Chapter 11: A less than successful demonstration

He Chun remembered that the mission Lin Hai gave her was to illuminate the world with light.

But for Lin Hai, it doesn’t really matter whether the light is bright or not. After all, candles and oil lamps can be used. He just wants a power source other than steam power.

However, Lin Hai himself knew very well that if he wanted to use electricity as a power source, then the supporting technologies of power generation, transmission, motors, etc., well, in the absence of external interference, he only needed to wait patiently for a few hundred years, and it would surely be realized.

When the grass on Lin Hai's grave grows into a dense forest, the scientific researchers will be able to drive the latest new energy vehicles to visit Lin Hai's grave.

So actually Lin Hai had other expectations.

Of course, none of this matters when seeing He Chun's eyes filled with anticipation and excitement.

Every step in the development of technology is crucial. In this technologically desolate world, every step forward is fragile and precious, both for Lin Hai and for the world at large.

Lin Hai named Laboratory No. 1 "Power Plant" as a comfort to himself and as a kind of nostalgia for the past world. After all, this workshop-like place is actually far from the power plant in Lin Hai's memory.

However, He Chun felt that she understood what the principal meant. The "power plant" meant that she should first deal with the power generation issue. This was also the reason why she asked Lin Hai to come this time.

"Principal, we have taken the first step and specially invited you to come and see it."

Lin Hai watched as this girl, who was used to hiding herself, walked up to him with a group of researchers. For the first time, she raised her head and spoke proudly.

"Okay, then I'll take a good look today to see how far you have come." Lin Hai nodded and walked into the laboratory under the guidance of He Chun.

Laboratory No. 1, which had cost Lin Hai countless "specially approved funds," wasn't what he'd imagined. Although He Chun and the other researchers had donned clean white coats for his arrival, Lin Hai could only imagine the usual working conditions of the lab's various sheet metal parts, the tangled coils of copper wire, and the broken bolts piled in a corner.

In other words, it was actually very reasonable that a wrench suddenly fell out of He Chun's white coat at this time.

He Chun walked over to a workbench, slowly extended his right hand, and pointed downwards forcefully: "Look, this is our finished product, the power generation and lighting combination you mentioned. It hasn't been named yet, so I'm waiting for you to name it."

In fact, Lin Hai had already noticed it before He Chun pointed it over (there was only one workbench in the room, so it would be hard not to notice it). On the workbench should be a very simple hand-cranked generator and a primitive electric lamp whose filament was unknown.

Although it can be clearly seen from the crank handle that this generator is hand-cranked, Lin Hai is still not used to the whole coil being exposed outside. Simply put, it is a generator composed of two magnets and a copper coil, and the light bulb at the other end does not have an outer glass shell. It is just two bare copper wires connected from the generator to a wire that looks like a filament.

Before coming, although Lin Hai was skeptical about the statement in He Chun's report that "the barriers between power generation and lighting have been broken", judging from the situation on the scene, it is actually reasonable to say that "the barriers have been broken", but at most it is just a small brick chiseled off from the magnificent wall of electric power technology.

Lin Hai nodded, keeping a calm expression and said, "Come, demonstrate it first." Then he took several steps back. Finally, after feeling that such a primitive generator could not cause large-scale electric shock accidents, he signaled the researcher who had his hand on the crank to start.

Electricity is invisible to the naked eye.

But electric light allows you to see.

As the researcher, who looked to have particularly strong arms, began to turn the hand crank and gradually accelerated, the coil of copper wire continued to rotate and cut the magnetic induction lines generated by the two magnets. Electrons began to flow, and the electromagnetic induction phenomenon was reproduced in this laboratory. The induced current began to flow from one end of the wire, and then struggled to pass through the resistor prepared in advance.

Well, that is the filament whose material is still unknown.

As the current increased, the filament gradually turned red. The researcher nearby thoughtfully pulled all the curtains in the room, and the red light became the only light source in the room.

Lin Hai remained silent.

From his increasingly heavy breathing, it could be heard that it was not an easy task to keep bending over and cranking the hand crank, especially since he was still accelerating.

The red light became brighter and brighter, and even showed a slight tendency to turn white.

Lin Hai really wanted to applaud. After all, this was the first time in the world that humans had found a way of lighting other than fire. Although it seemed quite primitive, the significance of this breakthrough in thinking at this moment actually far exceeded the filament lighting itself.

At some point, the fire that has warmed and illuminated the world for countless years has proven to be replaceable.

But when the words of praise came to his lips, they turned into an instruction: "Shake faster."

Well, I hope all the researchers are in good health.

When part of the red light turned into yellow light, which was already close to the incandescent lamps that Lin Hai had seen as a child, which burned out easily, were always shaking and dim, everyone heard a soft "bang".

Well, of course, the filament burned out.

When the curtains were drawn, the researcher who had been shaking rapidly for more than ten minutes had left to rest. I hope his arm doesn't hurt.
