No one's grain comes from thin air.
Especially now that everyone is short of food and water, although the village head's family is doing a little better, they are not doing much better.
It was only because his son worked in the county that they were able to make a little more money.
"Aunt, we've all eaten. We came to see Uncle about something."
The village head had already put down his chopsticks. When he heard Jiang Bai calling for him, he gestured for his family to continue eating while he led Jiang Bai into the courtyard.
Jiang Bai was somewhat surprised.
Is this why they're not even eating?
"Have a seat. What's wrong?"
Several low stools were placed in the courtyard, and a few people sat down. The village head looked very serious, as if he was going to stand up for Jiang Bai.
Jiang Bai was slightly taken aback, then didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
So, in the village head's mind, she came to him seeking help?
"Look at what you're saying, what difficulties could I possibly have? This is good news!"
As he spoke, Jiang Bai opened the basket he had brought and took out a plate of roasted, dark brown yams.
"This is a good thing I found in the mountains. It tastes delicious and is very filling. Please try it."
As he spoke, he placed the plate on the stool.
"From the mountains? This dark-colored thing, can you eat it?"
The village headman feigned doubt, but quickly picked up one and was about to put it in his mouth.
Jiang Bai quickly stopped him, peeled off the outer skin, and handed it over.
"They're quite particular."
The village head muttered something, took it, and put it in his mouth. The food was soft, sticky, and delicious, and the taste was indeed alright.
"It's a good thing. Are there many of these on the mountain?"
He managed to keep his composure and didn't lose his composure too much.
Things that are naturally grown and raised have all been searched for and traded by people. This thing was not discovered before, so it may be a rare commodity. Although it is edible, there may not be enough to eat.
Knowing he would ask that, Jiang Bai took out the yam beans he had brought with him.
"You know Pingshan better than I do. Take a look at this. Have you seen it before?"
The yam beans are round and plump, and some are even strangely shaped. Wild fruits like these are found all over the mountains and fields, so they are not rare. The village head has naturally seen them before, and quite a few at that.
His breathing finally became a little erratic, but fortunately, he managed to maintain his composure in front of the younger generation.
"Is this what the food you give me looks like?"
Jiang Bai took out a few more leaves, and sure enough, they were exactly the same as the ones they had seen on the mountain.
"What you just ate was the root of this plant. It grows very fast. Don't be fooled by its small size; it has quite a few roots growing underneath!"
"well."
"Shanzi, Shanzi."
"Hey, Dad, did you call me?" Jiang Songyuan, the second son of the village head, ran out of the house with a bowl in his hand, still chewing rice in his mouth.
Seeing that he couldn't even put down his bowl and chopsticks after coming out, the village head was so angry that he blew his beard and glared.
"You're like a reincarnated starving ghost, still eating? You'll just stuff yourself to death."
Having been scolded for no reason, Jiang Songyuan looked aggrieved and whispered, "Dad, Jiang Bai and the others are still here. Please give me some face."
"Face? What face do you care about? Put the bowl down right now."
Jiang Songyuan, whose nickname was Shanzi, dared not speak out against his anger. When facing his father, he could only obediently put down his rice bowl and listen to his father's lecture.
“Look at these wild fruits, go to the foot of the mountain and dig some up.”
Jiang Songyuan was puzzled, but he still obediently picked up his hoe and went out.
"Brother Shanzi, be careful. Don't break the skin of that thing when you dig. If you do break it, don't touch it with your hands. It might be poisonous."
Shanzi's heart skipped a beat. He secretly glanced at his father, wondering if the old man disliked him and was going to poison him.
He muttered to himself, but his feet seemed to move with the wind as he quickly ran towards the place where he had seen this thing before.
"Uncle, besides talking to you about the yam, there's something else I'd like to discuss with you today."
So this thing is called yam.
The village head nodded, thinking that it came from the mountains and might even be some kind of medicinal herb, so calling it yam wouldn't be wrong.
"you say."
Jiang Bai has found a new food, although it hasn't been confirmed yet, but the village head now finds her very pleasing to the eye.
"Here's the thing, there's a large piece of wasteland at the foot of Pingshan Mountain next to our house. I've come here today because I want to buy that piece of land."
Why would I suddenly decide to buy wasteland?
Thinking of the yams Jiang Bai had brought, the village head tentatively asked, "What kind of yams are they? Can they be grown?"
"Uncle, yams are drought-resistant and easy to grow."
"If you plant them, the harvest will be plentiful, it just will take some time."
"I don't have much food left at home. If I don't grow more food, I'm afraid I won't be able to survive."
When Jiang Bai said this, she didn't even blush or pant, which made the village head look at her frequently.
Her family didn't have much grain, but didn't she steal several cartloads of it? Nobody knows where she hid it; she managed to avoid being discovered by the investigating officials.
Of course, these are things that everyone knows privately and won't be publicized.
"The land at the foot of the mountain is good, but every autumn harvest, wild boars come down from the mountain and wreak havoc on the crops. There has never been a stable harvest of crops planted there. A few years ago, some people tried to get their hands on the land there, but the animals on the mountain ruined it all. They never managed to get any harvest."
"Besides wild boars, there are also many snakes in that area, and you can easily get bitten if you're not careful."
"The snakes in the mountains are very poisonous. If you get bitten, there's no way to save you."
"If you really want to grow yams, you should see if any family in the village is selling land. There's no need to buy that piece of wasteland. You might not be able to grow good crops and end up ruining it."
The village head's words were truly heartfelt; he was genuinely concerned for Jiang Bai and the others.
