Chapter 17: Land to the Tiller (Part 9)

The Songpa family’s farm lit the beacon fire and rang the alarm bell.

"If we don't clean up the fields every day, we won't be able to plant anything in the spring."

On the city wall of Songpa's house, a patrolling farmhand complained.

"You are destined to be a farmer!" responded the man who seemed to be a little taller than him.

At first glance, the average farmhand was wearing coarse cloth clothes patched up with patches made by their own family, and at most, a shirt with the word "Songpa" written on it, which could be considered a uniform.

The slightly taller one was obviously much better equipped.

Not only did his coarse cloth clothes only have nine patches, less than double the number, but in the eyes of the farmhands, it was a brand new piece of clothing. It was also because his clothes fit him well, without revealing his belly when he raised his hands, and because the shoulders of his clothes were inlaid with two pieces of leather that were so dark that the type was hard to tell. It was easy to tell that he was the leader of this patrol team.

"The Songpa family's masters probably want to start a war with the people of Qinghe County."

As the captain, he was naturally more knowledgeable. After all, last night, Young Master Songpa personally met with these farm captains and told them that the bandits from Qinghe wanted to rob the farm, so they were asked to defend it strictly. Anyone who let the Qinghe soldiers in would end up being thrown into the toilet to grow fertilizer.

Of course, the eldest young master was not just intimidating people. He also offered a reward, saying that whoever first discovered the Qinghe soldiers or killed one would be rewarded with at least ten kilograms of brown rice. If he could catch an official, he would also be rewarded with a maid as his wife.

Considering how stingy the Songpa family was towards farmers, this was considered a generous reward not seen in decades.

The captain knew very well that this showed that the Songpa family was actually guilty.

If they were not feeling guilty, the Songpa family would have just let the farmhands do the work, and wouldn't even bother to say "good" if they did a good job. After all, they were farmhands from generation to generation, and they wouldn't bother to pay any attention to them.

If the job is not done well, generally speaking, no one's life will be directly threatened. After all, the farmhand is also the property of the Songpa family. At most, they will be hung up and beaten, or let dogs bite them for a while. How can they directly threaten people's lives?

Thinking of this, the captain silently touched the scar on his waist. It was two years ago when the young lady of the Songpa family, the one named Songpa Chuchu, suddenly wanted a fox fur shawl, so old man Songpa ordered the farmers to go into the mountains to hunt foxes.

It’s funny to say, how can there be a fox in this damn place?

It's possible that there are tigers in the mountains, but even the oldest people have only heard of foxes from merchants from the north. They say that foxes can be caught in the northeast of Daliang, and there are no such animals in Cambodia at all.

What's more, considering the winter temperature in Cambodia, using a fox shawl, is this an attempt to commit suicide by raising body temperature?

Grandpa Sompha knew all these things, Sompha Xiong knew all these things, and Sompha Chuchu also knew all these things, but Sompha Chuchu just made this request. Maybe she just suddenly wanted to act coquettishly?

And old master Songpa agreed.

The eldest son Song Paxiong gathered all the farmhands and asked them to lead the team to hunt foxes in the mountains.

Ten days later, they returned from the mountain, covered in dirt and exhausted.

Since they really couldn't find a fox, and of course, they had never even seen what a fox looked like, they risked their lives, even though two of them were seriously injured, to bring back a tiger for Songpa's family, hoping to atone for their sins.

It was rare that the eldest young master praised them for doing a good job, saying that the tiger was full of treasures. Not only did the old man always want a new tiger-skin chair, but the eldest young master also needed a tiger whip to help him get through the long night.

However, they failed to bring back the fox skin.

Failure to complete the task is a sin.

Fortunately, he was usually quite nice to the farmhands under his command, and the rice porridge mixed with moldy old rice was shared among everyone, so everyone kowtowed and begged for mercy.

Songpa Chuchu then showed some mercy and told him that she would spare him as long as he could hold out for a quarter of an hour under the mouth of the big dog she raised.

The dog is big and fierce.

When the dog was brought in, he was so scared that his legs went limp.

He is not afraid of tigers. He has his iron fork and hunting knife, and if all else fails, he can use his fists.

But he couldn't fight the dog of Songpa's family, and he couldn't even hide. He could only lie on the ground and let it bite him. At most, he could use his arms to protect his throat. After all, as a hunter for many years, he knew that if the throat was bitten, he would really die.

The big dog that jumped up was even taller than him. At that moment, he could even see a piece of flesh stuck in the dog's teeth.

He knew that the dog in Songpa's family ate meat, so he even had a little doubt. Could it be that the eldest lady was kind and fed the dog in advance?

Later he found out that the dog must have been full before coming out, because the big dog just bit him hard. Although it tore pieces of flesh from his body, it was unwilling to eat it. That's how he survived. However, the scars on his body, especially the one on his left kidney, would ache slightly at night, reminding him not to forget this incident.

Songpa Chuchu seemed to have said that these scars could remind them, the lowly farmers, not to always eat the Songpa family's food without working hard for them.

When he woke up from the pile of straw in his shack, his teammates told him that on the day of his execution, his sister, who worked as a maid in Songpa's house, went to plead for him.

Songphak Chuchu immediately fed his sister to the dog, so the dog was full and failed to take his life.
