Chapter 33 Stirring Up the Flames

"I'm not doing anything reckless."

Xin Jiuwei took her sister's arm, and the two sisters walked back together.

"Sister, you've seen it yourself. Xie Changjing is all bark and no bite. Besides, even if things get out of hand, the Xie family will have to consider our Xin family and won't dare to do anything."

"Sister, you always give them too much face, which is why these young masters dare to ride roughshod over us."

Xin Xiyao sighed: "The Xin family is no longer the same as it was when our great-grandfather was alive. Now we rely on our father to support us. We can just bear with these little things."

“How can this be considered a small matter?” Xin Jiuwei disagreed. “You saw what Xie Changjing did just now. It’s not just that he looks down on us; he’s clearly a lecher! He dares to treat you like this while Father is still alive. If you two really get married, will he still respect you after Father passes away?”

"Will my sister have a good time then?"

"Alright, alright." Seeing that she was getting angrier and angrier, with her delicate eyebrows almost flying to the sky, Xin Xiyao quickly stopped her, "We're not going to discuss marriage with him anyway, so why are you so angry?"

Xin Jiuwei said, "Sister, you're such a pushover. You look so proud and imposing, yet you're so easily manipulated."

"You're talking about me again." Xin Xiyao pretended to pinch Xin Jiuwei. "Have you forgotten how formidable I used to be?"

Xin Jiuwei wasn't in pain, and said with a grin, "Sister, you'd better be just as tough as me when you face these people in the future."

Xin Xiyao said irritably, "Who bullied you?"

The two chatted and laughed for a while longer before returning to their seats.

Upon seeing Xin Xiyao return, those who had been captivated by her music came forward to chat, and the Xin sisters once again became the center of the spring banquet, while Xue Yingxue and Qi Huaiyu were nowhere to be found.

Looking at her sister in the crowd, Xin Jiuwei felt a sense of relief. Now that her brother had successfully become a disciple of a great Confucian scholar, and her sister's talent had not been stolen by Xue Yingxue, they would surely be able to turn misfortune into good fortune in the future, and the Xin family would not perish as it had in the previous life.

On the other side, Xie Changjing was rudely tricked by Xin Jiuwei, and with nowhere to vent his anger, he kicked the short-necked tree by the lake several times.

"Brother Changjing, what's wrong with you?"

Qi Huaiyu's voice rang out leisurely as he slowly walked up to Xie Changjing.

"What could possibly warrant such a big outburst?"

Xie Changjing was furious: "You still have the nerve to come here? It's your cousin Xin Jiuwei!"

Qi Huaiyu looked surprised: "What happened to Jiuwei again?"

Xie Changjing recounted what had just happened with a sullen face, and then angrily added, "She used to follow you around all the time, and I thought she was a nuisance. How come she's not chasing after you anymore, but instead she's biting people everywhere, and she's so sharp-tongued! How come you can't even control a girl!"

"Brother Changjing, you're wronging me!" Qi Huaiyu quickly protested. "You know, Jiuwei has always been spoiled and arrogant; how could I possibly control her?"

Xie Changjing said, "Anyway, don't say I'm disrespecting you, I really can't swallow this insult."

“That’s natural,” Qi Huaiyu said. “Jiu Wei really went too far today.”

As he spoke, he shook his head helplessly, his face showing a look of having something difficult to say.

"Brother Changjing, you don't know this, even her father can't do anything about her."

Having realized Xin Jiuwei's formidable nature twice in a row, Xie Changjing immediately patted Qi Huaiyu's shoulder sympathetically upon hearing this.

“I understand, I understand. She doesn’t read as much as her sister, so she probably doesn’t understand right from wrong. She’s just a shrew. Sigh, Brother Qi, you’ve really had a hard time.”

Qi Huaiyu forced a smile.

Xie Changjing's face darkened again. "Since that's the case, Brother Qi, don't blame me for being merciless. Xin Jiuwei insulted me today, and I must get my revenge."

"That's for sure," Qi Huaiyu said. "Brother Changjing, you may not know this, but even my uncle often tells me that Jiuwei's personality needs to be tempered, otherwise she will suffer a great loss in the future! She probably needs to fall down hard before she can restrain herself a bit."

She sighed again as she spoke, "But you know, she's been pampered since she was little, how could her family bear to let her actually fall? Alas, they're just too soft-hearted."

“Then let me do it,” Xie Changjing said. “You may not be willing, but I am! I’ll help you with this. After you get married, it will be good for her to know who to listen to.”

Qi Huaiyu quickly replied, "No, no, as long as I can curb her temper and live up to my uncle's expectations, I will be very satisfied."

Xie Changjing waved his hand, "Don't worry, we won't really do anything to her. We'll just scare her a little."

Qi Huaiyu looked helpless. "Then I'll have to trouble you, Brother Changjing. Oh, and please, don't hurt Jiuwei..."

"I know, I know, why are you being so long-winded?" Xie Changjing said impatiently. "You're just too indulgent with her."

Qi Huaiyu smiled slightly: "There's nothing we can do about it."

The people at the table were unaware of what they were plotting. With the prize for today going to Xin Xiyao, the young masters and ladies were already preparing for the next activity.

Yuan Xiaoshi looked around but didn't see Xue Yingxue, and felt a great sense of schadenfreude.

"Let her see how she always looks down on us; she's really embarrassed herself today."

Liu Qi looked at her and sighed, "Even if you dislike her, you should at least keep it to yourself. What kind of impression will it make if word gets out?"

"So what?" Yuan Xiaoshi said indifferently. "She was indeed born into a military family, but her father clearly deserted during the battle and was captured by the enemy before he died. The general above took pity on her small family and her mother's poor health, so he let the matter slide and even wrote to the emperor to add her family to the list of beneficiaries. Everyone in Yingzhou City knows about this."
