When Grandma Wu stood in Xishang Town, a month had already passed.
First, I went to the black market to exchange some money, bought everything on the street, and even found a white jade bottle as a treasure before returning home with my bags full.
Every day, the four Huang brothers stood at the door, gazing in the direction of the village entrance. Today, it was Huang Xiaoguo and Huang Xiaomin's turn to ask, "Mom has been gone for over a month. Why hasn't she come back yet?"
"Perhaps, maybe, things weren't finished?" Huang Xiaomin's two thick eyebrows were furrowed together, looking from a distance like two caterpillars hanging on his face.
Wang Huijun and Li Jin'e had just finished cooking when they saw the two brothers sighing deeply. They exchanged a glance, their eyes showing the same helplessness.
It's fortunate that this is her own mother; if it were any other woman, Li Jin'e would have really lost her temper if her man cared about her like this.
“I’m back, I’m back!”
Suddenly, the two of them dashed off like arrows. Wang Huijun and Li Jin'e realized what was happening and hurriedly followed them.
Sure enough, I saw Old Mrs. Wu. "Mom!"
Grandma Wu was carrying large and small bags, but the mountain of packages seemed light in her hands. When Huang Xiaoguo and Huang Xiaomin took them with smiles, their expressions immediately froze.
This wasn't light at all...
Grandma Wu simply tossed the large bundle behind her onto the two of them, saying, "Want to carry it? Then carry it both. I'm tired anyway."
The two felt a sudden weight on their bodies, their legs trembled, and they were about to reach out and call out to Old Lady Wu.
Wang Huijun and Li Jin'e had already led Old Lady Wu into the courtyard. "Mom, it's just in time for dinner. My sister-in-law and I have made a lot of delicious food today. You must be exhausted from the journey. Eat more later."
Upon hearing about food, the two behind them suddenly perked up, bouncing up and struggling to walk towards their home, their legs trembling.
The road that was so short just now seems so long now.
As soon as they entered the courtyard, the two of them fell to the ground with a thud. Good heavens, what's in this bundle?
It must be food; the two of them pressed their faces against the bundle, drool practically dripping from their mouths.
"Mom, what's in that bundle? Is it food?"
Grandma Wu had just sat down, and the smile on her lips hadn't even settled when the two people asked her a question that made her freeze instantly.
These two even ask their wives how the journey was and if they were tired.
But they were quite something; they stuck the package to their faces and immediately asked if there was food inside.
Grandma Wu smiled sweetly and slapped him across the face.
Two children, Huang Xiaoguo and Huang Xiaomin, looked at Old Lady Wu with pitiful expressions, "Mom..."
During the meal, the two stood in the corner of the wall. When the others returned, they saw each other and exchanged glances.
After scanning the area, Huang Xiaoqiang was not found. Huang Xiaofu explained, "Xiaoqiang passed the exam and has been driving around with the village secretary's son for the past two weeks."
Grandma Wu nodded; she seemed to have heard this mentioned before.
Gu Qing wasn't in the mood to pay attention to these things. She suppressed her excitement and waited for Grandma Wu to rest for the night before asking her about it the next day.
Unexpectedly, that very evening, Grandma Wu gave her a letter. "This is from your parents." She paused for a moment, then added, "They seem to be in good spirits, so don't worry."
If you have a good physical foundation and can hold on for another ten years or so, perhaps better days are yet to come.
However, Grandma Wu did not say these words.
Who can say for sure what will happen ten years from now?
Life in Shanyao Village is peaceful and fulfilling, and Grandma Wu's pig farming business is getting better year by year.
By 1977, the communal dining system had been abolished for more than a decade. The village party secretary looked at his piglets and sighed, "No matter how I raise these pigs, they are still a bit different from those raised by Wu Mingxia."
"What's the difference?" Gou Cuifen poured the prepared pig feed into the trough, examining it carefully. "There's no change, it's just smaller and thinner..."
By the end, his voice was almost gone.
"Who knew that raising them to adulthood would be easy, but getting them to be fat and healthy would be so difficult?"
The village secretary glanced speechlessly at his wife. "Now, every household raises pigs and chickens, but the Wu family raises them on a large scale. They supply all the pork in the town. In a few years, they'll be the first to rise to prominence in the village."
"They're already up."
Before she could finish speaking, a chubby little boy suddenly rushed out like a cannonball and grabbed her leg. "Grandma, what's up? Are you talking about Xiaobao?"
Gou Cuifen bent down, put her hands under Xiao Bao's armpits, and just as she was about to pick him up, her face stiffened. With her old body, she'd better be obedient.
"Yes, your grandpa and I were talking about how our little Bao has grown up."
Xiao Bao patted Gou Cuifen's waist obediently, "Grandma, when is Daddy coming back? I haven't seen him for almost half a month."
Speaking of Tie Niu, Gou Cuifen's eyes were filled with both longing and pride. "I called my grandma last night and said I would be back today, and I would see him by noon at the latest."
"Wah wah wah! Daddy's back! Daddy's back!"
Gou Cuifen straightened up and looked at the village secretary, "Our son is doing well too. He's now the captain of the motorcade and earns quite a bit of money a month."
“Back then, Mingxia’s youngest son was still working for him.”
The village secretary nodded. It was indeed good. It was just a pity that Tie Niu wasn't cut out for studying. Otherwise, he could have given it a shot.
"Is the government really going to reinstate the college entrance examination?"
"Seriously, I've been thinking these past few days that our Tie Niu isn't cut out for studying. Otherwise, he could have given it a shot and maybe even gotten into university. He could have been assigned a job right away and had a stable government job. It's much better than disappearing for ten days or half a month to drive a truck."
Gou Cuifen thought the sports car was pretty good, but then she paused, glancing into the house. "Didn't Tie Niu's wife mention anything about registering for the college entrance exam?"
The village party secretary was also taken aback, "No."
"Tie Niu is lucky to have married a literate wife, but I'm still uneasy. Now that the college entrance examination has been reinstated, will she be able to settle down and live with Tie Niu?"
"We already have a child, but what should we do?"
Gou Cuifen glared at him speechlessly. There have been plenty of educated youth who have escaped back to the city in recent years, not to mention now that they have a legitimate title.
The village party secretary stroked his completely white beard. "No, we all know what kind of person Xiaowen has been all these years."
Gou Cuifen didn't speak, or rather, she was uneasy and didn't know what to say.
Looking at Xiao Bao's adorable back, I felt a deep sense of worry.
On the other side of the Wu family compound, Huang Mancang, his body hunched over, was busy working back and forth in the kitchen.
Wang Huijun stood aside, feeling embarrassed, and said, "Dad, let me do it. You just got back, so you should rest."
"No need, no need. You don't know what your mother likes to eat. Besides, my cooking skills are top-notch. You all clean your stomachs and eat to your heart's content today."
