Side Story 2 - The Child

Xu Zhengxi faced a dilemma the year she took the college entrance examination.

His maternal grandfather sent him to Peking University, where he planned for both his undergraduate and master's degrees in international political economy. He also paved the way for his future career path.

But he didn't want to leave Lingnan, simply because he was worried about Xu Zhe.

After living with the Xu family for two years, the six-year-old child went to primary school in the blink of an eye, and was only eight years old.

Although her face was no longer sallow and she had gained a lot of weight, her personality had become a bit more cheerful, and she was no longer timid in front of Xu Zhengxi.

However, the grandfather is old and doesn't have much energy to care for the child. Moreover, raising Xu Zhe was not for him to raise a child in the first place.

Xu Zhengxi could imagine that if he left Lingnan to study in Beidu, his child would be bullied to death by those two illegitimate children.

"Brother, are the college entrance exam results coming out today?" Xu Zhe's little head peeked out from behind the desk.

Xu Zhengxi couldn't help but laugh. He didn't know when the kid had been hiding there. Only Xu Zhe dared to come and go freely in his room.

"They're out."

"Huh?" Xu Zhe ran over from the other side of the desk, stood next to Xu Zhengxi, and craned his neck to look at the computer screen.

"There's nothing to see." Xu Zhengxi turned off the computer, casually opening the cap of his fountain pen, looking preoccupied.

"I don't even need to look to know that my brother will definitely be number one again!" Xu Zhe was incredibly proud. Not being number one didn't stop her from being proud at all.

Xu Zhengxi sighed almost imperceptibly. Indeed, there was no need to look to know who was number one, but Beidu was really far from Lingnan.

One in the south, one in the north, what will happen to the children?

In the final stage of filling out college applications, it was his uncle Pei Xun who gave him advice, which finally put Xu Zhengxi's worries aside and allowed him to apply to Beidu University.

Pei Xun first helped ruin two of the Xu family's business deals, leaving both Old Master Xu and Xu Shixin furious that the gold they had almost obtained had flown away.

Just as Old Master Xu was feeling troubled, Xu Zhengxi suggested that they find the fortune teller who had previously told his fortune to predict whether it would be auspicious or inauspicious.

Grandpa Xu asked in bewilderment, "Didn't you not believe in these things?"

Before adopting Xu Zhe, this grandson opposed his decision, saying he was feudal and superstitious. How come he's now asking him to do a fortune telling?

Xu Zhengxi pretended to be indifferent: "Since we can't find the problem, it's not a bad idea to believe in metaphysics."

The sorcerer was soon invited to the house.

After a series of questions, observations, and calculations, the sorcerer finally spoke:

“Master Xu, since your family has a child with the destiny of a Pixiu, you should treat him well. Don’t even mention raising him like a phoenix; at the very least, you should provide him with fine clothes, food, love, and respect.”

"Just like the mythical beast Pixiu, you have to feed it gold and silver treasures, pamper it and respect it, in order for it to bring wealth and good fortune to its master. Otherwise, if the beast loses its mind, it will not be able to play its role."

After hearing this, Old Master Xu looked directly at Xu Shixin.

The sorcerer's meaning was clear: the Xu family had mistreated Xu Zhe.

He rarely interfered in family matters, so Xu Zhe's mistreatment must be related to his son and new daughter-in-law.

"Master, I understand." Old Master Xu instructed his son, "Warn your mistress and her two illegitimate children to treat Xu Zhe with utmost respect, or they'll all be kicked out!"

Xu Shixin thought the old man was confused; he treated his own grandson worse than an orphan girl. But he did believe the sorcerer to some extent, and given the recent inexplicable setbacks in his business, he figured he might as well believe it was true.

With the old man's support, Xu Zhengxi finally felt at ease and set off north to follow the path paved for him by his maternal grandfather.

Every year during the Spring Festival, he would go back to the Xu family home to spend the New Year with his grandfather and Xu Zhe.

Watching her grow taller, her face mature, and her figure gradually change year by year is like watching a seedling you planted grow into a beautiful sapling, which you see every year.

Until my grandfather passed away.

Xu Zhengxi was on a business trip at the time. After receiving the news, he rushed back to Lingnan, but it was already the next day.

He entered the Xu residence and began searching for the child, but he couldn't find him in the bedroom or the living room. So, he went to the mourning hall.

As soon as I walked into the backyard, I saw a white figure fall from the window sill of the mourning hall.

He was numb from head to toe. He had thought the worst-case scenario was being bullied by those two illegitimate children, but reality was far more terrifying than he had imagined!

Xu Zhengxi walked towards the blood-stained child on the grass, heard her pitiful cries, and saw her bruised and swollen face.

Fear filled her eyes; her once clear almond-shaped eyes were now filled with shatter and darkness.

She seemed to have forgotten who he was. Seeing him didn't bring her any sense of relief or security; instead, she grabbed his trouser leg and begged him to take her away.

How could he not take her with him?

She doesn't need to beg!

Xu Zhengxi suppressed her heartache and anger, picked up the child from the ground, and took her away.

They traveled far to the northern capital, leaving behind the filth and corruption of Lingnan.

From that time on, the Xu family's business declined steadily.

He was very busy when he first took office in Beidu. He was so busy every day that he barely had time to breathe.

He hired a therapist for Xu Zhe and had her housekeeper, Zhou, and Aunt Lin, who had watched her grow up, accompany her every day. But he knew that her quiet and normal appearance was just a facade. Every night after falling asleep, she was plagued by nightmares.

So Xu Zhengxi tried his best to finish work before 10 p.m. so he could go home and stay by her bedside, comfort her when she had nightmares, and accompany her through the dark nights tormented by fear.

Later, the child gradually stopped having nightmares and adapted to life in Beidu.

Xu Zhengxi was relieved to go on his business trip without having to stay in her room every night.

Hsu Che is very adaptable and independent. Even when Hsu Cheng-hsi was away on business for two months, she was still able to study and sleep well in Taipei.

On one occasion, Xu Zhengxi saw her transcript and unintentionally mentioned that her score was not high enough to get into Beidu University.

He didn't care at all about her test scores or which university she could get into. Her life trauma had only just begun to heal, so how could he bear to be strict with her?

I never expected the child to be so determined. He found a tutor himself and managed to raise his grades to the top of the grade.

Xu Zhengxi was surprised and delighted; this indomitable spirit was just like his!

But later, everything seemed to develop in a direction beyond his control.

Does your child have a close male classmate, or is he considered the "golden couple" by teachers and students at school?!

Xu Zhengxi was furious when he heard the news! Xu Zhe's affairs, whether at home or at school, were regularly reported to him by people.

Upon hearing the name "golden boy and jade girl," he became so angry that he smashed the antique lamp on the table without regard for his image.

From that day on, he strictly disciplined his child, forbidding her from wandering around outside after school and arranging for her to attend various classes during holidays.

But it was still impossible to completely prevent it, so there was the drunken incident at the senior year graduation banquet, and that scoundrel Qin Yuyang took advantage of the situation to kiss her!

Fortunately, he arrived in time; otherwise, Qin Yuyang would not have survived until the start of his freshman year.

On the child's birthday, he finally became an adult.

He had prepared a gift long ago, intending to give it to her on her birthday—a pink conch bead, as delicate and lovely as she was.

Before returning home, I heard a report that the child had gone out with Qin Yuyang again and even celebrated his birthday first!

Xu Zhengxi could no longer control himself and, emboldened by alcohol, struck first!

Although his methods were not honorable, he was very fortunate that the child grew up and became his.

It can be used for a lifetime, to protect you by my side.
