Chapter 2 Don't Be Tempted
At night, the moon hangs obliquely on the dead branches.
In the boudoir, the candlelight flickered, and the shadows of Wen Wanyu and her daughter hugging each other were cast on the wall.
The mother and daughter were lying on the bed, He Ruoyan was leaning back, and Wen Wanyu was lying down, hugging her waist.
He Ruoyan held Wen Wanyu with one hand and patted her back gently like when they were children.
She wiped her tears with her other hand from time to time: "Mother originally thought that after you came of age, she would find you an ordinary family that loved and cared for you. But..."
She didn't ask Wanwan to be rich and powerful, she only asked Wanwan to be happy and healthy, and to succeed in everything.
But it was too late.
Wen Wanyu buried her head in He Ruoyan's chest, and her tears slid across her nose like pearls that had fallen off the string and fell on the pillow.
After eight years of living together day and night, they have long become the closest relatives in her heart.
He Ruoyan slapped her hand and paused. He said seriously:
"The palace is treacherous, the human heart is unpredictable, and the emperor's grace is like thunder and rain... The beauty is still young, but the favor has faded. I sit leaning against the incense burner until dawn..."
"After entering the palace, the most taboo thing for a woman is to be tempted. Wanwan, you must promise your mother...you must never be tempted."
Wen Wanyu was stunned for a moment, then smiled and said, "Wanwan won't do that."
Replacing sincerity with sincerity is the most foolish thing to do. Zhen Huan gave her sincerity, but in return she received "a man who looks just like you." Ruyi also treated the scumbag Long sincerely, but in the end, "flowers bloom and fall in their own time."
Whether she was moved or sincere, she was doomed to cease to exist the moment she entered the palace.
After not hearing He Ruoyan speak for a long time, Wen Wanyu looked up suspiciously and found that He Ruoyan was staring at the pattern on the curtain, and it seemed that his thoughts had already flown away.
After a moment, she smiled and said, "Wanwan, do you want to know what happened after mother came into the mansion?"
"Hmm... I do."
"When mother entered the mansion, she was the same age as you. At that time, there were two concubines and a principal wife. Mother wanted to live a good life, so she deliberately put on an act to make your father think that she loved him terribly and couldn't live without him. As time went by, your father cherished me so much that he thought of me everywhere and would sleep in my room six out of ten days."
He Ruoyan smiled gently, and faint fine lines could be seen at the corners of her eyes.
Wen Wanyu also listened with great interest.
"But favor is a double-edged sword. My life in the mansion was relatively easy. But the Madam and the concubines couldn't stand your father favoring me alone, so they tried every way to bully me. Even though your father protected me, I still suffered a lot and was bullied a lot. The worst time was when the Madam and the two concubines threw me into the lake. I was unconscious for three whole days."
Wen Wanyu's heart skipped a beat. She had never heard He Ruoyan talk about these things before. Hearing her say these words so calmly, she felt very uncomfortable.
He asked softly, "And then?"
"Your father was furious and drove the two concubines out of the house. He also imprisoned the wife. Your father told me, 'He doesn't have the ability yet, so he can't depose her for now. When the time is right, he will promote me to be his principal wife.'"
Wen Wanyu hugged He Ruoyan's waist distressedly: "Mom."
He Ruoyan looked down at her, his voice tinged with smile: "Are you feeling sorry for your mother?"
Wen Wanyu nodded.
"Mom, have you ever blamed Dad?"
"Of course I blame him." How could I not blame him?
"Then do you still blame Daddy?"
He Ruoyan choked slightly when he heard this. Is it still strange? Then he suddenly understood, shook his head and smiled faintly: "I haven't found it strange for a long time."
"Why did Mother win? Why was she able to defeat them? Wanwan, do you know?"
Wen Wanyu shook her head.
He Ruoyan looked at the crescent moon outside the window, and the corners of her lips curled up slightly: "Because, mother is not moved."
If you don't get emotional, you won't lose.
Wen Wanyu was not very surprised, and she also did not hide her admiration for her, and exclaimed "Wow".
Not being moved is beyond 90% of people.
But then she thought of her father's usual fear of her wife, and felt a little sorry for him. What was going on? Wen Wanyu asked again: "Mom, do you like Daddy now?"
"Your father is so shameless, it's hard for mother not to be tempted."
Wen Wanyu smiled with relief.
He Ruoyan hugged her and said, "Wanwan, you must remember what your mother told you."
"Yes. Wanwan has remembered everything."
"Mother, don't worry. Sister Cheng is also in the palace, so at least there's someone to look after me."
He Ruoyan was silent for a moment, then sighed, "Wanwan, the human heart is unpredictable. Don't trust anyone. Even if that person is Shuyi, you still have to be cautious. Do you understand?"
"Wanwan understands."
The mother and daughter fell asleep in each other's arms.
Wen Lingyuan was not so comfortable. He barely slept the whole night. When he finally fell asleep, he subconsciously reached out to the person beside him, but found nothing.
After realizing that there was no one around, he opened his eyes soberly and helplessly.
The next day, there was a thick dark bruise under his eyes.
Wen Lingyuan rarely looked so haggard. Wen Wanyu unconsciously took a few more glances at him and asked with a smile, "Dad, what's wrong with you? Didn't you sleep well?"
After he finished speaking, everyone at the table looked at him.
Wen Lingyuan lowered his head somewhat embarrassedly: "I'm not used to your mother not being around at night."
He Ruoyan glared at him: "The children are still here, what are you talking about."
There was no blame in his tone, but more of anger.
Wen Wanyu drank the porridge with a smile.
Soon after, this happy atmosphere could no longer be felt.
He Ruoyan picked up a piece of crispy radish for her and said, "Before Wanwan entered the palace, I would always sleep with her at night."
"ah?!"
"All right."
Looking at Wen Lingyuan's helpless look, Wen Wanyu laughed so hard that her stomach hurt.
The time for Wen Wanyu to enter the palace is getting closer.
Inside the palace, it was time for the concubines to pay their respects to the queen.
The hall was bustling with people talking to each other.
"Soon, the sisters will enter the palace, and it will be lively here."
"I really envy Sister Wanfei. I heard that her concubine's sister has also entered the palace and has been given the title of beauty. This can be considered a reunion after a long separation. She will have someone to look after her in the harem."
The person who spoke was An Xiuyi. Her tone was brisk, and she would glance at Concubine Wan from time to time.
Concubine Wan could naturally hear that she was being sarcastic. Two sisters serving one king wasn't unusual, but it was enough to make people feel uncomfortable.
Concubine Wan didn't take An Xiuyi seriously at all. She raised her eyelids slightly and said, "When did you reach this point, and when did you say this again?"
An Xiuyi was stunned.
"Besides." Concubine Wan raised her eyes and stared at her with a smile: "There are many things you should envy me for."
Lin Fenyi followed closely behind and said with a smile, "The favor bestowed upon Concubine Wan is unique in the palace. Not only An Xiuyi, but I, too, envy her."
An Xiuyi's face flushed red.
He glanced at Concubine Zhengui and saw that she didn't want to help, so he lowered his head in embarrassment.
Everyone in the palace knew that An Xiuyi was relying on Concubine Zhengui to climb up the social ladder.
The Queen lowered her eyes and sat upright on the Phoenix Chair, feeling annoyed. The Queen's demeanor was dignified. Although her facial features were not that stunning and charming, there was a sense of dignity between her eyebrows and eyes.
Concubine Zhengui stood up and said, "Your Majesty, I am tired and will return to the palace first."
The Queen nodded gently: "Go back and have a good rest, Concubine."
Concubine Zhengui bowed slightly, turned around and left. All the concubines in the hall, except the Empress, stood up and bowed.
When passing by Concubine Wan, she didn't even look at her: "I envy Concubine Wan too."
As soon as she finished speaking, Concubine Wan's smug smile disappeared.
