He broke three sticks, put Tang Xiaoming in solitary confinement, cut off all external contacts, and ordered him to reflect on himself and leave when he realized his mistakes.
Jiang Jingyan asked the servant to pass on the message, comforting Tang Xiaoming to stay alive.
He didn't know whether it worked or not.
Old Master Tang clearly does not allow Tang Xiaoming to decide his marriage freely. If he is forced into a corner, he will completely eradicate the hidden dangers. By then, everything will be gone.
As soon as I hung up the phone, Mrs. Jiang came downstairs and asked indifferently, "Your alma mater is having its anniversary celebration next week. Will you bring Chen Qing to attend?"
Jiang Jingyan looked at her and said, "Bring it."
"I'm going too." She said expressionlessly, "Let her follow me."
Jiang Jingyan frowned, his eyes searching.
Mrs. Jiang took the teacup handed to her by Sister Mei, sat down and glared at him, "Are you guarding against thieves? I'm not a cannibal. You have social engagements and speeches to make, so if she follows me, you won't have to worry."
Jiang Jingyan didn't respond and stood up. "Are you sure you haven't seen Director Yan?"
"Are you done?" Mrs. Jiang's temper flared up. "Don't meddle in our affairs. If you say you won't see me, then I won't see you."
"It's very likely that this will be the last time we meet. Don't you want to ask for clarification on some things?"
She said nothing.
Jiang Jingyan stopped talking and went upstairs.
…
The school anniversary coincided with the start of Chen Qing’s school year.
She reported to school one day in advance, packed up her dormitory, and met Yuan Hui.
"Am I tanned?" Yuan Hui looked around in the mirror. "A little tan is good, it's healthy."
Chen Qing made the bed and stepped down the ladder. "I didn't feel that dark, but I did feel fatter. You were too thin, and this is just right now."
Yuan Hui was unprecedentedly quiet.
She felt strange and walked over, "Are you worried about something?"
Yuan Hui faced the dressing mirror sideways, stroking her belly with her hand, smiling gently, her eyes full of joy.
Chen Qingyi jumped and pulled her, "Are you pregnant?"
"Keep your voice down, it's only been over a month..."
"What did your boyfriend say?"
Yuan Hui rolled up her skirt and said, "Let's get the marriage certificate first, and then have the wedding three months later."
Chen Qingsong was angry, at least the boy was responsible.
She had heard of some precedents at school where the boyfriends were young and only wanted a momentary pleasure with no plans for the future. Once they got pregnant, they disappeared immediately, leaving the girls both physically and sadly hurt.
"More than a month..." Chen Qing counted on his fingers and frowned, "You were pregnant when you went to the villa to pick me up? Fortunately, nothing happened at that time, otherwise I would have committed a serious crime."
Yuan Hui curled her lips nonchalantly, "My child is very tough. I've been surfing and clubbing lately, and he's still fine."
"Is morning sickness severe? Why not postpone the welcome party?"
"I'm not that squeamish—" Yuan Hui dragged out her tone and leaned closer. "I haven't interrogated you yet, Mr. Jiang. What's going on?"
Chen Qing turned around and wiped the table, "That's it..."
"Stop being vague. From the beginning, it wasn't Mr. Yan, it was Mr. Jiang?"
"Um."
Yuan Hui applauded, "You're amazing! No wonder Mr. Yan takes care of you so much. It turns out it's all for his junior fellow apprentice!"
Chen Qing didn't want to mention Yan Baiqing, so he changed the subject and said, "I won't be in school tomorrow. Can you do it alone?"
"When I went to the hospital, they made a big fuss and insisted on another checkup, fearing something might be wrong with their grandson."
The two of them went downstairs together to ask for leave. Classes hadn't started yet, but because they had to rehearse for the welcome party, they had to tell the teacher the reason for their absence.
There were many students returning to school, and Chen Qing was sweating from nervousness as he tried to protect Yuan Hui from being bumped into.
In early autumn, the temperature is cool in the morning and evening, but high at noon. She went out in the morning wearing a sweater and felt restless and irritable due to the heat.
Just as I took it off, a group of people came out of the Academic Affairs Building.
The leading man stopped and said, "Qing'er."
