First Encounter
The following afternoon, Jiang Yanmu was writing a book in front of her computer. Completely clueless, she was searching for inspiration.
I opened WeChat and accidentally clicked on Ye Ziyi's WeChat account. I saw his latest post on Moments, which read:
"I actually have someone I like."
I don't know when, but tears started falling onto the screen. My trembling hand gripped the phone tightly, my fingers moving nonstop, wiping but never quite stopping.
--remember
September 1, 2019.
That year was in the height of summer, and it was also the time we first met.
The gears of fate are turning.
My first meeting with him didn't turn out like something out of a novel...
The male and female protagonists become classmates, or sit in front of or behind each other.
But he and I only ended up sitting diagonally behind each other. Maybe I was thinking that sitting diagonally behind each other was pretty good, since we were so close... If only we could really be that close, but unfortunately I don't have the same good fortune as the heroine in a novel.
The desk diagonally behind me wasn't just an arm's length away; it was two groups of students behind me.
——
At that time, I was entering the second year of junior high school when he transferred to my class. The class was filled with unfamiliar classmates, and I didn't know anyone around me...
I still remember it very clearly.
He was wearing a white T-shirt, long black casual trousers, and blue canvas shoes, and appeared at the classroom door with a crossbody bag.
A ray of sunlight happened to fall on him, dazzling him. Its dazzling light made my life completely different.
In the scene, everyone introduced themselves in turn. When it was his turn, he said his name was "Ye Ziyi".
I don't know why, but when I heard his name, I couldn't help but put down the book in front of me and look up at him.
The moment I saw him, I realized that he had more than just a nice-sounding name.
Even his appearance was striking; it was impossible not to look at him more. I stared at him for a long time, and suddenly I felt like I was acting a bit like a pervert, staring at someone like that…
Before I met him, someone asked me if I believed in love at first sight. At first, my answer was that I didn't believe in such a thing, but then I met him...
Ye Ziyi
I believed it.
I don't know why, maybe it's because he is Ye Ziyi.
Every day since I fell in love with him, I would secretly watch him.
During class, I would glance at him when the teacher wasn't looking; after class, I would watch him chat with his friends; in the cafeteria, I would watch him eat right in front of me; and on the playground, I would secretly watch him.
We can only do it secretly.
——
Many pedestrians walked past in the corridor outside the window. Bored, I turned my head. I rested my chin on my hand, twirling my pen. I stole a glance at the boy in front of me.
The boy casually buried his face in his arms, the sunlight from the window bathing him in a beautiful glow.
Lost in thought, Jiang Yanmu didn't even notice when the pen in her hand fell to her feet. The moment of tranquility was broken by the ringing of the bell. Fu Yanjin, who was beside her, ran over and patted Jiang Yanmu on the shoulder.
Still in a daze, she was temporarily awakened from her sweet dream by the force of the slap.
A moment later, it fell into a trance again.
"Class has started, and you're still daydreaming?" Sitting in her seat, flipping through the books on her desk, Jiang Yanmu, still gazing at the person she liked, absentmindedly answered Fu Yanjin, "Mmm."
"Hmm?" Seeing Jiang Yanmu looking absent-minded, he switched to gossip mode and started asking her questions.
She leaned forward and shook Jiang Yanmu's arm, asking with great joy, "Hey, Jiang Xiaoyan. What's wrong? Tell me about it."
The shaking arm completely pulled the shy girl, whose attention was on Ye Ziyi, back to reality. She turned around to look at Fu Yanjin, who was full of gossip.
Feeling guilty, she tried to distract herself, not even noticing that the book in her hand had fallen over. "It's nothing, the teacher's coming." It was Fu Yanjin who noticed, teasing Jiang Yanmu, "Oh~ nothing~ then why did the book fall over?"
After hurriedly arranging the book, a blush quickly spread to the base of her ears.
Turn to the side and pretend nothing happened.
Touching her burning ears, she watched him listen to the lecture. Touching her ears, the heat at the base of her ears didn't lessen; instead, it became even hotter.
A gossipy girl leaned close to Jiang Yanmu, whispering in her ear and glancing in the direction she was looking. Ye Ziyi, noticing they were only two seats apart, exclaimed, "Oh my, our little Jiang Yanmu is falling in love for the first time!"
The girl's thoughts were exposed.
The shy girl blushed again. She hurriedly denied her feelings.
Their commotion reached the teacher's ears. "What are you doing?! Do you know it all already?" The teacher angrily slammed the blackboard eraser on the desk.
She tugged at Fu Yanjin's sleeve, cautiously lowering her head and whispering, "Stop talking, just focus on the lesson."
"Alright, alright, I won't say anymore, Jiang Xiaoyan~" she said with a meaningful smile.
After saying that.
Her eyes shifted back to Ye Ziyi until the bell rang. Only when Fu Yanjin dragged her to the cafeteria to queue did she finally look away from him for a moment.
Meeting in the cafeteria made my heart flutter again.
This time, we were only an arm's length apart, so very close. I thought we'd get our food at the same time, but we were so close. It's a pity we were so close, just a tiny bit short, and I could have gotten together with him.
After finishing my meal, I followed the path he had taken back to the classroom. He looked back at me, but I didn't dare look. I shifted my attention to Fu Yanjin and started chatting, afraid of being discovered.
Fu Yanjin kept telling the funny things that happened today. "Hey, you know what? That girl from the next class, she was dating three guys at the same time." She was stuffing potato chips in her mouth as she talked with great relish.
After talking for a while, he realized that Jiang Yanmu's mind wasn't on him. He nudged the absent-minded Jiang Yanmu with his shoulder, but unexpectedly, the bump knocked her to the ground, making quite a noise.
She plopped down on the ground, which stung. But her focus wasn't on whether she was hurt or not; rather, she was worried that he would see her disheveled state.
The more he thought about it, the more embarrassed he felt. He kept his head down, brushing the dust off his hands, lost in the scene that had just unfolded. Looking at Jiang Yanmu on the ground, Fu Yanjin seemed flustered.
He quickly stood up, walked to her side, squatted down, and helped her up.
Letting Fu Yanjin spin around as she pleased, he frowned as he looked at the distraught person in front of him. "It's just a sprained butt, it's not that serious..."
He waved his hand in front of his eyes, trying to pull him back. After a moment of stunned silence, he replied with a bewildered look, "Ah."
Struggling to control his anger, he gritted his teeth and forced a smile: "I said, did you break something?"
"I'm fine..." she said absentmindedly as she walked out of the classroom.
"Ugh, how could nothing be wrong?" Frustrated, I headed to the water dispenser. Those ahead were getting water and chatting; I, however, remained clutching my water cup.
Head down, I fiddled with it. As I walked forward, not paying attention to the person in front of me, my head bumped into someone walking past. The water glass beside me fell to the ground, and the water spilled out.
Looking up, she realized that the person she had bumped into was none other than Ye Ziyi, the man she had liked for a week!
He panicked and didn't know what to do, apologizing several times. Although he didn't seem to mind, he simply replied with an "okay" and left.
But for me, who was the one who bumped into him, I remembered it for a very long time after that accidental collision... That encounter was both exciting and awkward.
The romance of a rainy night is sharing an umbrella with him.
The rain was heavy tonight, so I opened my umbrella and prepared to step into it. A boy walked up beside me. He shielded his hair with his hand and, before he could finish speaking, hurriedly ran under the umbrella.
He gasped, "Excuse me, classmate, can I borrow your umbrella for a bit?" Looking up, I saw water droplets from the boy's hair fall onto my hand.
The two stood facing each other in the rain. Swallowing hard, they looked into each other's eyes. "Ah, okay."
"Thank you, classmate. Let's go then." I took the umbrella from Jiang Yanmu's hand, looked her in the eye, and said.
We strolled in the rain, exchanging a few words occasionally. He was very enthusiastic in trying to find topics to talk about, so different from the person I remembered; he was quite different.
The paths leading to the dorms all go in the same direction. He actually walked me to the dorm entrance first! I...I...I'm so excited!!
He waved to me from a distance and shouted, "Thanks! I'll pay you back tomorrow!" I waved back, feeling quite pleased with myself, and turned to walk back to my dorm.
He rested his chin on his hand, carefully examining yesterday's events. "He said he'd return the umbrella to me tomorrow, but does he even know me?" His initial joy was dashed once again.
