Chapter 82 Bats

With a crackling sound, the fire went out, and the last piece of wood in the campfire was burned out.

Xu Kun and the others hadn't returned yet, so Gu Mian dusted herself off and got up, deciding not to wait inside any longer.

Of course, before leaving the cave, Gu Mian didn't forget to put the energy protection bracelet on her wrist and then press the round button in the middle of the bracelet.

Instantly, a transparent protective shield appeared around her.

I was too careless yesterday and forgot to put on the bracelet beforehand, otherwise I wouldn't have been bitten by the mutated snake.

It was getting late. As soon as Gu Mian stepped out of the cave, she felt a wave of heat hit her face.

I drank half a bottle of mineral water in one go to quench my thirst, and used the remaining half to wash up.

After finishing breakfast, Xu Kun and the others still hadn't returned, and Gu Mian became a little impatient.

Opening the group chat with the three of them, Gu Mian asked, "Where did you guys go? What time is it and you're still not back?"

After waiting for ten minutes without receiving a reply, Gu Mian grew impatient and left a message before going out to explore on her own.

The sun was blazing today. Gu Mian wandered around outside under the scorching sun for half a day, feeling exhausted and thirsty, but she didn't encounter a single pollutant.

Touching her sunburnt cheeks, pulling her sweaty bangs back, Gu Mian exhaled a breath of stale air and plopped down in the shade of a tree.

It was too hot, she just couldn't stand it.

Luckily, she still had some leftover ice cream in her backpack, which finally came in handy.

The ice cream wasn't big, and Gu Mian swallowed it in just a few bites.

After finishing the ice cream, my anger subsided a bit.

The midday sun was blindingly bright, making it really unsuitable to run around outside.

Gu Mian curled up under the tree roots, closed her eyes slightly, and planned to go out and take a look when it wasn't so hot anymore.

Suddenly, a crackling sound came from beside my ears. I opened my eyes in confusion and felt a chill run down my spine.

A swarm of bats was attacking her protective shield, so densely packed that it almost completely covered it.

"Ugh...how disgusting!"

Provoked, Gu Mian took out her staff and launched a series of attacks, wiping out the entire swarm of bats in one fell swoop.

[Defeat a Tier 1 contaminant to gain 10 points.]

[Defeat a Tier 1 pollutant to gain 8 points.]

[Defeat a Tier 1 pollutant to gain 7 points.]

...

Killing a Tier 1 pollutant only earns 1 point; Gu Mian only earned 80 points after wiping out the entire bat swarm.

The points are far too few; after all that effort, I can't even match a single second-order pollutant.

Looking into the shadows deep in the woods, Gu Mian seemed lost in thought, wondering if there were still any bats left to be killed.

...

More than an hour later, Gu Mian looked at the bat nest that she had cleared out with satisfaction.

Now she no longer has to worry about that thing suddenly flying out to attack her and disgust her.

Now that the bat problem was solved, Gu Mian decided not to leave. She hid in the shade and idly opened the chat channel.

"I encountered some big rats, they were incredibly fierce, so I killed them all."

"Well done! I just ran into a few crows, wow! These crows are bigger than eagles. Luckily I had my teammates, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to beat them!"

"Waaaaah, I encountered two mutated wolves. Although I managed to kill them, my leg was bitten..."

The bleeding just won't stop. Does anyone have any wound medicine? I'll trade him my purification potion for it!

"Why is it that you all keep encountering pollutants or mutated beasts? I've been here for two days and haven't even run into a single thing that can breathe..."

"Same as above, we haven't encountered a single pollutant yet. It looks like we're definitely going to be at the bottom of the standings."

"It's already been abandoned. It'll be turned into pollutants sooner or later anyway, so there's no need to look for pollutants to farm points now."

"Don't be so desperate, upstairs! It's not the last day yet, there might still be a chance if you give it your all!"

"So what? Are you sure there will only be one round of points-based competition? Even if you're lucky enough not to be converted this time, will you be so lucky next time?"

The chat channel fell silent instantly, and Gu Mian's heart sank at those words.

What that person said was indeed correct; the bottom 20% of players in the total points ranking of a single points competition were directly converted into polluters.

If we have to hold these point-based tournaments a few more times, there will probably be no players left, and they'll all be newly converted polluters.

Gu Mian felt a little depressed for a moment, but no matter what, since she was still living as a human being, she certainly wouldn't abandon her rationality and turn into a monster.

Xu Kun: "Oh dear, I'm so sorry, little sister. Lao Bai and I accidentally entered a dungeon and just finished killing the monsters and came out."

In the group chat, a text message from Xu Kun interrupted Gu Mian's chaotic thoughts.

Gu Mian grasped the key point: "What instance?"

Is it possible to enter a dungeon and grind monsters on this island?

Xu Kun explained, "It's a dungeon full of Tier 1 pollutants. The monsters just keep spawning. They're not very strong, but they're incredibly annoying."

A thought suddenly flashed through her mind. Gu Mian ignored Xu Kun and switched to the chat channel: "Has anyone been into the monster-hunting dungeon?"

The question was abrupt and seemingly unrelated, but someone understood: "Hey, I just came out of a dungeon and farmed a bunch of Tier 1 pollutants."

Gu Mian had some guesses in her mind and continued to ask, "Are there many people entering the dungeon?"

Before anyone could reply, someone impatiently asked, "What riddle are you guys solving? What dungeon? What do you mean by 'grinding monsters'?"

"Yes! You should explain yourselves more clearly, instead of being riddles."

"I also went into a dungeon last night, otherwise there weren't many monsters, and I only got a dozen or so points before leaving."

"I didn't go into the instance, but my friend did, and he's still inside."

...

It seems that quite a few players have indeed accidentally entered the dungeon, and once inside, they can only leave after defeating all the monsters in the dungeon.

Her thoughts became more certain, but Gu Mian organized her words and still spoke in an uncertain tone:

"Is it possible that the island has very little pollution because people go into dungeons to grind monsters?"

"Ah... that does seem possible? Otherwise, how do you explain the fact that we hardly encounter any pollutants on the island?"

"What evidence do you have? Or is this conclusion just your own guess?"

"I heard from those people upstairs that once you enter a dungeon, you can't leave until you kill all the monsters inside."

"You're not planning to lure us in, make us die in the dungeon, and then sit back and reap the benefits outside, are you?"

Gu Mian: "..."

This person probably has paranoia.

I'm speechless, thank you!

Gu Mian narrowed her eyes and replied bluntly, "I'm just offering a conjecture. Believe it or not, it's up to you. I believe that as an adult, you should have your own judgment, right?"

After sending the message, Gu Mian closed the chat window.

She can only be responsible for her own life. At most, she can offer a well-intentioned reminder. Whether others believe her or not is none of her business.
