Chapter 4

Chapter 4

After hanging up the phone, Xiao Yuncheng turned around and called Wu Tong. Wu Tong was messaging someone else. Hearing this, he looked up at Xiao Yuncheng.

"Who are you chatting with?"

Xiao Yuncheng approached Wu Tong. Wu Tong typed the last word and clicked send. He then turned off the phone screen and said, "Captain Xiao, our relationship isn't such that I have to report everything I do to you, right?"

"Indeed, I interfered too much. I'm sorry."

Xiao Yuncheng spread his hands and led Wu Tong into the hospital. It was still very lively upstairs. When Shi Qian saw Xiao Yuncheng coming, he immediately pulled him into the ward.

"How did you get pulled back? Are you okay?"

Shi Qian looked at Wu Tong, who smiled at him faintly and said, "It's okay."

"People are in danger. As a people's policeman, of course I have to save them from danger, right, people?" Xiao Yuncheng said as he nudged Wu Tong with his elbow. Wu Tong was speechless and didn't want to pay attention.

"Captain Xiao! The results are out!"

After reading the results, Xiao Yuncheng and Wu Tong looked up at each other simultaneously. Things had developed just as he had predicted. Xiao Yuncheng turned to the others and ordered, "Bring Chen Hao back! He's the suspect!"

The hospital was bustling with activity in the early morning hours, with most people watching the spectacle from the sidelines. Some tried to film the scene with their phones, but the police blocked their view and demanded they delete the video. Xiao Yuncheng and Wu Tong got into the car. Wu Tong looked at the insignificant crowd outside the cordon, feeling a sense of helplessness. These people were simply trying to find some fun in their ordinary lives, to add some variety to their otherwise dull existence. They had no idea how many terrifying hidden threads lay behind these seemingly amusing activities.

Wu Tong glanced back out the window and sighed silently. Xiao Yuncheng came in and saw Wu Tong sighing with emotion. He couldn't help but wonder, "Who did that to you?"

"You didn't listen to me."

Wu Tong turned his head to look at the pedestrians crossing the road ahead. Xiao Yuncheng didn't understand what he was talking about and kept coming up to him to question him. Finally, Wu Tong got annoyed and slapped him back to his seat, saying coldly, "If you had watched the surveillance footage of that road first, you wouldn't have thought Chen Hao was the murderer!"

Xiao Yuncheng suddenly realized what was happening. He had indeed asked someone to copy the surveillance footage, but because he was so caught up in the moment, he had even forgotten the incident that happened on that road. Wu Tong didn't want to look at him again, so she turned away and closed her eyes.

After returning to the police station, everyone took turns interrogating Chen Hao, but Chen Hao was also a worldly-wise man and refused to admit that he had any relationship with the deceased.

Xiao Yuncheng had anticipated this, and a smile appeared on his face, but a closer look revealed that there was no smile in his eyes. He strode into the interrogation room and said something to the interrogating police officer, who nodded and left.

Xiao Yuncheng threw a medical record in front of him and said, "Do you know how I identified you? Do you know why that person wanted to die with you?"

Xiao Yuncheng slowly walked towards Chen Hao, his hands resting on the table, almost eye-level with him. However, his gaze was cold, as if he wanted to dissect a person alive, exposing their filthy soul on the chopping board. Chen Hao, on the other hand, simply stared blankly ahead, without moving a muscle.

"He has a family and relatives. His wife was infected with AIDS because he had it, and the child his wife gave birth to also contracted AIDS."

"What a person wants to become is up to him, but if someone wants to completely destroy him, his family is his weak spot. Without his family, he will have nothing and will no longer fear death."

Chen Hao said in a hollow voice, "Then how can you be sure that I was the one who killed him? Is it just because of this?"

"You don't think they can't track you down just because you used a non-real-name card number, do you?"

Xiao Yuncheng casually pulled over a chair and sat down, looking up at Chen Hao. "He didn't get through to your original number, but you called him later using an unknown phone card, right? You had a sufficient motive for committing the crime. As the supplier of this unfortunate guy, you didn't expect him to hold a knife in front of everyone and try to kill you, right? As for you, just give an honest confession, and we'll give you a lighter sentence."

Xiao Yuncheng picked up the water cup on the windowsill and took a sip, then leaned a little closer to Chen Hao, as proud as a predator watching its prey's last death struggle before enjoying it. But he knew that he had the upper hand. Wu Tong's words finally woke him up and realized that the murderer could not be Chen Hao.

"So, are all you cops so self-righteous?"

Chen Hao, who had originally had no expression on his face, suddenly began to grin exaggeratedly, his smile very strangely: "Do you dare to say that the person who killed him must be me? Are there fingerprints? Are there any videos? Where's the evidence? No, you want to cheat me? It's useless! Hahahaha, it's useless!"

Xiao Yuncheng listened to him, his expression surprisingly unchanged. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. Outside the window, people moved, everything was in motion, but he seemed to have paused, his thoughts frozen.

He was right. From the beginning, Xiao Yuncheng had been intentionally or unintentionally trying to defraud him of his information because he always believed that he was not the murderer. They had no evidence to prove that he was the one who killed the person. Xiao Yuncheng's brain almost exploded.

Xiao Yuncheng slowly walked out of the interrogation room, leaving Chen Hao alone there, laughing wildly.

During this period, Wu Tong had been standing in the interrogation room, looking at Chen Hao across the glass window. His dark eyes showed no ripples or hesitation, as if he had already seen the cunning schemes of these people. He just watched coldly, without making any comments or intervening, and calmly witnessed the whole process.

The atmosphere in the interrogation room suddenly became frozen. Everyone thought that everything would be over as long as Chen Hao was caught. In fact, this was just the beginning. After the blood test showed the presence of drug components, things had already developed into a deeper level.

Xiao Yuncheng had no choice but to hand the case over to the higher-ups and dismiss everyone. Wu Tong followed him out. Chen Hao had a history of drug abuse, so they had to arrange for him to be transferred to the Narcotics Bureau tomorrow to collaborate on solving the case.

Xiao Yuncheng helped Wu Tong open the car door, then he sat in the driving seat and started the car.

"Are you tired?"

Wu Tong rubbed his eyes and said, "A little, but it's okay. What's wrong?"

Xiao Yuncheng glanced sideways at Wu Tong, not knowing what to say for a moment, so he didn't answer him. Seeing no response, Wu Tong also turned his head to look at him, and their eyes met.

Wu Tong saw Xiao Yuncheng avert his eyes unnaturally again, and felt strange, so he leaned towards him, squinting his eyes slightly and looked at him: "I asked you what's wrong, tell me what's going on."

Xiao Yuncheng had no choice but to say, "Do you need me to take you home to rest?"

Wu Tong took out his phone, turned on the screen and waved it in front of Xiao Yuncheng's eyes: "It's one in the morning, and you're not going to send me off, are you planning on letting me go back by myself?"

Xiao Yuncheng was stunned by what he said for a moment before he said, "Sorry, it's my problem."

"That's good to know."

After a short silence, the two started chatting again for some unknown reason.

"Young Painter Wu Tong, why did you feel that the deceased had not been treated in that hospital?"

Wu Tong was a little uncomfortable with his sudden change of address, but he just frowned and thought for a moment, then raised his chin to look at Xiao Yuncheng, and raised the corners of his lips slightly: "Perhaps you should know that we artists all follow our hearts."

Xiao Yuncheng found some of the little expressions on his face very interesting, as lively and cute as a tsundere kitten being tsundere to him.

Xiao Yuncheng laughed out loud and said, "Okay, let's change the subject. Why did you appear in that hospital today?"

Wu Tong acted as if it was natural and said, "I'm sick and going there for a checkup. Is there anything wrong?"

"Of course."

Wu Tong frowned and looked at the person next to him, but the other person just smiled at him very gentlemanly and said, "You suddenly got involved in this case and you have a very high level of attention to it. What is your purpose?"

"No, Officer Xiao, I really was just passing by."

"good."

Xiao Yuncheng suddenly slammed on the brakes, and the sudden impact caught Wu Tong off guard and threw him forward. He immediately steadied himself and turned to glare at Xiao Yuncheng: "Are you crazy?!"

The smile on Xiao Yuncheng's face disappeared in an instant. His eyes turned cold and he looked at Wu Tong with sharp eyes: "You don't have a legal guardian. You are an orphan, right?"

"What do you want to say?"

Xiao Yuncheng sneered, leaning back with a raised eyebrow, but his tone remained unchanged. "An orphan, with neither a foster home nor any other caregivers' registration, it's hard not to wonder how on earth you've managed to survive until now and thrive in the art world."

Wu Tong looked up, and the little light in his eyes disappeared. "In this world, there are countless people from the bottom working hard to climb to the top. I am just one of the few who succeeded."

Wu Tong suddenly raised the corners of his mouth and looked at Xiao Yuncheng with an impeccable look: "Captain Xiao, why do you think I care so much about this case?"

Xiao Yuncheng lowered his eyes and thought for a while before speaking: "Chen Hao, you pay a lot of attention to Chen Hao."

"Yes, I am very concerned about him."

Seeing that Wu Tong admitted it so generously, Xiao Yuncheng became more and more confused about the intentions of the person in front of him.

"I can only tell you that it's not easy for anyone at the bottom to climb up, and they may even be buried in unattainable desires. The people and events they encounter are the most direct cause and effect."

"Drive, Captain Xiao."

"Captain Xiao, the procedures are complete. Just sign and you can leave."

Xiao Yuncheng nodded, took the document, picked up a pen and signed his name neatly, and said to the police waiting nearby: "You can arrange a police car."

Seeing Chen Hao being taken into the police car with his own eyes, Xiao Yuncheng felt that his shoulders were heavier, so he leaned on the railing with one hand in his pocket playing with his mobile phone. His mind was now full of Wu Tong's face after he got out of the car last night. He leaned his hand on the car door and said something incoherent to Xiao Yuncheng.

He said: "Your police rules are the best tools for murderers."

As I was thinking, a call suddenly came in on my phone.

"Hello? What's going on..."

"Captain Xiao! Our police car was attacked, and Chen Hao escaped!"

Wu Tong was sitting in front of the drawing board, holding two or three paintbrushes in his hands. The drawing paper was splattered with black paint, and no one could see that under the black paint, there was a heart that was once very lively. Only Wu Tong was the last one to know of his existence.

A phone call interrupted Wu Tong's thoughts. He took out a piece of paper and wiped it carelessly, then answered the phone: "Hello, who is this?..."

"Don't you want to pay attention to this case? Come to the Municipal Bureau."

The summer sun was incredibly hot, scorching the skin and making the head spin. The roar of the crowd drowned out the street. Xiao Yuncheng slammed the car door shut and strode toward the scene.

The police car was attacked, its front windshield shattered and the front of the car severely deformed by the impact. According to the police officers involved, a white van rushed towards them. A man leaned out of the passenger seat of the van, holding a gun, and pulled the trigger at their car window. The shattered glass injured the police driver and caused them to crash into the iron railings on the side.
