"I'm fine, Ah Heng. No matter what happens in the future, you must tell your sister-in-law. She will definitely protect you." Xia said in a firm tone.
"Thank you, sister-in-law." Chen Heng nodded heavily. Xia Shi changed her name from Chen Heng to Ah Heng, and she suddenly felt that the future was not so confusing anymore.
After standing outside the room for a long time, Xie Jian turned and left.
Shen Heng didn't eat much for dinner. The pickled vegetables in the bowl were said to have been stored in a clay pot for a year. Xia picked out a small piece of lard and put it in. The smell was so fragrant that she just wanted to pinch her nose. However, the nutrition of the food was not bad, but it was not necessarily good either. She still forced herself to finish a bowl of coarse grains.
It was completely dark and everyone went back to their rooms.
When Chen Heng entered the room after chatting with her sister-in-law, Xie Jian was copying a book seriously. Half of his face was illuminated by the warm oil lamp, and the other half was in the darkness. His thin face was sharply defined, like a silhouette.
After washing her face, Shen Heng sat on the bed and drafted what she was going to say in her mind. After a while, she coughed a few times to attract his attention, but Xie Jian didn't even move.
"When Li Dou was robbing people on the road, he said, 'You told me I had a thousand taels of silver on me. Xie Jian, did you tell him that on purpose?'" Chen Heng asked, but there was no need to ask at all.
Xie Jian looked at her calmly and continued copying: "Why should I tell him?"
"You've made Li Dou greedy and tried to get close to me. If I were tempted to elope with him, you could use this as leverage to pressure my father. My father, for the sake of his own reputation, would have no choice but to act as your guarantor." Shen Heng snorted coldly, "I thought this was very suspicious, so I simply played along and got these words out of Li Dou."
"You seem so smart." Xie Jian said indifferently.
Chen Heng's face flushed. "Don't look down on me. I was just hurt by my father these past two years. I was hurt so deeply that I couldn't figure it out. I'm not stupid."
Xie Jian put down the pen in his hand, turned around and looked at her suspiciously.
What's with that look? Her words were well-reasoned and could stand up to scrutiny, okay? Shen Heng straightened her back and stared back at her: "The Shen family will never be your guarantor again, so forget it."
"So you're breaking off this engagement letter just for me to see?"
"Yes, and no." Chen Heng pulled the quilt over her and whispered, "Since my parents treat me this way, there's no need for me to rush to get close to them. Let's just break it off."
"You figured it out just in time."
Chen Heng: “…” It must be timely.
"What do you want to tell me?" Xie Jian asked again.
"We don't like each other." But there was no way to ask for a divorce right now, and Xie Jian wouldn't divorce her. Firstly, the Xia family wouldn't approve, and secondly, if he divorced his wife in the current situation at the Xie family, who knows how others would criticize him. Chen Heng was also worried that Xie Jian would sacrifice her at any time. "But we can get along well. I'm a few years older than you. You can treat me as your sister, and I'll treat you as your brother. When things get better, or you find someone to spend your life with, we can divorce. How about that?"
No matter how you look at it, Xie Jian got the better deal.
I really am doing myself such a disservice.
Life is getting better? How do we know when life is getting better? Xie Jian thought for a moment and said, "Then wait until life is getting better."
"It's a deal." Chen Heng thought it would take some time to talk, but she didn't expect Xie Jian to be so straightforward.
Looking at the woman lying happily, Xie Jian thought about what she said, "After last night, Chen Heng will be reborn and become a new person." Treating her as her own sister, as her own brother? Is this her new life?
