Chapter 285 The Uninvited Guest

On New Year's Eve, Wen Shuqiao started preparing dinner at seven o'clock.

Can Can wanted to eat hot pot, so Wen Shu Qiao planned to make a tomato broth. Since it was just the two of them, one big and one small, they couldn't eat much, so she prepared all kinds of meat and seafood.

I didn't finish my meal today, so I'll make a small bowl of maocai (a type of Sichuan hot pot) tomorrow. I'm still quite full.

Can Can enthusiastically performed her job—peeling garlic.

The cake and milk were lying right next to him, keeping him company.

As he peeled the shell, he asked, "Auntie, is Uncle really not coming today?"

My aunt bought so many delicious things, it's such a pity that my uncle can't eat them!

“Uncle went to visit his grandfather. We can’t finish all this food. Uncle might come over tomorrow, and we can eat together.” Wen Shuqiao was looking for the tomato sauce and seasonings in the cabinet, but she couldn’t find them no matter how hard she looked.

After thinking carefully, I remembered that Can Can wanted to eat tomato beef brisket last week, and I ate it.

Wen Shuqiao closed the cabinet, picked up her phone from the side, and prepared to order takeout.

She planned to sit at the coffee table with Can Can while watching the Spring Festival Gala, which was very pleasant.

I was just about to open the food delivery app when I received a monitoring notification.

After waiting for a while, there was no sound of doorbell or knocking. It shouldn't be Shen Jiazhou, and Shen Jiazhou is at the old house right now, so it's impossible for him to come.

She looked up at the entrance hall with a puzzled expression, and then opened the surveillance app to see who it was.

After clicking in, I realized it was a notification from the security camera at Shen Jiazhou's door.

After Shen Fang and Xu Zhen visited once before, Shen Jiazhou had her download an app so she could see what was happening at the door at any time.

Later, when they moved over, Shen Jiazhou also installed one in front of their door. They were the same model, using the same app, and hadn't deleted the previous bindings, so they could see what was in front of each other's doors.

She clicked on the surveillance footage outside Shen Jiazhou's house with suspicion. One minute earlier, Shen Jiazhou had returned home.

Um?

Didn't Shen Jiazhou go to the old house?

Wen Shuqiao flipped through the previous records again, which included the times he left and returned.

She put down her phone, looked at Can Can who was diligently peeling garlic beside her, and said after thinking for a moment, "Baby, come here."

When Can Can heard his aunt call him, he immediately stood up and walked over to her: "Auntie, Officer, is there anything I can do for you?"

Wen Shuqiao bent down and handed him the phone: "Don't you miss your uncle? Ask him if he's finished eating. He'll be home soon. Do you want to come over?"

Can Can nodded and saluted: "Okay, I'll wash my hands first!"

The garlic smelled a bit after peeling, so he wanted to wash it clean before touching his aunt's phone!

Shen Jiazhou entered the house, changed his shoes, and without turning on the lights, walked to the sofa and sat down by the light from the window. He leaned back, rested his head on the sofa, and stared blankly at the dim ceiling.

The Shen family's New Year's Eve dinner started promptly at 7:00 PM, and he left the table at 7:15 PM.

After staring at the ceiling for a long time, Shen Jiazhou came to a conclusion.

He is mentally disabled.

He was actually fooled by just a few words. What was wrong with his brain?

The phone, which was placed to the side, chimed, illuminating the room.

He took out his phone; it was a WeChat message from Wen Shuqiao.

Shen Jiazhou opened the voice message bar, and Can Can's voice came through.

"Uncle, are you back? Now that you're back, do you want to come over and we can stay up all night to celebrate the New Year together and watch the Spring Festival Gala!"

Shen Jiazhou's cold expression relaxed a little. After thinking for a moment, he replied, "I'm still at the old house. I won't be coming today."

He didn't know how to tell Can Can and Wen Shu Qiao that he hadn't eaten a single bite of his New Year's Eve dinner and had come back feeling very angry.

It's New Year's Eve today, so I won't go and upset them.

Shen Jiazhou sighed and sat up. While other families were celebrating the New Year, his home was cold and deserted.

Soon, Cancan sent another message.

"Alright then, Uncle! Auntie said her property management sent a message saying there are fireworks to watch downstairs. Since you're not back, I won't go watch them."

"Uncle, if you get home and there are still kids setting off fireworks, please take a picture for me! I want to see it!"

Both voice messages were filled with unconcealed disappointment.

Are there any children setting off fireworks downstairs?

Shen Jiazhou scrolled down and sure enough, at five o'clock, the property manager sent him a message. The gist of it was that there were free sparklers downstairs, and residents with children or who were interested could come down to play.

He returned to Wen Shuqiao's WeChat and said in a voice message, "Okay, I'll take the picture for you."

Cancan sent a big heart emoji.

Shen Jiazhou leaned back for a while longer before finally getting up from the sofa.

Anyway, there's nothing else to do right now, so I'll go downstairs and take the pictures now, and send them to Cancan later to get them done, so that all the kids downstairs will go home later and I won't be able to take any pictures.

He left home and had just stepped out of the elevator when he heard the cheerful laughter of children. Looking outside, he could see several children running past, each holding a sparkler.

Shen Jiazhou walked out, and a cold wind blew in his face, making the stray hairs on his forehead flutter upwards.

He stood in front of the building, looked around to see which side had more children, and then took out his phone and turned on the camera mode.

He took a picture and glanced down at it.

I'm a little disappointed; the photos aren't very good.

He picked up his phone again, this time to record a video, capturing all the laughter and joy.

After filming for nearly a minute, Shen Jiazhou was about to press the pause button, but he froze the moment he touched it.

Two "uninvited guests" appeared in his shot.

Shen Jiazhou looked up from the screen and at the person standing ten meters away from him.

He blinked slightly; they were still there.

Can Can looked at Shen Jia Zhou, who was standing motionless in the distance, and with a happy smile on her face, she picked up the bag and ran towards him: "Uncle!"

Shen Jiazhou watched as Cancan flew into his arms like a little bird, and only after he hugged her did he feel a sense of reality.

Wen Shuqiao and Cancan really appeared in front of him.

He glanced at Can Can, who was hugging his waist, somewhat bewildered, and then couldn't help but look up at Wen Shu Qiao.

Wen Shuqiao was carrying a bag in one hand, holding a cake in the other, and had a cat carrier slung over her shoulder.

But she was still smiling.

She took steps, one by one, towards him.

Shen Jiazhou felt that the frequency of his heartbeat was in sync with her pace.
