Shen Jiachen arrived at the gate of University A before seven o'clock. He drove Wen Zhixia to a popular online restaurant. After eating, they didn't go anywhere else, but strolled around the small park next door.
In summer, the park is full of flowers and mosquitoes. Shen Jiachen was wearing a gray short-sleeved shirt, and after walking a few steps, he had several bites on his arm.
Wen Zhixia said helplessly, "We can go to other places too, we don't necessarily have to go to the park."
Shen Jiachen is very fond of taking walks. Although Wen Zhixia also thinks it would be nice to enjoy the evening breeze and chat while walking, they've already come this far, so there's no need to force themselves to go for a walk.
Shen Jiachen asked, "Did you get bitten by mosquitoes?"
"No," Wen Zhixia said. "I don't attract mosquitoes much."
"I'm so envious. My brother and I have always been mosquito magnets since we were kids." Shen Jiachen sighed. "I should have worn the mosquito repellent bracelet in the car."
“We can go back now,” Wen Zhixia said. “Why insist on going to the park?”
Shen Jiachen said hesitantly, "The park is quiet, it's too noisy outside."
Wen Zhixia was persuaded by him: "Okay."
Although there were quite a few people visiting the park, everyone was quietly enjoying the breeze, fanning themselves with palm-leaf fans to keep away mosquitoes.
Just then, there was a stall in front of her that sold small trinkets. She walked over and spotted a fan that caught her eye. She paid for it quickly, opened the fan, and started fanning herself.
Shen Jiachen asked, "Why are you buying a fan?"
Wen Zhixia fanned him to drive away the mosquitoes, then slightly raised her chin at the passerby: "Fanning will reduce the number of mosquitoes."
Shen Jiachen took the fan: "Then I'll do it myself."
Although he said he would do it himself, he actually fanned Wen Zhixia.
"You don't need to fan me," Wen Zhixia said. "I bought it to keep the mosquitoes away from you."
"Take a couple of bites if you want," Shen Jiachen said. "Anyway, they're not going to carry me around."
Wen Zhixia clicked her tongue softly and walked forward with him again, the streetlights casting long shadows of the two of them.
Shen Jiachen seemed to have taken a step back and said, "Now our shadows are the same length."
Wen Zhixia looked down at the shadow on the ground and chuckled softly, "Aren't you childish?"
“Where is it childish?” Shen Jiachen stepped forward again: “Not childish at all.”
Wen Zhixia didn't want to dwell on the topic of his immaturity, so she asked, "Have you handed over all your work and everything else?"
"There's only a little left." Shen Jiachen was overjoyed: "But at least I don't have to go on business trips anymore. There are some things I can handle right here at the company."
"So, after you're done, are you planning to go back to school?" Wen Zhixia asked casually.
“I definitely won’t be going back this semester,” Shen Jiachen said. “After Jiazhou finishes his college entrance exam, I have to take him back to the US. The last time we went back was last National Day. My mom and grandma miss us a lot.”
"Oh." Wen Zhixia nodded: "It has been quite a long time. I need to go back and visit my family more often."
The two happened to walk under a lamp, and Shen Jiachen stopped again.
Wen Zhixia turned to look at him: "Why aren't you leaving again?"
Shen Jiachen looked at her, his expression sincere and earnest, and asked, "Would you like to go to the United States with me?"
"...What?" Wen Zhixia hadn't reacted yet.
Shen Jiachen then spoke up again: "Or we could say something else."
He reached into the decorative pocket on the front of his T-shirt and pulled out a diamond ring the size of a pigeon egg, which shimmered with iridescent colors under the streetlights.
Wen Zhixia was dumbfounded. What kind of development was this?
Why did you just pull out a diamond ring?
Shen Jiachen suddenly knelt down on both knees, but after only a few seconds, he hurriedly said, "Sorry, I was a little nervous, I knelt in the wrong place."
He quickly propped himself up on one leg, kneeling on the ground: "Will you be my girlfriend?"
The whole thing only lasted a few dozen seconds, but it completely left Wen Zhixia speechless.
Shen Jiachen looked at Wen Zhixia's somewhat dazed face and raised his voice slightly: "You're willing...!"
"I heard it." Wen Zhixia snapped out of her daze and quickly repeated, "I heard it."
Shen Jiachen's eyes lit up, and the corners of his mouth turned up. He was overjoyed: "It's okay if you hear me. I can ask you many times, will you be my girlfriend?"
Wen Zhixia looked at the diamond ring he was gently holding on his finger and said, "You give a diamond ring to confess your feelings, so what will you give me in the future?"
Shen Jiachen beamed with joy: "There are so many good things in the world, I can't possibly give them all away."
He extended his hand further forward, his eyes shining as he looked at her.
Wen Zhixia reached out her hand, but pushed his ring back: "I don't want your ring."
Before Shen Jiachen's expression could change, he heard Wen Zhixia say, "But I agree to be your girlfriend."
She took the opportunity to grab Shen Jiachen's wrist and pulled him up: "Don't kneel, get up."
Shen Jiachen hadn't even recovered from the huge surprise when Wen Zhixia pulled him up in a daze. He slowly looked down at Wen Zhixia and couldn't help but laugh, but after a few seconds, he tried to hold it in, but he couldn't. He just grinned foolishly, showing his teeth, and his eyes were almost slits.
Wen Zhixia looked at him and said, "Why are you smiling like an idiot?"
She tried to let go of Shen Jiachen's hand, but before she could, Shen Jiachen grabbed it and pulled her into his arms.
Shen Jiachen buried his face in the crook of her shoulder, his arms tightening around her, and murmured, "Happy."
