Chapter 291 Happy New Year

Wen Shuqiao paused for a moment, then turned back and asked, "What do you want to say?"

She remembered that she had made an unreasonable request before, and it was fair that Shen Jiazhou made it this time.

The lights were off in the rooms, except for the children's room and Shen Jiazhou's room, which had some light coming through.

Shen Jiazhou's Adam's apple bobbed as he hesitated.

Wen Shuqiao even took a step back and moved closer to him: "Hmm? Go ahead and say it."

Shen Jiazhou looked at her, then quickly looked away, and said somewhat vaguely, "Could I... hug you?"

He spoke vaguely and quickly, and after he finished speaking, he looked like he was about to burst into flames, and the faint blush that had just faded returned.

Shen Jiazhou didn't dare to look at Wen Shuqiao. He lowered his eyes and stared at the tips of his shoes: "Never mind, forget I didn't..."

Before he could utter the last word, he was embraced.

Wen Shuqiao slid her hands across his arms and politely gave him a hug.

But Shen Jiazhou felt as if his blood was boiling, and he was so stiff that he dared not move.

After realizing what was happening, she hesitated for a second and raised her hands slightly, but she still didn't dare to touch Wen Shuqiao's back.

His hands were so hot, he was afraid of burning her.

Wen Shuqiao had no idea what he was thinking. She gently patted his back twice and then said, "You've worked hard, Jia Zhou. I hope you can be happy and healthy every day in the new year."

After giving her blessings, Wen Shuqiao lowered her hand and was about to straighten up when Shen Jiazhou pulled her into a tight embrace.

She was stunned for a moment, then subconsciously raised her face slightly, resting her chin lightly on Shen Jiazhou's shoulder.

The person holding her buried his head in the crook of her shoulder, his burning skin pressed against hers, causing Wen Shuqiao to instinctively flinch. But the arms around her waist tightened, giving her no chance to escape.

However, Shen Jiazhou noticed her flinching and suddenly came to his senses, his impulsive passion instantly turning cold.

Reason prevailed over instinct, and Shen Jiazhou loosened his grip slightly, intending to let go of Wen Shuqiao.

Just then, Wen Shuqiao hugged him back again.

She placed one hand on his back and the other on the back of his head, patting his head as she softly asked, "What's wrong? Why are you suddenly unhappy?"

Shen Jiazhou suddenly felt a pang of sadness in his nose. He hugged her tightly again, pulled Wen Shuqiao a step closer to him, and gently rubbed his face against her shoulder.

He whispered, "I'm not unhappy."

He seemed to be in control, but his tall frame looked more like a wronged dog, trying his best to whine to its owner.

Wen Shuqiao lowered her hand from his head, tilted her head slightly, and pressed her cheek against his burning ear: "Really not?"

I'm not unhappy, so why am I behaving so strangely?

Shen Jiazhou didn't say anything, but hunched over, wanting to hold her.

Wen Shuqiao seemed to have thought of something, so she gently patted his back and said softly, "Don't keep things bottled up. Speak up. Even if I can't solve it for you, talking about it will make you feel better."

From Shen Shiyue's perspective in the story, Shen Jiazhou is a man who doesn't like to talk. In addition, it's clear from Wen Zhixia's diary that Shen Jiazhou became somewhat depressed later on.

Having spent so much time together, for whatever reason, she hoped that Shen Jiazhou would be well and live a long and healthy life.

Shen Jiazhou didn't know how much he had taken in, he just mumbled an "Mmm": "You helped me solve a lot... Shuqiao, I'm really happy. It was when I saw you that I suddenly understood some things."

Wen Shuqiao asked in confusion, "What is it?"

Shen Jiazhou straightened up and removed his arms from Wen Shuqiao's waist. He took a step back, his expression much more relaxed. In the dim light, you could see the smile on his face, and his eyes were bright, showing a youthful spirit.

Wen Shuqiao looked at him, paused for a moment, and then quickly looked away.

Shen Jiazhou's eyes and attention were always on her, and he naturally noticed her unnatural, evasive gaze.

He chuckled softly, prompting Wen Shuqiao to look at him again: "What are you laughing at?"

Shen Jiazhou crossed his arms, bent down, and pressed his face against Wen Shuqiao's. His eyes crinkled as he glanced at the small mole at the corner of her eye before asking, "Am I pretty?"

What's so funny about that?

Wen Shuqiao honestly replied, "It looks good."

Shen Jiazhou struggled to suppress the urge to smile and continued, "Then why don't you look at me?"

"I saw it..." Wen Shuqiao said, but still tried to turn her face away.

But if she leaned to one side, Shen Jiazhou would lean to the other side as well, clearly intending for her to keep a close eye on him.

Even the most oblivious person would sense something was amiss.

Wen Shuqiao looked at him, opened her mouth, and said somewhat hesitantly, "It's late, you should rest."

Shen Jiazhou then straightened up and let Wen Shuqiao go: "Go to sleep, goodnight."

Wen Shuqiao nodded, but then remembered that Shen Jiazhou hadn't answered her question.

She asked, "By the way, what did you just say you'd figured out?"

Shen Jiazhou's gaze remained fixed on her. Upon hearing her question, he became less hesitant and said clearly, "I'll tell you when I'm ready."

He didn't want to do things haphazardly. He wanted to wait until he was 100% sincere before talking to Wen Shuqiao, hoping that by then... she would feel the same way about him.
