Master 15
Song Jing tightly grasped the bottle of pepper spray in her hand, leaning against the wall to slow down her breathing.
He Mian was very smart. She knew that he would eventually notice the uneasy atmosphere between them. But he probably couldn't guess that Song Jing had caused such a big misunderstanding.
"Or if I did something that annoyed you, you can tell me." He Mian was afraid of irritating Song Jing. He was clearly the cat, but Song Jing looked more like a cat right now, a cat with its fur standing on end. He could only stay where he was while talking to her.
She leaned against the wall and glanced back at the flashing lights of the surveillance camera. "How did you know about the news about the cat abuse in the neighborhood?"
Song Jing thought about it for a long time, but she still couldn't ask He Mian directly. After thinking for a long time, she asked the question she wanted to ask in a roundabout way.
He Mian was stunned for a moment, not understanding why Song Jing asked such a question, but this must be the key to her misunderstanding of him.
He narrowed his eyes and looked at Song Jing. It seemed that she didn't know yet that he was Xiaomian.
He Mian pursed his lips. "I didn't see the crime scene, but my friend and I were the ones who took the injured kitten to the hospital. I made the video circulating online and I contacted the media to release it, so I've known about this all along, even before you did."
Song Jing opened her lips slightly, obviously a little surprised.
He Mian sighed. He probably knew why Song Jing treated him like this. He laughed helplessly, "Do you suspect I'm a cat abuser?"
Song Jing blinked in acquiescence. She looked at He Mian a little embarrassedly. The corridor's sensor lights were illuminated by their presence. His amber eyes looked straight at her, and his eyes looked a little red. She didn't expect to see such a wronged expression in someone like He Mian.
For some reason, Song Jing suddenly thought of the rabbit. Its eyes were golden and the outer circle of its pupils was also green.
She was wondering if she had made some big misunderstanding, because she had made a subjective assumption that He Mian was a psychopathic villain.
She slowly lowered her hand holding the spray and asked, "Then why are there so many stray cat messages in your study?"
He Mian was silent for a while, and when he saw Song Jing's expression, he knew that she had really misunderstood him.
But he couldn't confess his identity to her directly now. Someone like Song Jing, who didn't even believe that there were ghosts in the world, would never believe that he was Xiaomian.
"My friend is the founder of an offline stray animal rescue organization, and I am also half a founder. So I have information about stray cats nearby." What He Mian said was true.
Fortunately, in order to conceal his true identity, he had already done some work to avoid arousing suspicion when he appeared as a human.
"Now the rescue agency is cooperating with the government's rescue center. If you don't believe it, you can search it online." He Mian saw that she seemed to be a little relaxed and he also breathed a sigh of relief.
Song Jing decisively took out her cell phone and searched it, entering the name of the organization and the name of his friend that He Mian told her. What he said was true.
"I'll take you somewhere." He Mian took two steps closer. Song Jing put her phone back in her bag and watched him approach her.
"Where are you going?" The two were now three or four meters apart, but fortunately the corridor was quiet enough for them to hear each other's voices clearly.
"Go check on the two injured kittens. That should be more convincing." He Mian took two steps forward. "Don't worry, they've been sent to the hospital for treatment and are out of danger."
"Okay..." She responded hesitantly. He Mian probably wasn't lying to her, but her psychological instincts didn't make her completely trust him, trust a man who suddenly appeared in her life.
The two stood in silence in the elevator, Song Jing and him maintaining a normal social distance. He Mian looked at Song Jing's figure reflected in the elevator door.
Song Jing happened to look up at him, and their eyes met at the door.
Song Jing swallowed and said, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to look at the things in your study."
He Mian knew that she had only seen it because she was helping him find documents. He shook his head and said, "It's okay. Once the misunderstanding is resolved, everything will be fine."
He curled his lips and said in a tone that hinted at grievance and coquettishness: "Fortunately, I didn't do anything wrong. I thought you really hated me."
Song Jing lowered her head and stopped looking at him. Now she really wanted to dig a hole in the elevator and crawl into it.
It was not without reason that she misunderstood He Mian, but this misunderstanding was so far from the truth that it was a bit outrageous.
People will be at a loss when they are embarrassed. If Song Jing could not put her hands on the shoulder bag, she would not know where to put her hands.
The two arrived at the parking lot on the first floor underground. The parking space that He Mian bought was next to Song Jing's. He walked to the back seat of the car and opened the door. He looked at Song Jing gently and motioned her to get in his car. The two of them went to the veterinary hospital together.
She glanced at He Mian's car door. She had ridden in his car before. But because human instinct and psychology were still protecting her own safety, she didn't want to get too close to him yet.
"No, that's not necessary. Let's get in separate cars. You drive your car and I'll follow you." Song Jing glanced at the back door that He Mian opened on his own initiative, and while rejecting him, she walked around to her own car.
"I'm sorry." She felt that her words contained too obvious resistance and seemed a little too hurtful, so she added softly.
"It's okay, then just follow me closely." He Mian looked at her, then lowered his head and wrote an address to Song Jing, which was the address of an animal hospital. "This is the detailed address." He raised his head again and looked at Song Jing who got into the car. He smiled at her through the car window and started the car.
The hospital wasn't far from the community, and it took less than ten minutes to drive there. Song Jing poked her head out the window and saw that their destination was indeed an animal hospital. She followed He Mian's car and stopped.
"Let's go in together."
"Um."
This is a fairly large private animal hospital. Song Jing thought they would have to go through some appointment-related procedures before they could enter the hospital, but she only saw the front desk staff stand up and bow to He Mian, who then stopped and nodded at them.
"Let's go straight up." He Mian slowed down his pace to keep the same stride as Song Jing.
Song Jing quietly looked around the hospital before getting on the elevator. Pet hospitals are mostly private. She hadn't been to a place like an animal hospital for a long time. The last time was probably when she brought her little rabbit here for a physical examination.
There are also hospital advertisements and introductions to the hospital floors in the hospital elevator.
She could only tell that the hospital seemed to have been invested in on a considerable scale, and the interior looked quite new, suggesting it had been built within the past ten years.
He Mian took her into an office.
"Mr. He, are you here to see those two kittens?" Doctor Liu was a little surprised when he saw that it was He Mian who came. He had always told the hospital in advance every time he came before, but today he came in a hurry.
But before He Mian could respond, Dr. Liu stood up and prepared to take him to see the two stray cats that were still recovering.
"Well, how are they doing lately?"
"There's nothing serious wrong with the kitten, but he can't be discharged yet," the doctor said to He Mian. "Would you like to see the kitten's latest test results?"
"Well, let me take a look." He Mianxue's professional knowledge has nothing to do with medicine, but he is very familiar with the physical data of animals like cats, and he can also read basic examination results reports.
Song Jing stood aside feeling a little awkward. Seeing that she came with He Mian, Dr. Liu thought that she was also a member of the rescue organization or a friend of He Mian, so he did not communicate with her much.
She silently took a few small steps closer to He Mian and glanced at the report he was reading.
"How is the victimized kitten now?"
This floor was probably where the doctors' offices were. It was very quiet around, without any sounds of cats or dogs talking. Her voice also subconsciously became softer when she spoke.
"There's no danger to their lives anymore. Let's go check on them now." He Mian looked back at her. She finally let down her guard and was at least willing to get closer to him.
"Okay." Song Jing nodded in response.
Doctor Liu took He Mian and the others down one floor. The two little guys were still recovering from their injuries and were not in very good spirits, but when they saw someone coming, they stared at them with their big eyes like light bulbs.
He Mian looked back at Doctor Liu, who left the ward on his own accord.
"Do you want to take a closer look at them? But be careful. Those who grew up as strays tend to be more alert and a bit fierce. They might bite people." He Mian tilted his head to look at Song Jing. Song Jing looked at the kittens through the glass door and poked the glass door with his fingertips to test it.
He Mian tilted his head and looked at her steadily, unable to help but smile. Song Jing had always been the best person in the world and should be the one he loved the most. Even if she misunderstood him, it must be his problem.
Thinking of this, he felt a little aggrieved.
When the two cats saw He Mian, they silently moved closer to Song Jing. Cats in the wild have a hierarchy, and He Mian's status is too high in their eyes, so they would avoid him no matter what they do.
Because Maomao felt that he could not delay He Mian's progress. He Mian was like the head of the cats, with his own dignity.
Of course, He Mian was different from these innocent kittens; he didn't care about the so-called hierarchy. Song Jing had misunderstood him because of the cats' behavior.
The kittens don't know the difference between humans and cats, so they think Song Jing is a gentle, beautiful and huge cat, and they like to play with her more than He Mian.
She and He Mian exchanged a glance, then stretched out both hands and poked the kitten. The glass door was not open, so Song Jing simply teased the kitten through it.
"I'm sorry, I misunderstood you." Song Jing frowned, and now she also wanted to dig a hole in the ground and crawl into it.
"It's okay." He Mian replied softly, "Just don't really hate me."
Song Jing glanced at He Mian and felt that his gaze was about to burn her. She bent over and continued to poke the glass door to tease the kitten.
"Do they have names?" Song Jing raised her head and asked He Mian.
He shook his head, "No, but they have numbers. All the kittens we can keep an eye on have numbers."
Song Jing had a good memory, and the table she remembered did contain a lot of number values that were combinations of numbers and letters.
"Where did you find the kitten in our neighborhood?"
"This orange cat was found in the flower bed in front of Building A12, and the other one was picked up next to the trash can in Building 14." He Mian recalled it, because the location and time were the key to finding the murderer, he remembered them very clearly.
"Then let's call this orange cat Little Flower Bed." Song Jing was silent for a moment and then suddenly spoke.
"So this cow cat is called Trash Can?"
Song Jing was amused by what He Mian said. She shook her head and said, "Well, trash can doesn't sound good. Let's just call it Building A 14."
He looked at her smiling face. After so many years, Song Jing's naming habit remained unchanged.
But he still thinks his Xiaomian is the best name.
"By the way, when we came to the hospital just now, why didn't we need to make an appointment? Everyone seemed to know you..." She put down her hands and stopped teasing the kitten, turning her head to look at He Mian who was standing next to her.
He Mian lowered his eyebrows and looked at her. The two of them were quite close to each other because they were looking at kittens together. Their warm breaths intertwined. The last time they were so close was when they were taking pictures in a dog cafe.
"I invested in this hospital and am half the owner. They all know me."
