Chapter 56: A Successful Start (V)

No one expected that the initial encounter would turn out like this.

As the battle between the two sides became increasingly tense, in order to gain a little possible advantage, the commanders of both sides continued to order new troops to be sent to the battlefield, resulting in a further expansion of the scale of the battle.

Human physical strength is limited, especially high-intensity combat will make people tired quickly. If there is a qualified commander, he will constantly deploy troops and rotate the soldiers on the front line to ensure the physical strength of the frontline soldiers.

In fact, the commanders of both sides did so, but there was one place they really couldn't take care of, and that was the core of the battlefield where Jiang Yuan and Huang Zong were.

From the situation, both of them were surrounded by the enemy, but since the entire battlefield was actually a huge plain between hills, their location had neither geographical advantages nor political significance. The only thing that could be considered to have some tactical significance was probably the unfinished defensive fortification occupied by Huang Zong.

Unfortunately, these fortifications were basically destroyed in the battle that lasted all day.

So even though each support force went out under the banner of "saving our friendly forces", they mostly fought against the enemy's reinforcements, making these two armies that started fighting early in the morning seem to have nothing to do in the middle of the battlefield.

"Sir, it's getting dark. How about we take a break? My brothers still have some dry food with them. Why don't you eat some first?"

The deputy general, who was exhausted after a day of fighting, took out a dry biscuit and handed it to Jiang Zhiru.

Jiang Yuan, who had always regarded himself as a model of military general and always had to maintain a tough image in front of others, had already taken off his armor and sat down on a big rock. He raised his sore arms to take the pancake and pinched it. It was indeed the same type distributed to soldiers by logistics, and it was unbelievably hard.

Such cakes may be a bit too much to eat, but if you can get a few more and stuff them in the interlayer of your armor, it will be a good defense against Qinghe's powerful crossbows.

However, people are like iron and rice is like steel. If they don’t eat for a meal, even a ruler will feel hungry.

Jiang Yuan took a deep breath, gathered as much of his remaining strength as possible into his teeth, and then bit down hard. Well, it turned out that his sword was still sharp and he could still bite off a piece.

After eating two bites of the pancake, Jiang Yuan felt that he had regained some strength, so he said to his deputy general, "Send someone to tell the enemy that they have been fighting for a whole day and it is already dark. Why don't we stop fighting today and talk tomorrow?"

The deputy general nodded towards Qinghe and said, "I just checked. The Qinghe soldiers haven't rushed out yet. About half an hour ago, they retreated and started making fires to cook. I guess we can't fight tonight. Besides, look at the sky. Although there is a little moonlight, the visibility is actually not very far. It's really not suitable for fighting."

Jiang Yuan was a little surprised and asked, "Can they make a fire and cook?"

"Yes, they were originally going to stay here permanently to build fortifications, and since the laborers all cook and eat on the construction site, they brought their cooking utensils with them."

Jiang Yuan couldn't help but get furious. "These bastards, what bullshit civilian auxiliary soldiers, are just Qinghe combat soldiers in disguise. If Qinghe's civilian auxiliary soldiers had this much combat power, I'd jump into the river and die. And they must have done it on purpose, otherwise who would bring a frying pan and a barbecue grill when ambushing someone?"

Jiang Yuan, who had walked to the front line of the battle between the two armies, smelled the smell of fried food and barbecue coming from the opposite side and started cursing.

"How about I find some brothers, offer them a generous reward, and then rush over to attack them as soon as they finish cooking. Even if we can't get their food back, we can at least smash the pots. If we can't eat, they won't be able to have a good meal either."

Said the equally angry deputy general.

To be honest, almost everyone present who could smell the aroma of Qinghe's food was in a bad mood. When the deputy general proposed to launch a surprise attack, many soldiers stood up, tightened the belts on their armor, and expressed their willingness to participate in the operation.

"Never mind. They did it on purpose. The fireman should be cooking in the center of the position. Who has ever seen anyone cooking or grilling outside the position? They just want to disrupt our morale. If you really rush over now, you'll be courting death. I don't believe they don't have an ambush."

Jiang Yuan waved his hand and continued, "Let the brothers take turns to rest and stay alert. It seems that nothing will happen in the first half of the night, but they might come to attack us in the second half of the night as well."

"Then how about we attack them by surprise?"

"Fuck off! It doesn't matter how the battle goes here. Didn't you notice that the reinforcements from both sides are just surrounding us and fighting, with no intention of coming to support us at all?"

"I noticed this, but I really don't understand what it means."

"If we're rescued, what's the point of fighting? This place isn't a strategic location, nor is it a fortress. What's the difference between taking it and not taking it?"

"So you mean, above..."

At this point, the deputy general still bowed towards the east and continued, "Do the higher-ups need us to be here as a reason? No matter how bad the fighting is here, they can say they're here to rescue us?"

"So you're not that stupid. It's just that we've only figured it out now, but look at the preparations the Qinghe people have been making. They've been thinking this way since the beginning."

"Then what I don't understand is why the people of Qinghe would do this?"

"I haven't figured this out either. This is probably why I've only been a ruler and can't get promoted."

Jiang Yuan stuffed another piece of dry biscuit into his mouth, chewed it carefully, and stopped talking.
