Chapter 43 Sarcasm

Marquis Yuanning breathed a sigh of relief, his expression regaining its composure. He waved his hand and said, "Enter the palace."

The main courtyard of the Prince's Mansion.

Xu Si stood at the door of the main room with lunch in his hands, smiling ingratiatingly: "My two sisters, my little darling, please, could you please take this food in for the Prince, or... or I could take it in myself? Her Majesty specifically instructed that if the Prince doesn't eat, he will be punished when he returns."

Although he was afraid that Yu Nanqing would hit him again, he was even more afraid that Su Wanyan would not give him the antidote.

With Su Wanyan around, the prince probably won't take his life.

The two maids guarding the main room door were the two personal maids that Emperor Yuanhe had assigned to Su Wanyan.

They lost track of Su Wanyan today and thought they were going to die, but unexpectedly, things took a turn for the better, and the Emperor did not pursue the matter.

Seeing that Su Wanyan had disappeared, the Emperor was not in a great hurry, which suggests that he did not really value Yu Nanqing.

They had received the message an hour earlier, instructing them to stand guard in front of the main house and wait for Marquis Yuanning to arrive, and not to allow anyone to approach during this time.

So Xu Si had been holding the lunch for quite a while, and he had even reheated it several times after it got cold.

The maid in pink scoffed, "Why is Steward Xu so loyal to a good-for-nothing? Doesn't he know we're sent by the Emperor? Bringing food to the Prince is disobeying the Emperor's orders. Do you want to die?"

They were originally palace maids, but now they were sent to the Prince's mansion as maids. It was as if they had been demoted. They were unhappy and looked down on those who originally worked in the Prince's mansion.

All the maids from the previous group have died, but Xu Si is the only one left alive.

The maid in blue couldn't help but curse, "You traitor! You really can't even tell who your real master is! How high do you think the lady you're talking about is? She's just a concubine's daughter who was sent to marry in place of the Marquis of Yuanning. You really think she's something special?"

"Don't even mention that lowly concubine's daughter. Even that prince inside, who's known as the God of War, is still a useless piece of trash. What good will it do you to send him this food? Maybe that concubine's daughter ran away from the palace because she thought he was useless and smelly. Steward Xu, don't blame me for not warning you. If you try to curry favor with that cripple inside, you won't even know how you died."

"Exactly. That illegitimate daughter went to great lengths to escape from under our noses, so she's probably not coming back. Even the Emperor doesn't care about this good-for-nothing, so why should you care about her?"

There has always been one version of Emperor Yuanhe's attitude toward Yu Nanqing, both inside and outside the palace.

What the common people don't know spreads incredibly fast in the palace, especially with so many concubines. They can easily glean his thoughts through subtle hints and Emperor Yuanhe's attitude.

After the concubines spread the word, the palace maids and eunuchs all knew about it.

Xu Si knew perfectly well what they were saying. Regardless of whether he took care of Yu Nanqing now or not, with his disabled and helpless state, he was bound to die sooner or later. He didn't know why Su Wanyan was going to such lengths to serve him.

But he had no choice but to do it.

Su Wanyan hasn't given him the antidote yet. What if Su Wanyan suddenly comes back and finds that he hasn't taken good care of him and has left him to fend for himself?

He forced a smile again, saying helplessly, "My two little darlings, you don't know this, but I'm terrified of the Empress. I don't dare to offend them at all. Please, have mercy and take this food inside. If the Empress really doesn't come back in the future, I'll be the first to come and kowtow to you and show my respect. How about that?"

He can't not come back; the poison in his body hasn't been cured yet!

Upon hearing this, the two maids exchanged a glance, then suddenly smiled and looked at Xu Si: "You're afraid, but we're not."

After saying that, the pink-clad maid reached out and pushed open the door to the main room.

Just as Xu Si was about to go in with a forced smile, he was stopped by the maid in blue. With a wicked grin, she picked up the food in Xu Si's hand and smashed it into the main room with a loud "bang."

The plate of pastries was smashed to pieces right in front of Yu Nanqing.

"Hahahaha..." The pink-clad maid covered her mouth and laughed gleefully.

Yu Nanqing lay on her side on the bed with her eyes closed, her back to the door, ignoring everything that had just happened.

He had long been used to those harsh insults and abuses.

He ignored them as long as they didn't get close to him.

Xu Si's heart skipped a beat, feeling somewhat frightened. Although Yu Nanqing was lying in bed, the scene of him being bombed a few days ago was still vivid in his mind.

He wanted to speak up to stop her, but then he saw the blue-clad maid pick up another plate of pastries and smash it into the room with a loud "bang," shattering it into pieces.

The voice, accompanied by a piercing laugh, reached Yu Nanqing's ears: "Look, what's so scary about a cripple who can't even crawl? Doesn't he want to eat? That's perfect, since he can't stand up anyway. If he's really hungry, he can just lie on the ground and eat."

"Pfft!" The maid in pink chimed in, "Only that lowly concubine's daughter knows how to serve him. Now even that concubine's daughter has run away. She deserves it."

"Keep your voice down, he's a prince, after all."

"So what if he's a prince? He's still lying in bed like a dead fish. We're acting on the Emperor's orders. No matter how high his status is, is he higher than the Emperor? If it were me, I would have strangled myself with a white silk ribbon long ago, rather than staying here and embarrassing the Emperor."

Although the two maids were cursing fiercely, neither of them dared to step into the main room.

They still remember the scene yesterday when the maids who went in to clean were kicked out.

In the end, they only dared to talk big at the door. If they were really asked to provoke Yu Nanqing, they wouldn't dare even if they were given a hundred lives.

Seeing that Yu Nanqing on the bed remained motionless despite their long conversation, the two felt a surge of inexplicable anger: "What bad luck! I was doing a good job in the palace, and now I've been sent to monitor this half-dead thing."

There was only one dish of snacks left on the tray that Xu Si was carrying. The maid in pink picked it up and was about to throw it into the room when suddenly her wrist was grabbed by someone.

The maid in pink turned around and was slapped hard by Su Wanyan with a "smack!": "How dare you, a mere servant, slander and defame the prince? Who gave you the audacity?"

The plate of pastries fell to the ground and shattered with a thud.

As soon as Su Wanyan's angry shout rang out, Yu Nanqing, who had been lying calmly on the bed, trembled all over. He suddenly opened his eyes, thinking that he had misheard. He propped himself up and turned around, staring intently at the door of the main room.
