Chapter 59: Unexpected Encounter
Wen Wanyu thought: The Queen will always be a thorn in their side. It's impossible to remove it, but it's also impossible to digest it, neither painful nor itchy. If she doesn't act, it's fine. But if she does, it will definitely turn into hatred.
So, it is better not to reconcile, so as to avoid the heartache when the thorn is removed.
…
Wen Wanyu waited for two days and finally waited for Concubine Wan to come and apologize to her.
After paying their respects, they stood only three meters away from Fengyi Palace. Concubine Wan looked gloomy and said, "This palace."
Wen Wanyu exclaimed, "Ah!" "What?"
Concubine Wan bit her lip, unable to utter the words of apology. She felt conflicted and lost. It was too difficult for a concubine to apologize to a concubine.
Wen Wanyu bowed and said, "If Concubine Wan has nothing else to do, I will go back first."
"Hey" Concubine Wan called her.
Wen Wanyu looked at her quietly, waiting for her to explain the reason.
Concubine Wan's face was gloomy. "I'm sorry, Concubine Ling. I shouldn't have asked someone to dress up as a ghost to scare you."
Is this the favorite concubine? Even her attitude towards apology is so arrogant, as if she was not the one who did anything wrong.
Wen Wanyu couldn't manage to smile, and simply said, "Your Majesty, please be more careful next time."
Concubine Wan's face froze.
She raised her voice with a bad tone, "Jieyu Ling."
Wen Wanyu smiled faintly: "What else do you want, Madam?"
"You are but a concubine. My apology to you is the blessing you have earned through several lifetimes. You don't want to..."
Before she could finish the five words "shame on you" she saw Wen Wanyu opposite her slowly raising her eyelashes and interrupting her.
Gazing at her square eyes that were like frozen lake water, she asked, "My Lady, what do I not want?"
Her gaze was so aggressive that Concubine Wan was choked for a moment.
Wen Wanyu said calmly, "Your Majesty, let me remind you that this is in Fengyi Palace, not your Jinxiu Palace."
Concubine Wan sneered, "Jieyu Ling, just wait for me."
Wen Wanyu smiled, "I'm waiting for you."
Concubine Wan was so angry that her whole body was numb and her teeth were chattering. It was the first time she had encountered a concubine who was so fearless and disdainful of her.
Her rationality had been swept away by anger. She didn't care that she was still outside Fengyi Palace, didn't care that the emperor had put her under house arrest, and didn't care that the emperor asked her to apologize.
She shouted, "Someone come."
Hua Shan was startled and held Concubine Wan's hand: "Your Majesty, please think twice."
"Your Majesty, have you forgotten what the Emperor said?"
Concubine Wan was no longer rational and shook off her hand, "I haven't forgotten."
"Jieyi Ling committed an offense against her superiors, and shall be punished with a cane..."
The sound of hurried footsteps interrupted her. Nanny Li said in a neither humble nor arrogant tone, "Empress Wan, the Empress has asked me to take you back to Jinxiu Palace to reflect on your mistakes."
Hua Shan then whispered, "Your Majesty, let's go back to Jinxiu Palace first. The Emperor will be furious!"
Concubine Wan snorted coldly, "Don't bother Madam Li. I know the way."
When passing by Wen Wanyu, he bumped into her and left.
Wen Wanyu looked straight at her. His gaze was like the chill of a winter night, only frozen cold.
Defei and Yang Deyi walked slowly from the opposite direction. Defei asked gently, "Jieyu Ling, are you okay?"
It seemed that Consort De and Yang Deyi had gone to help her get reinforcements. Wen Wanyu bowed: "Thank you for your concern, Consort De. I am fine."
"I'm glad you're alright."
Yang Deyi said, "Jieyu Ling has lost a lot of weight since being poisoned."
Wen Wanyu smiled faintly and said, "This time, I also escaped from the gates of hell. My luck has always been so 'good'. What do you think, Sister Defei?"
The look he gave Defei and Yang Deyi was as clear as seeing through fire.
Concubine De was stunned for a moment: "Jieyu Ling, please have a good rest and don't let yourself get sick."
Nanny Li spoke at the right moment: "Empress Defei, Miss Yang, the Empress wants to discuss something important with Concubine Ling."
Concubine De seemed relieved. "Then please go quickly, Concubine Ling. Don't keep the Empress waiting for too long."
Wen Wanyu walked towards Fengyi Palace.
The queen was standing in the yard.
"My Lady, please look for my concubine."
The Queen looked at her and spoke gently, "Actually, it's nothing serious. I just wanted to talk to you. Shuyi hasn't been coming to Fengyi Palace much lately, and she often gets distracted when I talk to her."
"You and Shuyi...are you because of me?"
Wen Wanyu was surprised for a moment, but then she returned to normal, "There are too many things between me and Cheng Zhaorong."
This is a disguised admission.
An indescribable emotion slowly rose in the queen's eyes. She stared at Wen Wanyu blankly. After a long while, she forced herself to smile.
"Are you feeling uncomfortable because Shuyi and I are getting too close?"
"No." Wen Wanyu smiled calmly.
The Queen was a little stunned, her eyes a little confused: "Why is that?"
Wen Wanyu shook her head: "It's my own problem."
"Your Majesty, I hope you don't feel guilty about this. To be honest, I'm just thinking too much." Wen Wanyu couldn't just turn hostile without getting to the last step.
She has figured it out logically these days, and combined with what Cheng Shuyi told her about the queen before, Wen Wanyu is more certain of her guess.
There was a hint of temptation in her voice: "If your Majesty has something on your mind or something that makes you unhappy, you can tell me."
The Queen smiled and shook her head: "Tell me about you, I heard that the Emperor was very happy to know that you 'caught a ghost'."
Wen Wanyu feigned a shy smile. "Yesterday, the emperor and I discussed the punishment. He said a lot of random things, many of which he had to do. There were also things he was unable to do. I don't understand."
A barely perceptible surprise flashed across the Queen's eyes. The Emperor had actually told her all this. The Queen thought: She must be special.
He looked at the person in front of him, and then said, "Then let me tell you one more thing."
"Not long after my Third Prince passed away, I was poisoned. That period happened to be when Concubine Wan was at her peak of favor. She fell into the water and nearly died. But years have passed, and I still don't know who did it."
Wen Wanyu was stunned at first, "I have never heard Concubine Wan mention it."
The Queen said meaningfully, "Firstly, it's been a long time since the incident happened. Secondly, the Emperor has issued an order not to allow anyone to discuss this matter privately."
There is only one possibility for someone the emperor openly protects.
This matter still needs to be considered. The Queen's words were taken out of context.
Wen Wanyu was a little dazed.
The Queen placed her hand on her shoulder and said, "Do you remember what I told you last time? Be careful of Concubine Zhengui?"
Wen Wanyu nodded: "I remember."
The Queen tightened her grip and squeezed her shoulder: "After listening to what I said today, do you understand why I said that?"
The Queen's words finally made Wen Wanyu understand everything.
"Your Majesty, are you afraid that something bad might happen to me as well?"
The Queen patted her shoulder, then withdrew her hand and said, "I like both you and Shuyi, so I don't want anything to happen to you."
Wen Wanyu was touched on the surface: "Thank you, Queen."
What the queen meant was that Concubine Zhengui was very jealous and could not tolerate the favored concubines.
Wen Wanyu walked out of Fengyi Palace and made a vague guess: what the Queen said was to make her afraid of Concubine Zhengui, or to let her take action and use her to get rid of Concubine Zhengui.
But this idea was too bold. She was just making a superficial guess.
In other words, what merits did she have? She was lucky to have survived until the end.
