Reunion at the Pier
Perhaps because she was thinking of the past, Wu Siqi felt her eyes a little sore. The subway arrived at the station, but she did not get off and let the sardine can take her away.
The final stop was the city's old pier, and passengers were asked to get off in an orderly manner. Not wanting to go home very much, she did not take the return car, but followed the crowd to the river.
The old wharf no longer performs its original function and has been transformed into a creative park. On weekday evenings, a few college students come here to play.
Wu Siqi leaned on the railing, letting the night wind blow. She looked up at the starry sky and thought -
I am just an insignificant person in this vast universe, why did you choose me?
She hated it, hesitated, struggled, and finally lay down, letting fate whip her mercilessly. She had no other choice but to just let it go and enjoy it.
There were quite a few people walking their dogs on the pier, and it seemed that the dogs' socialization was not going well. They kept barking, mixed with the sound of people training their dogs, which drew her attention away. Two white dogs were pulling on their leashes and cursing at each other, and their owners were apologizing to each other.
She stood and watched for a moment, watching them pull the puppy away, then move closer to chat, and finally open their phones to exchange contact information. She was witnessing an encounter.
She turned on her phone and it was 20:32. She had turned on airplane mode and there wasn't even a single message from the app.
With his back against the railing, Wu Siqi squatted down and hugged himself.
Mom, I'm so tired being alone.
The evening breeze blew, and Wu Siqi, buried in the darkness, vaguely felt something licking the back of her hand. She raised her head and saw the Shiba Inu's distinctive smile.
A little Shiba Inu was being led by a rope. Looking along the rope, Wu Siqi's pupils shrank.
I haven't seen this person for many years. He has changed a lot. He has become more mature and more beautiful. Why is he still secretly wearing insoles to increase his height? Dai Xiaoxing.
Dai Xiaoxing: "Long time no see."
Wu Siqi was speechless. He felt too embarrassed now. The person he had just recalled suddenly walked out of his memory, as unreal as a dream.
Dai Xiaoxing laughed at himself: "Don't you remember me? I am Dai Xiaoxing."
Wu Siqi: "I know."
Dai Xiaoxing held the dog leash in one hand and stretched out the other hand, handing it to her, trying to pull her up.
Without complying with her wishes, Wu Siqi supported himself on his thighs with his hands and used the force to stand up.
Dai Xiaoxing withdrew his sentimental hand in a huff and put one hand in his pocket. "I didn't expect to see you here. I heard you changed your career a few years ago."
"Well, now let's work on advertising planning." Wu Siqi secretly used the railing to gain leverage and calm himself down.
The little Shiba Inu kept whining and rubbing against Wu Siqi's trouser legs. Dai Xiaoxing shortened the leash and pulled the dog back to his side. "I'm sorry, Chuyi is a bit naughty."
"It's okay." Wu Siqi lowered his head and didn't look at her.
Dai Xiaoxing: "How are you lately? You look much thinner than before."
Wu Siqi: "Well, I'm fine. Maybe I've lost some weight, so I didn't notice it much." Her voice was light and her attitude was aloof.
"People in the advertising industry must often have to work overtime. Is it hard?" Dai Xiaoxing's puppy whined in dissatisfaction. She loosened the rope a little, and the little Shiba Inu rubbed against Wu Siqi's trouser leg again.
Dai Xiaoxing: "It seems that Chuyi likes you very much." Like me, she didn't say the rest.
Dai Xiaoxing: "You are still so popular with small animals."
The wind by the river was very cool. Wu Siqi put her hands in her pockets and said "hmm". "It's okay. There is no job that doesn't require overtime nowadays." She didn't want to talk to her about the latter topic.
"Working overtime for a career you love and working overtime for a job that's just for the sake of getting by are two different things." Dai Xiaoxing stared at the person in front of him, just as indifferent as before. He didn't look at him directly, avoided his gaze, and was as stubborn as a donkey.
Wu Siqi: "It's just work, it's the same thing."
Dai Xiaoxing took a half step forward, making the already close distance even closer. She became more aggressive, "Really? Wu Siqi, don't fool yourself."
Wu Siqi remained motionless: "I don't need to explain anything to you."
She moved to the side to avoid Dai Xiaoxing.
Dai Xiaoxing: "Do you believe in fate so much that you're willing to give up on your dreams?"
"right."
Wu Siqi raised his eyes and said firmly.
The other person's expression was equally solemn. The woman, who was nearly thirty years old, had much more aura than before. She was no longer as easily shattered as before when she was pushed away.
Dai Xiaoxing frowned: "You are being superstitious."
Pushing aside the hair messed up by the night wind, Wu Siqi turned and left, leaving behind a sentence: "Say whatever you like."
Wu Siqi walked away with his arms folded, the wind leaving traces on his white shirt. His thin figure was like a lonely bird with its wings spread in the starry sky. Dai Xiaoxing stayed where she was, the wind blowing her high ponytail gently.
She tried to weave a warm nest for the lonely bird, but the bird was afraid that the thorns on its body would hurt others, so it left her and flew away alone.
During college, Dai Xiaoxing watched her study hard in the library, forgetting to eat and sleep. She devoted herself to study day after day, and gradually understood how devout her love for veterinary medicine was.
She still remembers that during her freshman year, she was preparing for exams during exam week and cramming in the library. She got stuck on a knowledge point in pathology and couldn't recite it fluently. At that age when people loved to play the most, everyone's attitude towards learning was "60 points is great".
But Wu Siqi, who was sitting next to her, was able to tell her in detail how to break down and understand this knowledge point.
That was their first meeting, and her patient voice still echoes today.
Looking away, Dai Xiaoxing walked in the opposite direction with the dog.
The dock was still bustling, after all, nothing had happened.
The subway station on the return journey was empty. It was far away from the starting station in the city center and there were not even a few staff members. The carriage rumbled on the tracks, making Wu Siqi drowsy.
Today was just an ordinary working day. Wu Siqi simply attributed the day to himself as he walked out of the subway with his bag.
It was raining again, a disgusting rainy day. Fortunately, she brought an umbrella today. She took out a folding umbrella from her bag and opened it. The rain was misty, not heavy, but it was enough to make people uncomfortable when it fell on their bodies.
When she got home, the water from her heels soaked her trouser legs. She opened the umbrella and put it on the balcony. She looked back and saw the cat lying on the sofa, looking at her lazily. It looked up at her, then lowered its head to rest on its crossed paws, half-closed its eyes as if it was in a bad mood.
Wu Siqi found it strange. This cat was very clingy, and this was the first time it had ignored her like this.
She opened her mouth to call it, but was speechless, then she realized that she seemed to have not given it a name. However, there was no need to give it a name, because its new owner would give it a new name.
She gave up shouting. The wet feeling on her trouser legs made her nerves jump. She went back to her room, got her pajamas and went into the bathroom.
I hate rainy days the most, and I hate it today too.
Wu Siqi dried her hair with a hair dryer and turned off the airplane mode. The message notifications kept ringing. She decided not to turn them on. She would not reply to work messages after get off work and keep the uncomfortable red dot.
Putting down her phone, she turned around and found the cat, who was in a bad mood, peeking at her. When she realized she was looking over, she turned her head away as if nothing had happened.
When she went out this morning, she filled up the food and just opened the can. She didn't provoke it, did she? Cats are really hard to understand.
Wu Siqi walked over and saw the cat lying on the carpet. She half-knelt in front of it and raised her hand to touch it. Her hand touched the soft fur. She was in a rare good mood. At least it was with her at this moment.
She picked up the cat and walked back to the room. The cat struggled and didn't want to let her hold it. She said, "Be good."
She's been good again.
It was so disappointing, so disappointing. The little black cat Sheriff lay on her shoulder with his ears drooping, letting her hold him, put him on the bed, cover him with a quilt, and turn off the lights.
This person was very thin, and it felt uncomfortable when she hugged it. She turned over and found a comfortable position to curl up, but she was still angry. So today she couldn't put her paws on her, and she couldn't touch her tail. She had to turn her back to her.
Slightly damp breaths swept over him again and again, and the sleeping person unconsciously held the warmth in his arms tightly. Forget it, I forgive you.
Turning back, I rubbed my head against her neck. Was it wet?
The kitten looked up nervously. Wu Siqi was crying in her dream, and her tears flowed into the pillow, soaking a large area. The kitten rubbed her face with its paws helplessly, trying to wipe away her tears.
Its clumsy movements woke Wu Siqi up. She opened her eyes sleepily and asked, "What's wrong?" What she saw was a black mass. She raised her hand to push it away and saw a pair of bright cat's eyes.
The pillow was wet. She raised her head and saw the pillowcase covered in water in the dim moonlight. Her fingertips touched her cheek, "Why are you crying again?"
Her words were full of doubt, as if the person crying was not herself.
But she was very sleepy and didn't want to get up to change the pillowcase, so she pulled the pillow aside, stroked the cat's head soothingly, closed her eyes and fell asleep again.
All night long, those bright eyes never closed, just staring at her.
I turned off the alarm clock and the day went on like a cycle: I washed up, went to work, had a meeting to revise the plan, ordered takeout and ate it, took a twenty-minute nap, continued to have a meeting and continued to revise the plan, and the clock pointed to seven o'clock.
The company had taken on several large projects, and the office was still brightly lit. Zhang Li took the quotation sheet and sat down at Wu Siqi's workstation to discuss with her, "Which of these three companies do you think is more favorable? Give me some advice."
Taking the three quotations, Wu Siqi pushed her glasses on the bridge of her nose and carefully looked over the quotations and specific information of the three engineering teams. One of them was a company she had cooperated with before. "If I had to choose, I would choose this one." She placed the one with the highest quotation in front of Zhang Li.
Zhang Li smiled with satisfaction and asked, "Why?"
Wu Siqi: "Although the price is high, they have the most experience. And from what I know, this company has some connections up there, which can save you some hassles."
Zhang Li collected the documents and said, "I'm glad you and I agree." She stood up and asked, "Siqi, are you ready to go? Do you want to come with us?"
Wu Siqi glanced at the time on her computer, then at the to-do list on her notebook. She shook her head: "I can't leave yet. No."
"Oh, okay, bye." Zhang Li waved to her and left.
The previous project was still in its final stages, and Wu Siqi saw the message from the finance department: Money cannot be transferred into this account. Team Wu, please confirm whether the bank and name are correct.
Wu Siqi: OK, got it.
She twirled her pen. She had just said such harsh words to someone yesterday, and now she was talking about work again. It wasn't a good idea.
Another uninvited guest, "Teacher, aren't you going to get off work yet?" Xu Tingting, carrying her bag, dragged the office chair next to her workstation over and sat down.
