Chapter 18

People around cast curious glances at her, and Fu Yanzhou let her go.

Min Xi forced back her tears, took the wine glass that Fu Yanzhou had snatched away from her and continued to taste the wine.

Fu Yanzhou knew her alcohol tolerance and thought one glass was enough. He advised her, "Don't drink this one. You'll feel uncomfortable if you drink too much."

"It's okay." When the rim of the cup touched his lips, Min Xi said, "Thank you for your concern."

Her voice was impeccably polite, but Fu Yanzhou was not used to her being so distant.

He kept staring at her. Min Xi sensed it, took a sip of wine, tilted her head and asked him, "Is there something wrong?"

Fu Yanzhou suddenly felt that she was a stranger: "Don't speak in that tone."

Min Xi looked at him, wanting to say something but stopping herself. Not wanting to argue anymore, she turned to look at the stage.

The resident singer hadn't finished his shift yet, so he repeated the song she had ordered.

"What time do they get off work? Can their throats withstand singing for so long?" Min Xi asked the bartender.

Bartender: "I usually leave work early. The song I sang later was for you. I hope you feel better."

"Tell them thank you for me."

"good."

Min Xi drank the wine in the glass in one gulp, and before leaving he paid for the singing session later.

Walking out of the bar, Fu Yanzhou looked back at the name of the bar.

Min Xi looked for her car everywhere, but it was nowhere to be found. She stood there, drunken and wondering if she had remembered the parking spot wrong.

Fu Yanzhou walked over and said, "I asked the driver to drive back. Take my car."

Min Xi didn't say anything.

Fu Yanzhou's patience was surprisingly good tonight, and there was no sign of it running out so far. He then suggested: "If you don't want to take my car, I'll take a taxi with you."

It was the middle of the night and Min Xi didn't want to bother anymore, so he walked straight to his car.

Fu Yanzhou unlocked the car and walked a few steps to the driver's seat. He sent everyone away in advance and drove the car himself.

Min Xi didn't sit in the passenger seat, but opened the back door and got in.

Fu Yanzhou stared at the closed back door for a few seconds and then opened the driver's door.

The car slowly drove out of the parking lot. Fu Yanzhou looked at Min Xi in the rearview mirror. She was sitting right behind him, and her view was blocked by the back of the chair, so he couldn't see anything.

We've had cold wars before, but never like tonight. I couldn't coax her no matter what I did.

"You can quarrel with me in the future, but don't mention separation." His voice was loud enough for her to hear.

Min Xi didn't respond.

I felt tired and sleepy, and the liquor was in my head, so I leaned back in my seat and closed my eyes.

While waiting for the traffic light at the intersection, Fu Yanzhou turned his head to look at the back seat and saw that she had fallen asleep with her head tilted.

After passing the intersection, Fu Yanzhou pulled over. The back seat was not convenient to adjust, so she would not be comfortable sleeping and her neck might get a stiff neck.

He opened the back door and called her in a low voice: "Xixi, go to the front and sleep."

Min Xi was sleeping so deeply that no matter how we called him, he couldn't be woken up.

If the driver had always been with her, she would not drink two glasses of wine, at most one and a half glasses. But when Fu Yanzhou came, she had no psychological scruples and drank both glasses of wine.

Fu Yanzhou carried her to the passenger seat, covered her with his suit, adjusted the seat and fastened the seat belt.

When we got downstairs to the apartment building, he carried her upstairs.

The white shirt in front of him was stained with lipstick of varying shades.

He carried her all the way home. When she heard the door closing, Min Xi opened her eyes in his arms. Before she could see clearly where she was, the light in the living room was glaring, so she closed them immediately.

My head was dizzy and I was too tired to speak. I soon fell asleep from exhaustion.

Fu Yanzhou put her on the sofa in the bedroom. She smelled of alcohol and needed to take a shower, wash her hair, and remove her makeup.

He looked for a moment at how to remove the makeup, but was still at a loss.

Fu Yanzhou picked up the phone to ask his mother for help. His mother has been abroad on business recently and it is noon there now.

He first sent a message to his mother: [Mom, is it convenient for you to have a video call? 】

Xu Xiangqing replied to the video and asked his son what was wrong and why he was still awake so late.

Fu Yanzhou pointed the camera at the bottles and jars on the washstand, "Mom, what are the steps for removing makeup? How do you use these?"

"...Min Xi fell asleep and didn't remove her makeup?"

"Yeah. She had a social event tonight and was drunk. She fell asleep on the sofa and couldn't be woken up."

Xu Xiangqing carefully instructed her son, repeated the steps of makeup removal twice, and told him in detail how to use each skin care product. Fu Yanzhou took notes.

"Remove Min Xi's makeup a few more times, wash her hair a few more times, and the feelings will come."

"If it were as easy as you say, you and my dad wouldn't have been married for more than ten years without any feelings for each other."

Xu Xiangqing refused to admit it: "Who said that? You were only a few years old at that time, you didn't understand anything." The denial was too obvious, so she tried to make up for it: "Isn't your father and I on good terms now?"

"It's fine now." Fu Yanzhou's call to his mother to ask for advice on how to remove makeup was just an excuse. He really wanted to ask his mother how to deal with marital conflicts.

"By the way, every time my dad made you angry, how did you make peace with him later?"

Xu Xiangqing had a keen intuition: "Did you have a fight?"

“I guess so.”

"There is no secret to reconciliation. Sometimes I ignore your father for a few days, and he will take the initiative to say nice things. When I am no longer angry and feel better, I will forgive him and not hold it against him."

Xu Xiangqing suddenly realized: "Did Min Xi really drink too much at the social event?"

Fu Yanzhou remained calm: "Yeah. The quarrel happened a few days ago."

Xu Xiangqing was about to speak when his secretary knocked on the door and pointed at his watch.

Xu Xiangqing nodded to show that she understood, and said to her son, "Mom is busy. If you have any questions, please leave me a message and I will get back to you in the evening."

After hanging up the phone, Fu Yanzhou filled the constant temperature bathtub with water and put makeup remover, facial cleanser and shampoo on the bathtub shelf. It was the first time in his life that he served someone.

When Min Xi was put into the bathtub, she regained consciousness briefly. When she heard Fu Yanzhou say he was going to wash her hair, she lay on the bath pillow with her eyes closed and continued to sleep.

Fu Yanzhou removed her makeup first. Even though he knew the steps, he was still flustered as it was his first time doing such a thing. He applied the cleansing oil evenly, then pulled over the shower head and turned it to gentle mode. He blocked half of the shower head with the back of his hand before rinsing Min Xi's face.

He was so busy washing that he neglected one thing: the muddy water that came down flowed back into the bathtub...

If Min Xi knew that the face washing water got into the bath water, he would definitely find fault with him.

After washing her face and hair, Fu Yanzhou changed the water tank again.

The front of his shirt was soaked and his black trousers were splashed with shampoo foam.

While she was taking a bath, Fu Yanzhou took a hair dryer to blow her hair, and tied it up casually after it was dry.

After more than an hour of tossing and turning, Min Xi's drunkenness was mostly gone.

Fu Yanzhou asked her: "Can you brush your teeth yourself?"

Min Xi was half asleep and half awake, and his consciousness was not very clear, but he could understand what he said and said "hmm".

After taking a bath and brushing her teeth, Fu Yanzhou carried her back to bed.

Min Xi was still angry subconsciously, so he turned over and slept with his back to him.

Fu Yanzhou pulled the quilt over her and covered her up, unable to do anything with her.

The next day, at noon, Min Xi had not yet woken up.

Fu Yanzhou got up after only a few hours of sleep and was making coffee when Chu Yi called him.

Chu Yi had just woken up and saw the chat records in the class group. He realized that Fu Yanzhou did not go to Zhu Youran’s wedding yesterday, and Secretary Bai went on his behalf.

Everyone thought that given Zhu Youran’s popularity and influence in the class, Fu Yanzhou would definitely go.

"Why didn't you go?"

"Something's going on."

Fu Yanzhou turned on the speakerphone, put his phone on the kitchen counter, and poured coffee into a cup.

"What about my blessing?"

"I've told Secretary Bai."

"Just bring the blessings." Chu Yi lit a cigarette. As the wedding went on, he was no longer as painful as he was last night.

Exhaling smoke, he said to Fu Yanzhou: "You go ahead and do your work. I'll go out and find someone."

Let's see if they can find each other by destiny. I wonder if she will divorce her husband. He shouldn't have called her stupid last night. Sometimes a word from an outsider can have a big impact on the person involved, and he will fall into self-doubt.

After hanging up the phone, Fu Yanzhou went to the study with coffee and deliberately passed by the bedroom door. Min Xi was still asleep.

He didn't open his mailbox yesterday and there were a pile of emails, so he used the computer in the study to handle his work.

He opened the drawer to take out his glasses and his eyes fixed on it.

There were two more packs of cigarettes in the drawer, one on the glasses case and one slanted next to it.

Fu Yanzhou was very sure that when he wanted to smoke on his birthday night, he searched all the drawers but found no cigarettes. They would not appear out of thin air, and it looked like the two packs of cigarettes were thrown into the drawer out of anger.

On Friday night, Min Xi specifically asked him why he wasn't reading in the study. She must have been testing whether he had seen the cigarettes she bought for him.

He made her angry yesterday, so she simply put the cigarette away and didn't give it to him.

She was still angry, so he put the cigarettes away and didn't move them.

--

Min Xi slept until 11:40 before waking up. She felt a slight headache and stared at the ceiling, trying to piece together what happened last night. She only remembered that Fu Yanzhou went to the bar to find her, but she lost track of what happened after they got home.

I have no recollection of how she washed her hair, took a bath, or removed her makeup.

I picked up a strand of hair and put it to my nose and smelled it. There was a faint scent of shampoo.

Her head hurts so much thinking about it that she can't recall the process of Fu Yanzhou washing her hair, not even a fragment.

Min Xi got up, washed, and went to the kitchen to make breakfast.

She heated up the milk, didn’t fry eggs since she didn’t want to, and toasted a few slices of toast. This was the only breakfast she knew how to make.

She had just sat down at the dining table when Fu Yanzhou came over from the study. He knew only a limited number of breakfast dishes, so he took out an egg from the refrigerator and fried her a soft-boiled egg.

"Eat something first. Lunch will be delivered in an hour." He put the fried eggs in front of her.

"Thank you." Min Xi looked at the not-so-well-fried egg on the plate, but his eyes fell squarely on the ring finger of his left hand.

No ring.

After staring for two or three seconds, she looked away and ate breakfast.

Fu Yanzhou sat down calmly, picked up the cup of water on the table and drank.

After a while, he put down his glass, stood up and left the restaurant.

Min Xi was eating her own breakfast and didn't pay attention to where he went. After finishing two slices of toast, Fu Yanzhou returned to the restaurant and sat down again, this time sitting on the chair next to her. She caught a glimpse of a ring on his hand from the corner of her eye.

Fu Yanzhou told her: "My flight back to Beijing is at nine in the evening."

"Oh." Min Xi looked away from his hand.

It was too late, and Fu Yanzhou didn't plan to let her take him to the airport.

While eating, Min Xi received a call from Min Ting.

She put down the milk and answered the phone: "Hello, brother."

"Still working overtime?"

"No. I'm eating." Finally, she added, "With Fu Yanzhou."

Hearing his name being called, Fu Yanzhou looked up.

"It's only natural for him to come and see you. There's no need to emphasize it."

"…I just said it casually."

Min Ting called to tell her sister that someone was going to the bar to look for her today.

"Who's looking for me?"

"I don't know him. He said he listened to the song you ordered last night. I wonder how you feel now."

Min Xi still remembered clearly what happened in the bar last night. There was no need to have any deep feelings between two strangers of the opposite sex who had only met once.

"I'm fine now. I'm grateful for his concern and I hope he can get out of this misery soon. That's all."

Min Ting understood what his sister meant, so he hung up the phone and arranged for someone to take care of the matter.

"Who do you wish to be freed from suffering soon?" Fu Yanzhou originally wanted to ask the previous question, who cares about her, but when the words came to his lips, he felt it was inappropriate.

Min Xi: "I met a lovelorn person at the bar."

Hearing that it was a stranger, Fu Yanzhou said nothing more.

Min Xi put down his phone and ate the fried egg.

When I just woke up, I didn’t want to eat greasy fried eggs, but now I taste it when I bite it.

"Are you busy this afternoon?" Fu Yanzhou broke the brief silence.

She chewed an omelette slowly and asked, "What's the matter?"

Fu Yanzhou: "If you're not busy, go choose a diamond ring."

He took out his cell phone and planned to make an appointment to go to the flagship store.

Min Xi didn't get angry, and said calmly: "Don't choose yet, let's decide after I get back from my business trip."

I'm in a bad mood right now, which affects my aesthetic taste in choosing a ring.

Fu Yanzhou nodded: "That's fine."

She was still in a very low mood, he could sense it.

A moment of silence.

He took the initiative to ease the situation: "You said last night that you didn't want to have a cold war with me, and I feel the same way."

Min Xi was silent for a moment, then turned to look at him.

Fu Yanzhou also looked at her: "I was wrong about what happened yesterday. From now on, I will put all your requests first."
